In this video I take a first look of the EXPED Mira HL 1 Ultralight Tent. The quality of this tent is superb as expected being from Exped. I think it would be perfect for solo multi day hiking trips and wild camping for 3 season use in the UK. The new clip system makes pitching options really easy. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Hi Paul, again another good review. I think there are some good pros to tent but also equally, as mentioned in the comments, some cons. Like you, I have a X-mid tent but mine is a 2 man and we know how easy and quick it is to to errect in any weather condition, so will be interesting to see how this compares to it. Looking forward you seeing how this tent performs on one of your hikes maybe in some trying conditions. Keep up the good work. 👍

I have a couple of Exped tents. They are great. They can pitch outer first with the footprint/groundsheet but as this is a summer/spring tent not really suited to the English weather. Also Paul I think you’re sleeping in it wrong: Head goes where the two poles are not the single one. Finally the little “tea” bags glow in the dark too so you don’t trip over your guy ropes at night!

I was going to say that. Your head should be where the two pockets are. They would be pretty useless at your feet.🙂

Looks like a good summer lightweight tent. I look forward to seeing in action on a multi day trip to see how it stacks up. I must admit I think I prefer inner pitch first because of the tighter pitch of the inner. I bought the Helm compact 1 recently. It’s the first ‘all in one’ pitching tent that I’ve had, and as much as I like it, the inner is really saggy. Also on multi days, if an ‘all in one pitch’ tent is wet when you pack it away, does all that damp transfer to the inner, ready for the next days (damp) pitch? I agree with the chap who commented that it is very rare that you get caught out with an inner pitch first tent when it is raining. Does seem over priced for a one man summer tent, say, compared to the Alpkit Soloist. The important thing is that we can all benefit from Paul’s videos, as it allows us to make informed decisions about outdoor kit, they point us in the right direction to do further research before we commit our hard earned cash.

I am interested to buy the Exped Outer Space 3 tent to be used as a base camp tent on climbing trips or on camping places when you need covered space for your gear or chairs and table. I even had my motorbike once parked in its vestibule. The Mira1 HL comes even lighter without its tent poles than my Lanshan2 Pro which I find amazing. But 600€ retail price in Germany is still a lot of money for a 3-season tent. The cheapest offer on the interwebs I could find was 431€. Wind resistance capability is an issue with some Exped tents. Like to see you take it through it’s paces

Looks decent for the weight, lots of features! But if tent companies would just make the inner to fit the other side of the entrance (like a diamond shape) then I'd be snapping up more one man tents but for me I need that little bit more room to squeeze my dog/back in with my. I hate having just enough room to put a sleep mat in but that's personal preference. But I do think a lot more people would buy these type of one person tents if they utilised the inner space more instead of just giving us a small zip compartment.

It seems very similar to Decathlon's Forclaz MT900. The MT900 also comes with a built-in vestibule ground sheet. It weighs only 250g more but costs less than half the price. How about a side by side test on a windy hill?
@hulabiker21
@hulabiker21 8 місяців тому
From the pole configuration and inner overall shape it’s also very similar to the Alpkit Soloist, the big difference being the position of the entrance, the AS has a number of reviews complaining about how wet comes into the tent when the entrance is unzipped. Also there is no real porch or ‘sitting space’ with the AS, so the side entry seems to be an improvement. As you say it would be good to get a side-by-side review of this EXPED tent with the other cheaper similar very small and 1.2kg or less tents.

Thanks Paul, great video! Was just wondering if you know what can be done when a tent fly goes “sticky”? I have a Terra Nova tent that I bought about 5 years ago and have only used a handful of times. I dug it out to use at the weekend and the fly was stuck to itself and I had to almost rip it apart. Terra Nova said nothing can be done & they can’t replace it because it is a discontinued pattern. I can’t believe I spent so much money on a tent that is actually expected to degrade, I have only used it 5 times. Any advice much appreciated 🙏
@kevinmcdonough9626

The problem with this is the coating used to make it waterproof. PU coatings were used on lots of tents in the past, but unfortunately they break down over time and, exactly as you've found, give a musty "old tent" smell and go sticky. This is still done on budget tents, but more modern tents now usually use a silicone coating to avoid this. The silicone doesn't break down and the tent will last way longer. (Though be careful, silicone can't be seam taped as the tape doesn't stick to it, so a lot of manufacturers advertise theirs as silicone coated but it's actually silicone on the outside face and PU on the inside face to let the seam tape attach). There isn't really any easy way to repair the PU coating, but I have seen some people strip the PU coating off and then coat it with silicone instead. Few coatings of Fabsil Gold on both sides and some silicone seam seal and it'll probably be more waterproof than when it left the factory. I'm sure if you Google it there will be people who have more detailed instructions.

I'm a long time subscriber and like your channel, I don't mean to be offensive. In first impressions and review videos, for me it is very important to know how reviewer got the tent and wat is his relationship to manufacturer of the tent. Disclaimer "I payed my own money for the tent", "Manufacturer sent me this tent free of charge for a review, but this is my honest review, manufacturer will not review my video before I post it", or "This is a sponsored video, our friends from EXPED sent me this tent for a review". I don't trust review if reviewer does not say how he got the product, or has nothing bad to say about the product.

Hey Paul, thanks for the review, it's an interesting tent. Incidentally, the ties on the fly-sheet are really important, and addresses one of the design flaws of the MSR Hubba and Elixir series... Those MSR tents often fail in high winds because the wind gets under the fly and pushes the inner, then the poles collapse. With the fly being tied to the poles then there is tensile support from the guy-lines all the way through to the inner, making the whole structure more storm-worthy.

A freestanding or semi-freestanding tent can never compete with a trekking pole tent on weight as the trekking pole(s) isn't included in the tent weight. And even with the poles the Xmid wont be freestanding. Don't mean to defend this tent, but the designs are very different. The Exped seem decent, but nothing standout IMO. The Xmid seem like really good tents and pretty good value, but they require more space than a freestanding design to get enough room inside. Pure pyramid design tents can be even lighter, but require even more space to be roomy inside.

Arrive at a windy campsite/wild camp and it’s pouring down, that flimsy kite will get soaked during pitching, so no thanks. £400! 😂 a fantasy price. Surely a Lanshan 1 beats this in every way? I have a Terra Nova Ultra Quasar (albeit 30 yrs old) that was exclusively used for in the uni years for car camping (a crime I know). Whilst it was never pitched in rain, it was certainly taken down v.quickly in rain (Fort William, Lake District, North Wales). A lesson learnt the hard way. My next tent will be outer pitch first for cycle touring, most likely a Luxe Hexpeak V4A.

Funny, I have the lanshan 2 and quasar expedition. I actually do not like my lanshan 2, I loathe camping in it. Its too drafty and flappy. Its the mesh version. I got a Naturehike Vik1 instead. As much as the Quasar is heavy , complete overkill and a balls to pitch, I love it. Its never let me down in the 15 years I have had it. I have had some great trips with that tent in the most miserable conditions. One of the poles only went at the start of this year, the first one. Any excuse and I pack that tent 🏕️ I cant believe the price of the quasar now, almost £1200 for the expedition version. Even the lanshan 2 has gone up about £50 since I bought it. How do you find your lanshan?

@@davejones9919I don’t have one, it was a presumption that it had to be better than the Mira, as it almost fell over when Paul put in the second peg. Having seen a lot of YTers pitch Lanshans (mostly the Pro) they appear to be sturdier - though your experience proves otherwise. Watching Outlawed Landscapes leads me to believe a Hexpeak is stronger than nearly everything. I agree the current Quasar price is crazy. In 1993 it was the best available and through a climbing club discount with Cotswold I picked one up plus the footprint.
