Because of the electoral college, no less than 3 million votes are invalidated just to give power to less populated states. The electoral college is a great idea in a perfect world, but when it exists alongside things like gerrymandering, where district lines are drawn around red or blue household & neighborhood groupings, any attempts to balance power are superficially dismantled ex post facto.
