I remember reading that one of the ravens at the Tower of London learned to mimic a Jack Russell. He used to creep up on people, bark loudly, and of course the people would turn round expecting to see a small dog. The raven would then toddle off, chuckling to himself. That image makes me so ridiculously happy!

I've been fascinated with ravens since I was a child and have always dreamed of having one. My grandmother, who spent the majority of her time in the many gardens they had, befriended a raven that would visit her everyday and it started mimicking her unique accent, it's favorite phrase was _"oh fiddlesticks!"_ which my grandmother would say when something fell from her hand or she had an accident while working. When my grandmother passed away the raven seemed to understand and thereafter would come and perch on her favorite bench and coo sadly. Decades later and I still think of that bird regularly.

The bird proceeded to recite the train destinations announcement from Three Bridges and then crapped on my knee. And sometimes I get so curious about what they are "talking" to each other, but will never know. It's also so funny when people don't believe that she's really talking! I have been fascinated with birds my whole life. When I was small child there was a crow at our local zoo. He had a little crayon box that he loved to store pennies in. He also would frequently say "Hello!" I have a lot of Blue Jays where I live and they are so good at mimicking other birds! I hear them making hawks sounds, crow sounds, and even Red-Winged Blackbird sounds! Thanks for sharing Fable with us!! Love her!

If i remember correctly......Blue Jays are part of the Corvid family.....so that makes sense.

@Tentegen Right, blue jays are corvids. Australian magpies, however, are not. There are great subs for bird lovers on Reddit

You can tell Fable loves you by her demeanor, how her head and neck feathers fluff when she tips her head down. Crows behave similarly, I used to have a pet crow. They do like a lot of attention from their owners!

There are a whole bunch of Ravens near our place, and they will often make a strange almost mechanical sounding call. Usually when they are on top of a power pole or high in a tree. It's repetitive and is sometimes answered by another bird. It is always a pleasure to watch you interact with one of your birds. I have a soft spot for Fable, that's for sure, but really they are all magnificent.

Whether it's an African Grey or a Corvid, their capacity to mimic a voice almost down to the last detail is amazing.

So great to see you and Fable again. Crows visit my backyard in North Carolina US. I’ve heard their “purring” call. I have be quiet and move slowly or they clam up and fly away. Clearly the call has specific meanings for them. My wife regularly puts peanuts out where they gather. They also live out fig bush when the figs are getting ripe.

Amazing..I had no idea until recently that Ravens not only can mimic human sounds but better than any bird I've ever heard! Also, that is one sharp looking beak, it made me nervous for her eyeballs..lol

Fable is so beautiful and such a character. Takes me back to my childhood when my friend's family had 3 baby crows they rescued and later released. They were such characters and did talk some. Instead of their usual feed me call they each would yell hi hi hi. They do associate words and sounds with things. Like one of the crows would bark like their Doberman when someone came up the drive then say hi or hello when they got out of the car. Would freak strangers out sometimes. LOL

I've met an African Grey parrot who called all dogs "Coco," as that was his housemate dog. So that implies that the parrot had a dog _category_ in his mind, and a vocalization that referenced that category. The parrot's dog was small, but he would call large dogs "Coco" also. As soon as any dog approached him, he would say "Come here Coco! Good boy! SIT! SIT! Wanna bath ... BAD DOG, BAD" ... and so forth. Confused the hell out of the dogs, er, Cocos. :-) I have no doubt corvids can have words with category referents also.

I just love your Fable. She is incredible. I always wanted a pet Raven. I've had many pet birds over the years and I even rescued a sick Crow once and nursed it back to good health and released it, but I've never had a Raven. Enjoy her. ♥️

I gained a newfound respect for these amazingly intelligent creatures after watching a doc where within a single minute the raven had untied a knot to get a tool it needed to reach into a small space and retrieve a treat. Growing up in Northwestern British Columbia we used to see very large ravens all the time and hear them calling to each other.
