Mat’s got his hands on the Dacia Spring!
It’s a cheap and cheerful electric car that isn’t currently on sale in the UK. The question is, even with a £16,000 price tag, should you consider it over other small electric competitors?
When it comes to materials, it’s fair to say the Spring isn’t exactly the most robust car. The doors seem relatively flimsy, and when you step inside don’t expect to find any soft touch, high-quality materials here! Cheap plastic covers the majority of the cabin, and it doesn’t even come with any cup holders! We have the Extreme edition for this review, which comes with fake leather seats, although the quality doesn’t feel all that good.
When it comes to the battery & range, the Spring comes with a 25kWh battery pack. In the entry-level car this is good for a claimed range of 143 miles, while in the Extreme edition, it drops slightly to 137 miles.
Naturally, the performance figures aren’t anything to write home about. The entry-level delivers just 45hp and hits 60mph in 19 seconds, while the Extreme has 65hp and hits 60mph in over 13 seconds.
But of course, it only costs £16,000, while other small EV competitors can cost almost double that! So is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I think Mat is missing the point with this car and any cheap car. This shows why I dont like carwow as much as I used to. Supercars and drag races get booring. And when a review of a cheap car rarely pops up, we are told it it rubbish... Just look at the content from 4 years ago. Thats the kind of content that i liked. Interesting, honest reviews of normal, affordable cars and the odd supercar/ luxury cars.

I think there is a point to be made between moaning about luxury items and just disregard for basic things. You can make cheap stuff but still give a damn. The usb position, no cupholders and rattling doors is not something that would have broken the bank in design. Let's not forget, it also scored a whopping 1/5 in NCAP which makes sense as it sounds like it's made from fish tins. And before I am being accused of stuff, this is my country's car, but it is also the only Dacia I would never consider buying

I mean tbf, a Sandero is a lot nicer for the same price or less. It's not electric, but they really had to take everything nice that the Sandero has out of the Spring to make electric _this_ affordable. They don't "think" that, it's just not a lot of money to be made on cheap cars. There's so many costs you can cut before you end up with a car that's a literal safety hazard and Dacia is getting pretty close to that point. The real problem is that a lot of places have shit public transit. You don't see a lot of cheap cars in Vienna for example, and that's not because everyone there is rich, but because people who can't afford a decent car would rather just use the excellent and affordable public transit.

I applaud Dacia for coming up with the Spring. Thus far, euro manufacturers have concentrated on building heavy, extremely fast and very expensive models aimed at the wealthy/business users. If they want private users to embrace the electric car they need to focus on efficiency and produce products at retail prices your average joe like me is prepared to pay. The Spring may be a bit too cheap and cheerful for some but the principle is spot on. I dont want or need a two and a half ton missile that will do 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

When I lived in 'the city' I owned a 20 year old Fiat Punto. It was cheap, practical, easy to park, simple and didn't matter if someone bumped into it when parallel parking. The Dacia Spring is that car but new and electric. Great for short trips around town and just outside of it and it can't get much cheaper. Adding more stuff to make it sound and feel more premium only adds to the cost, size and energy consumption of the car. If that's what you want then Dacia and Renault have other cars you might be more interested in. This car is cool because it's unpretentious. It's honest and you get what you pay for. The car produces way less noise pollution than any ICE car, and you don't have any local gas emissions, which is a very good aspect. Maybe the success of the Dacia Spring shows that quite a lot of people just aren't bothered about range, performance, 0-60 times, cheap plastics, cupholders and all the other things that dominate the average car review nowadays. They just want something a cheap runabout for their daily commute, going to the supermarket, and other day-to-day driving. As long as you can charge at work or at home, the Spring delivers those things (although I admit that the back-to-basics approach seems to have gone a little too far with this in my opinion).

My brother in law has a top of the line SUV and a 45 HP Spring, he adores driving the spring in town, it moves fast, it's narrow so you can squeez by tight spaces, you ALWAYS have a spot for parking and parking for electric cars is free even in parking lots where you normally pay for an ICE engine. And he bought it with government incentives at nearly 50% off, which was around 11k Euros. For that price there's no better town car on the market in Europe right now.

Although Mat did his usual snobby car review of a cheap car (he only gets really interested if it has a German premium badge on it and is worth around £100,000 or more), I can see why this car will be popular. It is just a VERY cheap to run, city car. It is light for an EV and pretty efficient, and as noted in the video, because it already quite cheap, depreciation is in real terms, very very low (unlike those German overpriced premium cars/EVs Mat loves so much!). With a cheap overnight electricity tariff this will cost about £1.80 to travel 120 miles on your own terms. Not bad.

@@ChiliM4nThere's a reason used cars are cheap. You never really know what you are buying, what was done with the car, with EV especially the battery state is not so simple to check, as usually there are ways to manipulate the data car shows. Additionally, with a used car you don't get (as much) guarantee. And every single element of the car wears down, so you will have to spend more on maintenance and repairs, especially as they are bound to be more expensive for the expensive cars. So overall, it is not that simple. And unlike every single car reviewer, real people often don't care about whether the plastic under the windshield is hard or soft...

I have never had any bad experience with a used car. Where I'm from (Switzerland) you don't just buy any random used car, but you check it thoroughly at what garage the owner bought the car, if he's the first owner, what he is like and most importantly if all the government checks were done and if the regular service has been done at a trusted dealership and if the service book is filled out properly. Those are all big guarantees. You talk about things getting worn down but I honestly prefer a used Toyota/Hyundai over a brand new cheap dacia car which wobbles around on the road and makes weird noises when driving around. I saw one on charge at an IKEA in the UK, which is how I learned of its existence. I’ve been very pleased with my Dacias so I’d certainly consider this for an electric car but, to be honest, I’ve looked online and I’ve been finding first generation Nissan Leafs for as little as £3,000 and apparently, Nissan can fit the batteries of the new Leaf into the old one so you can have the range of the new Leaf in a much cheaper, older model. Not sure about installation prices but could turn out cheaper than a Spring.

We are completely missing the low end for EVs here in North America. This would also sell like hotcakes here if it were under US$25k. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with a lightweight car; cars are too heavy these days.

USA has more regulations than socialist countries 😢😢, that will gatekeep any affordable car from being sold there. Look at the homologation costs.
@qwertyqwerty-zi6dr

THE US government would tax it anyway so it would not be cheap at all. Last year, in Romania the government offered vouchers of 10k € for EV, so we bought the spring with under 8k € lol. Now I believe it s only 7k, still good value even with 10k😂

I'm not in North America so can't claim to know better, but I do seriously doubt this would sell in a country where F150s are flying off dealer lots in the hundreds of thousands. Why would this tinny shitbox sell more than Minis or Fiats when gas is so cheap that nobody gives a shit how much they burn?

Let's say your need is just to drive to the shops in the city, this is perfect. Why do you need to be able to do 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and spend £60,000+, especially when the speed limit is 20 mph. Spend the money you save going on nice holidays and making nice memories.

in Brazil this car is actually called Renault Kwid, and it has A LOT of problems. For example: the steering box just breaks in half in the middle of a road trip or something because the weld used on it is simply too thin to cut costs..
