Fleabag is one of those shows that everyone tells you is amazing, but you're never sure a show will ever live up to that amount of praise. Well, Fleabag does, by putting its characters first.

This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It’s so underrated. I loved season 1 and I was expecting season 2 to be just as good but it turned out that season 2 is incredible

The fact that this show got me so invested despite its relatively short run was incredible. There are so many great moments, and seeing every character have their own flaws and struggles is amazing as well. I just wish there were more shows like this.

I could never properly word why I loved this show so much. Your essay certainly helped to give clearer shape to the bundle of raw emotions and chaotic thoughts this show awakens in me each time I re-watch it.

Thank you So Much. In a world full of rather EMPTY Commentary, I often look for some hints of DEPTH about shows. I love good shows and they are hard to find without someone recommending them THOUGHTFULLY. It’s challenging to find good commentary on shows and so far you’re doing great. I wish you well on your journey of finding and recommending worthwhile pieces.

To me, the ending felt like a bitter sweet moment, I was cover in tears but at the same time, with that perfect song in the background and Fleabag last glimpse I knew... she'll be alright.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I JUST NOW noticed the text on the bus stop written on the glass behind fleabag: it says "ЖИВОТЕ" which is in serbian (or another slavic language) and it means "life" (or more like "oh, life!" as like a positive or negative exclamation) ; i found it so cool because you mentioned around 10:08 that priest chose the "life that saved him". Idk if Phoebe did this intentionally or if she somehow knew the serbian meaning but i find it cool because everything in this show seems intentional

It's nice to hear this show, with all this evidence of care taken with its creation by people who allow their product to have a little d*mn dignity as a stand-alone piece of art, exists. Strangely enough, when makers do wish to and are allowed to do that, they can in fact still make money off their hard work and efforts, from people who appreciate the commercialism not being shoved down their throat like feed down the gullet of a goose destined to pieced apart for foie gras. . I've come to loathe the opposite qualities of this series, in shows. Contrivances, deus ex machina, obvious marketing-driven costuming designs and/or moments, forcing characters into ooc behaviour to fit the plot, and allowing consequence-free scene disconnect (or disappearance) for the sake of stuffing in a gag or quirky/sassy remark at the lips of the mouthpiece and forgetting to treat the other characters in the scene as real people who'd really react in consistent ways that are often not amusing or perfectly timed to allow The Reason Why You Suck monologues & etc. . It's weird, but media can often take itself too seriously (and forget to have or allow for any fun) and yet not seriously enough at the same time (betraying their own creations by shark-jumping when they forget that characters aren't just audience stand-ins or money-making mouthpieces, but supposedly also meant to be representative of actual (if fictional) people to be related to and cared about.

Not even kidding, I used to do a kind of "breaking the fourth wall of my own life," thing. I'd just stare knowingly at some audience that wasn't there as if I was on a TV show. Didn't last long, and I don't know why, but it was weird to see it on TV. I related a lot to Fleabags knowing everyone very well, but not herself, to being invisible at dinners, to being petrified of getting older, to losing someone so badly that it almost ends you. To wanting love but never finding it or even kowing what it'd look like, or even knowing if you're capable of it. I guess I've always felt that nothing was really real, like it was all some joke or cosmic prank. Like "this can't be reality, can it? Where's the punchline?" I never felt this sense of being a person, of having an indentity, I'm just some character or whatever I need or should be in any given situation, and then when I'm not being observed I'm just empty. No desires, no drives, no will of my own. I've had my tragedies, my little dramatic scenes, my pain, my dark comedy skits, but never a glimmer of romance, some well lit, warm colorgraded scene of two people at peace with eachother or in love or whatever. No sweeping gestures or kissing in the rain. No unspoken understanding that gives you some quiet courage of the soul. Now I just think the writers of my life are on strike, because I wouldn't perform the scenes anymore. So the stalemate just aborts the production. I've been alone for a very long time now, hiding from the world and from any kind of emotions or people and I'm getting older and ugly and unlovable, and worse at even talking to people or remembering my 'characters name,' and sometimes, I think I'm sleepwalking not to some bittersweet series finale, but a final, silent, just fading to black, unremarkable, unremarked. Alone. And when the credits roll, there won't be any names there.

Actually, the writer (And star) said her process is to come up with the plot and figure out how she can get the character there. Literally plot comes before character in her writing. Sooooooo
