My kindergartener is going to another kindergartener’s birthday party soon and one of the things her mother mentioned was Barbie. So we were picking out a Barbie and there wasn’t much selection but I pulled interior designer Barbie off the shelf to look to see if her accessories were any good it wasn’t until I was putting her back that I noticed she had a prosthetic leg. And I thought that was neat. It didn’t advertise that she had one leg designed to look prosthetic. She was just, interior design Barbie

Tbh seeing a fat actress play a Barbie was so cathartic to me as a fat person who’s been this way since I was a child. And then I got depressed bc they’ll never make a real physical Barbie at my size bc then they’d be accused of promoting obesity. 😞

It’s genuinely fascinating how some parts of works about oppression and privilege are often lost on people with that specific privilege! Men, with no context as a man: Aw she thinks he’s cute Women, with ALL the context as a woman: Oh she desperately wants to get away from him! Blissful ignorance and all that 😅

Yeah, I remember she gives off that strong vibe nearly the whole time she's with Ken, though in this particular clip that isn't as noticable. I think the actress playing the mom happened to have a pretty smile, and so Lee assumed that smile was a positive sign. Women know that often times you smile to look harmless and unassuming, plus it works like agreeing with them without actually engaging with them, all in hopes that the interaction won't escalated.

Allen was originally created to be Ken's best friend and so could wear his clothes. Which is odd, when you think about it. I actually don't know of any men, offhand, who wear each other's clothes. Women, sure. But not men.

@@njdotson I don't know anything about Barbie prior to this movie's release but I have a cousin who loves playing with Barbie and she always put Ken aside and basically gives him nothing other than just being Barbie's boyfriend

I still remember shopping for my niece for Christmas a few years ago (she loves traditionally feminine stuff and pink, hence being in the Barbie section), and seeing a newer career-based line, something along the lines of "You Can Be Anything!", with Barbies in the usual slew of high-powered, high-paying, influencial jobs....and the lone Ken in the line as a Starbucks-style barista. Gave both me and my mom a good laugh when I texted her a picture.

Interestingly too is that isn't a bad thing. Part of the point of the movie is that it's ok for him to just be Ken, he's kenough just being himself

Yes! This is the point. All of the stuff about the patriarchy was about Ken's story. What you said is Barbie's story. The Barbie ideals was about this exact phenomenon. Empowering women by making unrealistic standards, when women just want to be given the freedom and lack of pressure. Now is feeling pressured only a women trait? No, not at all. Many men feel pressured to not show feelings or having to be the breadwinner. We put pressure on everyone on all the time and the point of this movie isn't that sexism necessarily causes this, but the patriarchy does help support it in some ways. This story is told from women's point of view, so it comes across as only addressing women's issues, when really it does both (though for men it's done more in subtext).

100% to all of that. I love that you noticed the hints about her place in the world before that moment. I doubt it came off as a joke to many women. I think it just struck me (as a guy) how insane it is to be disappointed you don't hold any of the most coveted positions in your world, as if NOT being president is a personal failure. But I also watch all the women around me basically do that to themselves. My wife feeling like a failure because she can't be a fulltime mom for each of our kids (that's 100% x 2, so 200% mom) and have a full-time career, 300%, and also devote all her time to the charitable things she cares about, 400%. And because she can't give 400% of her time at all times to those things, she thinks she's a failure. (Not always obviously, it's just a mindset I've seen a lot more in women.)

I love the movie as well. Honestly I didn’t know what to expect when I first went to go see it, but it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite movies of all time.

I def knew it wasn't going to be a "kids" movie, but I didn't expect how serious it got even in the most light hearted ways. It's such an amazing movie, and it was so nice seeing it theates my mother and I were infront of some older women who were making comments the whole time (like good comments, everyone was) and it made it so much more fun

This became one of my favorite unspoken elements. They joke about how Margot Robbie is too pretty to be saying she isn't pretty, but in reality most people have insecurities (even beautiful celebrity actresses). About their appearance, or their qualifications, or their abilities, etc etc. Everyone is vulnerable to fixating on our negative qualities or features, especially women. Margot Robbie is allowed to feel unpretty -- but Barbie feels unpretty specifically because she isn't PERFECT anymore. The other Barbies don't have the weaknesses that she recognizes in herself, because she's changing, and accepting change can be HARD. She can never go back to being "Stereotypical Barbie pretty" because she's becoming more human, but she also doesn't know how to be anything else yet. I love that Gloria recognizes what she's really feeling and doesn't just tell Barbie she's wrong, because she recognizes that it's all insecurity... which she knows is all too common for women trying to live up to society's expectations.

@@mollypop6887 i would not stand behind the argument "Barbie hates men" but i personally didnt like the ending with no real progress made - just reverted back to normal. For me there was no change in the way of thinking from both the kens and barbies regarding the unnessicity and toxicity of inequality between men and women. To come to the conclusion that there are systemic problems and then NOT acting upon it - even stating, the kens have to go through the same fate as the women in real world and slowly fight for their rights - doesnt get us further than not acknowledging the problem. Such hinderance of progress really annoys me regardless in which aspect of life. I hate it when we as a society are running knowingly into our own demise because of some small discussions about who got it worse and who is mostly at fault. Can we just act upon it after coming to this conclusion? What does it do to fight among ourselfes about guilt and indured agony and further split into "womens side" and "men side"? Nevertheless i enjoyed the film and would recommend it to other men (as a man). I got further insight into the perspective of women in this regard and found the film got a good balance to also include kens perspective rather than just making him a plain villain. But it isnt progressing the discussion further in the right direction to act arccordingly.

​But President Barbie says they need to make room for the Kens. Just because the Kens werent automatically made doctors and put in government and given power doesn't mean things remain the same. Its unfair to keep the Kens out, but it's also unfair to promote them to position of power just because they're kens. Doing that would actually be failing the message of the movie, as the message would come off that while the women worked hard and earned those roles, once they realized they'd discriminated against the Kens instead of fixing the system and giving them a chance to achieve success in whatever they choose to pursue, they would just be handed positions of power solely because they're men and without any skills or training, placing them in any high level positon would be the equivalent to giving a child a toy. "Yeah, sure, Ken you just take your badge and walk around protecting people. Youre doing great, babe! Okay girls, now remember, the Kens have no skills so make sure a Barbie is with them at all times." That wouldn't make for a very good ending. The whole purpose of President Barbie's speech was to make it clear there WOULD be change, but like the real world it might take time. Let's make sure Ken can fly a plane before making him Pilot Ken.

I had not heard of this. I would love to hear what some of the actors thought of their doll's real life. Allen and Midge, obviously, have to have some really.... unqiue owners.

For reference: I'm a 33 year old man. That is relevant. My mom saw this movie before I did. When I finally saw it recently and told her how much I liked it, we started talking about it, and she said she cried during it. "Me, too," I said. "Which scene for you?" I guess subconsciously projecting my own experience, I expected her to say the final scene where Barbie becomes human, or maybe the bus stop scene when Barbie is empathizing with all the people. But instead, she said, "When Gloria gave her speech about how hard it is to be a woman." It kind of hit me hard. Because yeah, I knew that monologue was true intellectually, but it never occurred to me that would resonate with women so much more than general human empathy scenes, to the point where THAT is the only scene she cried at. I almost cried a bit just at her admission of that.

I thought the gynecologist appointment was to point out how now that she was human, she had "a vagina", as a call back to earlier in the film when she informed the construction workers that she did not have a vagina.

I'm so sorry for your loss. As the oldest sibling with a brother who is autistic, bipolar, and OCD, I was raised woth the expectation that I would have to take care of him his whole life. Jokes on them. It turns out i was born with a kidney mutation and know have to go on disability, where as my brother got his degree in Mathematics and is working on finding a job. He's done amazing and I'm so lucky to have him. Even when I thought I'd spend my life taking care of him, I loved him with all my heart, and I could never imagine losing him.

I'm going to disagree with this. Part of the movie's success, imo, is how fast it hits you with everything and keeps moving. It doesn't stop for reflection or expansion, which leaves the viewer reflecting on it afterwards. Comparing it to its partner movie, Oppenheimer spends so much time on the horror of the bomb and McCarthyism that the viewer isn't left with much to think about after the movie.

I dunno if I agree that fathers or mothers "stand still" though? As long as a person is living they are always growing and changing, even if their kids are grown. It isn't until death that they truly stand still.
