Doctor Strange is out! So here's another MCU hero that borders on the magical. Ant-Man! We all thought it would be lame, but it ended up being awesome! Select critics were harsh as usual. This is why they're wrong. Here's everything right with Ant-Man.

I like to add a win for the fact that Cassie's step father truly cared about her and bravely stood up to Yellowjacket to protect her. In a lesser movie he would have been a total coward just to make Scott look better

That is a win. He wasn't a bad guy and did care about Cassie. Sure he didn't get along with Scott and probably had a bias against him (for various reasons). But in the end they both cared about that kid and they managed to reconcile. Good job by the movie with that. Didn't have to make him a bad guy just to make Scott look better.

4 years late replying to this, but I wouldn't even say that he hates Scott, just that he's not entirely sure what kind of influence he'll be to Cassie as an ex-con. Paxton doesn't ever target Scott maliciously at all (which he probably would if he hated Scott) and although he's fairly harsh when Scott shows up unannounced to Cassie's party and again when Scott is rearrested, his attitude is still kind of understandable and not vindictive at all. Throughout the film, the guy is literally just doing his job as both a cop and someone who clearly cares about Cassie despite not being her biological father and he has no worries about letting Scott go at the end of the film once he's proved that he's a good guy and can be a good father to Cassie.
@seancochran8251
@seancochran8251 3 роки тому
Overlooked Win: Cassie's Dad & Stepdad. Scott Lang wasn't an absentee dad once he left prison unlike Hank Pym who could have been there for his daughter. Scott tried to re- connect with Cassie, when other ex-cons distance themselves. Paxton was a loving step-dad to kid, regardless of her snark. Not a typical movie step-parent.

I really liked this movie. The fact that Marvel was willing to try this is a big win for them. They tested the waters for lesser known characters while at the same time establishing a new IP into the MCU. I don't think Doctor Strange would have even came out if Ant-Man hadn't done well. Or if it had still been made it may have not gotten the effort that it did.

It's funny. The trailer sold us perfectly on the attitude of the film "You'll be Antman!" "Uh.. are you locked in on that name?" (or something like that). Irreverent-- didn't take itself seriously. And yet STILL kept the name and made it respected. Marvel so far succeeds because they respect the characters. DC has superman killing. The only poor aspect of Marvel is generic music. I've seen some bits where music appropriate to the scenes is used and the scenes are even better. I think Deadpool was soooo good because it had a low budget. They really need to hold the budgets down. Plus marvel films actually translate comic book scenes (like splash pages) effectively to the screen. And DC is just too dark. They need to lighten up.

@macmcleod1188

Jar Jar was originally supposed to be Yoda's counterpart. Unfortunately, Lucas didn't reveal that soon enough and the backlash made him balk. There are many scenes in the first prequel which blatantly show Jar Jar using drunken gods style martial arts and using force powers. And the jedi don't even sense it. As the goofy yoda was a disquise, the goofy Jar Jar was a disquise. It's very likely Jar Jar was as old as or older than Yoda (and survived the "rule of two" being implemented).

I think the smartest thing they did was jump past the Hank Pym ant man and instead make Scott Lang's Ant Man the focus. Aside from the fact that I really liked this elderly mentor character who for once didn't die halfway for the film, having it be Hank Pym doing a origin story would have killed the film. Comic Book Hank Pym is reprehensible, pointless and boring. There is only two things about Hank Pym, that he created Ultron and the domestic abuse against Janet (I don't know the context and I don't want to because it is indefensible). The MCU showed that you didn't need Hank to create Ultron so there is nothing Hank could bring to the Avengers. He would be just another 'Smart' person but without Tony's charm or Bruce's tragedy. Meanwhile Scott brings the powers but also with a fresh perspective. And credit where it is due, this film made me care about Hank Pym. Film Hank Pym I would love to see more of and see him interact with other marvel characters. At the very least I would love to see Hank and Tony in a room together, just to see them duke it out.
@dennisanderson3895
@dennisanderson3895 3 роки тому
Agree about the good of skipping Hank's origin and just letting it eek out. However, it should be remembered that the whole "abusive" thing was an artistic error. The intent was for Hank, at a desk, working feverishly, to throw his hands up in frustration, errantly hitting Janet whom was standing much closer than he knew. The artist drew a dramatic standing backhanded blow ('cause everything had to staged for max drama, right?)...the poor panel ran b/c there wasn't time to have it redone and still be the pages to press. Why Marvel allowed other writers to build on the asshole myth instead of ignoring the error, I don't know, but it bugs me b/c Hank cherished Janet.

Great video! I agree that Ant-Man is a fun film. I really enjoyed it when it came out. However, there's one small plot hole that you missed. It's established that even though something shrinks, it's still the same weight and mass, or something like that. Since that's the case, why was Hank able to hold the tank like he did? Unless it's a toy, it should be impossible for him to carry at all! Keep up the great videos!

this is the most underrated movie in the mcu, it's more unique seeing as it isn't a conventional superhero movie and the villain isn't all about taking over the world and killing everyone. this is a superhero heist film which focuses on redemption and i personally think Darren Cross/Yellowjacket is a great villain. he's not as great as Loki or Killmonger but he is more believable seeing as he's a corrupt businessman who doesn't care about who he hurts, also his death scene where he starts Shrinking uncontrollably until he dies is not only epic but appropriate for a villain who was killed by the power he tried to get his hands on. Ironic deaths are the best kind.

It's definitely reminiscent of Wright, but I don't think he had anything to do with it. People like to credit Wright with things like quick cuts and in this case swipe cuts with lip syncing, but directors have been doing stuff like that forever. Paul Thomas Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, even Alfred Hitchock.

When I saw the trailers (knowing little about Antman) I was exited for the movie, mainly because you could immediatly tell that this was a fundamentaly different origin story to the rest of the MCU. I mean, a genius billonaire + sidekick, a supersoldier from 70 years ago, a scientist/rage monster, a demigod, two professional assasins, an artificial lifeform, a mutant/witch, and a veteran with a pretty unique deployment. And that last one is the most ordinary of them all (which makes the interaction between Falcon & Antman pretty appropriate actually). Introducing Antman as someone from the other end of the social spectrum was a brilliant move in terms of character constellation, and that played out pretty well in Civil War. And similar things could be said about the action; They deliberatly went for the fundamentally different type, literally on the opposite end of the scale. This wasn't a random character being thrown into the mix to bridge the time until Civil War. There was clearly a lot of narrative method behind this in the grand sceem of the MCU. I walked out of the theater thinking "Well, I enjoyed this, it was different. And I can't wait to see how the rest of the team will interact with this rather ordinary guy." Which I'm pretty sure was the intention.
