Hilleberg Unna Mesh Inner - 4 Season to 3 Season Conversion Kit
What it is : Some time back, I posted a video about the Mesh Inner Conversion kit for the Hilleberg Nammatj tent;
The kit converted the shelter from a 4 season tent to a 3 season one and I’ll quickly explain what that means.
Hilleberg is renowned for their 4 season tents; within this category of shelter, their tents are frankly the best of the best in terms of strength and storm worthiness.
While their 4 season tents excel in the winter time in cold conditions, those types of shelters are the opposite of what you want as the temperatures rise.
This is why;
Double wall 4 season tents feature a fabric inner like this and this fabric inner provides some true benefits when camping during the winter months.
It blocks wind drafts, blocks snow from entering the tent body, and it holds in heat.
Think of those properties for a moment;
Blocks wind drafts and holds in heat. This is the exact opposite of what you want in the summer when it is warm;
You want as much air flow as possible and you want warmth to be released instead of being trapped.
That’s where is product comes into play -
The last time that you all saw the Unna on my channel was back in the winter when I was using the tent in a winter storm. It performed incredibly well in the storm that started as a freezing rain event, then transitioned to a wind driven snow storm.
The tent performed just as a 4th season tent should but now that summer is here, it is simply too warm to use this tent comfortably.
Until now!
This is the Hilleberg Mesh Inner for the Unna and it replaces the fabric inner so that this shelter can be used in the warmer months.
If you saw the Nammatj Conversion kit video, this isn’t going to be all that different other than we are focusing on the kit with a different tent.
I find this sort of gear interesting and I wanted to share this content with those that do as well.
How important is this kit? That is a great question -
Without it, I would never use this tent in the warmer months….it’s absolutely miserable to do so.
It’s like this, you go camping with this tent or similar, you set it up and let's say that it’s 80F outside. Inside of the tent, it can easily be 20 - 30 degrees warmer and again, that’s because the fabric is hold in in heat and it’s limiting air flow.
Agenda Free Link : hilleberg.com/eng/shelters/me...
Price : $230
Weight: 1lb 9oz
Can be set up on its own when using the tent poles - requires 6 stakes to do so.
……..
Speak of how the fabric inner is removed and the mesh inner is installed
Compare weight of fabric inner and mesh - does the mesh weigh less?
Quality ?
Installation Difficulty?
Noticeable differences
Thoughts -
Worth the money - For those who plan to use their strong Hilleberg tent in the warmer months, this mesh inner is a no brainer as the benefits are massive.
A Hilleberg tent with a fabric inner in the summer is basically unusable in warmer conditions whereas with the mesh inner, it becomes a supremely strong tent that can be used in the 3rd season.
…..
Tent Availability : Akto, Anjan 2, 3, Allak, Enan, Helags 2, 3, Kaitum 2, 3, Soulo, Soulo BL, Staika, Nallo or Nallo GT 2, 3, or 4, Nammatj, Nammatj GT 2, 3, Rogen, and Unna tent.
Product Availability : unfortunately due to the shortages and limitations which many industries are facing today, the mesh inners for most Hilleberg tents are exceptionally hard to locate.
How did I find this one : I called outdoor retailers all across the country and asked them to take note of my name and number and what I was looking for.
It took 6 months but finally I found one and here it is.

Hey Luke, I love my Unna!!! I started with the Nallo 2, just a little to big for me allone. Then I looked to another tent, little bit smaler. I was looking for MSR, Helsport, EXPED …, and at the end, Hilleberg again, the Akto. After two trips, I thought, ok a little bit more space in the inner would be perfect 🤷🏻‍♂️. Looking around at the brands, hmmm Hilleberg again, the Unna. For me the Perfect tent in fall and Winter time in the bavarian forest, mountains etc. I used know for 5 years, no issues, no problems, no damages. That’s the reason why I use and love my Hilleberg. Greetings from Würzburg, Bavaria/Germany

Luke👍👍Hilleberg tents reign supreme for principal, design, materials and workmanship, of course they charge a premium for this level of quality few manufacturers can equal. Can't complain about the cost as you know it up front and it won't do you any good anyway if you're looking for the pinnacle in a tent. I'd say happily pay for the mesh inner regardless of tent model and enjoy the season your experiencing. Enjoy!

Congratulations on getting the summer kit for the tent!! Hilleberg is tops in design, quality, strength, and durability. Weight is always worth it with a Hilleberg. I agree that the price is quite steep but I believe it to be worth every cent in the field, where it counts. I'm not criticizing you for wanting to save money where possible, that's a good virtue, but I am very willing to pay the premium for a Hilleberg six days a week and twice on Sunday.

I own a Red Keron 4GT, and the "getting roasted in the summer" is real. Even with the mesh doors open front and rear, the entrance mesh door open, and the air vents aimed at the wind, it can get uncomfortably hot. I suspected this would happen, but I wanted to give it a shot, and 2 weekends ago I learned my sweaty, uncomfortable lesson. I experienced a similar heat build up in the early spring of 2022 when I got my Keron 4GT. Temperatures got down to 26 during the night, I was for the most part warm and happy in my Nemo Disco 15 with a Nemo Alpine sleeping pad. Come the sunrise the light hitting the exterior warmed the tent significantly, the inner tent was at least 20 degrees hotter than the outside air (approximately 40ish degrees if I recall). The heat that material can trap is next level. Great when you want to wake up in Mid-Atlantic, Appalachian cold to a warm enclosure. It can be pure misery when you're trying to stay cool when a large tent is needed for gear storage.
@neonsamurai1348
@neonsamurai1348 Рік тому
I have wished they would design the nammatj and the keron so you can roll back the vestibules like you can with the nallo and kaitum. So at least you could get some more airflow. It is unfortunate that the Keron GT and Kaitum GT don't have mesh options either. Also ironically the Red color should be the least heat absorbing of the colors hilleberg offers. Could always set up a tarp above to reduce heat absorption, but them you have more weight to pack.
@subliminus
@subliminus Рік тому
@@neonsamurai1348 yeah, I was kinda shocked there wasn't more options for airflow at the back outside unzipping and rolling up the rear door and securing it. It leaves the vestibule open, which could cause issue if it rained. A full mesh liner would be awesome, but I am happy with the purchase. It is large enough for myself, my equipment and another person and their gear if needed. A good Basecamp tent for sure, but I won't be packing that 12+ lbs beast anywhere far from the truck.

For a few extra pounds you can have the Staika which has two doors that have mesh that opens up for more ventilation plus two vestibules. The Staika is the all round choice in my opinion. It’s their best tent.
@DemiGod..
@DemiGod.. 3 місяці тому
The Allak would be better as lighter. The Unna is fine for his winter camping, who wants to lug around 10lbs , particularly in summer? . Best tent is debatable, I got and preferred the Tarra rather than a staika which is more spacious being a geodesic tunnel, but now prefer the Soulo for winter as the Tarra, like the Staika is too heavy to lug around unless you gonna use it for a basecamp tent. For summer have an anjan 2 as even the Soulo is too much to lug around when you dont need a storm tent.

I think the main issue is buying something that expensive (the inner, I already own the full tent), is taking into considering the weight and the narrow range of temperatures that would make the inner necessary. I would not take my full Unna on a summer bikepacking trip. However, I just did a trip in late August and needed to camp at 9,200 feet here in Colorado. The temp dropped to 28 degrees which was on the limit of my Big Agnus 1 person tent (less that 3 pounds, very thin outer shell , mostly mesh inner). I needed to wear all the clothes I carried; down jacket, wool hat, etc., to keep kind of warm. But it worked. So is it worth the extra money and weight penalty for a limited use application? Don't know... It would be interesting to know how the Unna outer tent and the mesh inner would perform in just-below freezing conditions, say 25 to 32 degrees. Likewise, it would be interesting to know how that combo works in say, 50-70 degree nights (most summer nights in the US at lower elevations). I'm going to Peru and Bolivia for a month long bikepacking trip in October where the average elevation will be 14,000 feet and I'll bring the full Unna tent for sure.

I have 2 tents (one camo, one tan), a footprint, an extra set of poles, a cold weather kit, and a camo net to go over the footprint/extra poles as a hide. I have less than $400 into all of it and most was bought Brand New. I made a pair of Tyvek footprints for the tents themselves to use since that is lighter, smaller, and cheaper than the official footprint from Litefighter.

Nice job finding a mesh inner for that tent Luke. I'd like to try that setup here in Florida, but the fact that I can get 6 naturehike monger 2 tents for the price of that setup makes me wonder if it is worth the expense. The improvement in airflow would have to be substantial to justify it, but I'm a fan of Hilleberg and their support is fantastic. Just not sure if their tents make sense here. 👍

i bought nallo 2 and sleep in it couple nights and i like it. Its getting cooler in finland already so the fabric inner will do just nicely. I bought a Hilleberg Acto back in 2004, and it is a total sweat lodge in warm weather. I switched to hammocking years ago for most of the year, unless the temperatures are below zero, Fahrenheit. The Akto holds in heat, but also every molecule of moisture from breathing and perspiration. It frosts up heavily, and is so small that I can't help knocking the frost back down on myself. The fly itself doesn't have enough ventilation options. I doubt that the mesh would help at all in warm conditions in rain, where it must be buttoned up. There is no flow-through ventilation unless you leave the end vents open, and then you can get splash back if the rain is heavy and the wind is strong. It is very good at shedding wind, for a single pole tent, and has a big vestibule, is bombproof for its weight, but way expensive. I concur that, in the Northeastern United States, one would do well to look at other designs for anything other than winter, short-term hikes. It's tough to get the frost and moisture out.

Oohhh you got one!! 🤩 Sweet!! So, what is the total weight loss of the tent? I love my Unna in all seasons, except warm sunny summer days. I always try to find a spot to set it up in the shade from the morning sun. Or else I risk waking up at 06:30 soaking in sweat! 😂 summer nights up here in Swedens north mountains are cool or cold , could be down to freezing so there is no problem sleeping. It would be nice to be able to get away from wind and bugs during the day though, or to sleep a couple hours longer in the morning. I will weigh my inner tent and do the math to see the benefit of weight loss. Then I will decide if I will try to get one as well. Great review Luke ! Many thanks.

I usually am at higher elevations now in Colorado, so I don’t use the mesh inner anymore but it’s nice to have. I’m curious if you get any airflow with the mesh inner and the outer closed up? I might like to switch to this as my all rounder. Smart design. I’ve owned a lot of hilleberg tents and the Niak so far has been the best experience. So fast to put up and take down and side entry is very easy to get in and out of. I don’t like the 2 zipper setup on the Unnas inner door but other than that it’s a great design. With a mesh inner it could potentially be in there most of the year. It would be nice if Hilleberg offered your choice of inner as an option when purchasing. Anyway thanks for this video.

Great job as always Luke, no I don't think it is worth that much money for the mesh inner , you can buy a hole new 3 season tent for that or one even cheaper

I've never understood why they call these "4 season" tents when they're mostly only good for winter camping.

I find The Only people who complain about the price of a Hilleberg or its accessories are People who don't actually need that level of tent

Given the price point for this tent could/would it make more sense to buy a Litefighter tent and get the 4th season mod? Granted it is a single person tent and typically more military looking visually, but you get a typical 3 season with a 4th season direct addon, versus a 4 season with a whole different tent solution to make is a 3 season. Just thinking out loud. It’s a great deal easier to find both the tent and the addon with the Litefighter as well

How do you fit the inner without the fly please as the poles go through the fly?

I would rather just have one good winter tent for short hikes or canoe or sled trips and 1 to 3 summer options. I only sleep in the tent at night I dont' have tea parties inside. But if I was having tea parties inside its a nice option.

I'd love to be able to afford a Hilleberg, and if I could, I'd just have the 1 tent, with the 2 separate inners. After spending all that money, I don't think I'd have any kept for a bunch of different tents. I'd have to sell the 2 I have now, and that might make a small dent in the price for the Hilleberg. 🤪🤣 They're great tents, and I enjoy winter camping so I'd put it to use. If I win a lottery or something.
