We're talking about the best CPUs of 2023 to recap the year. Between new prices and benchmarks, we can now look at AMD vs. Intel offerings for the best gaming CPUs, best CPUs for Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, programming & compile, and efficiency, and more. This round-up is made to try and help PC builders who've been out of the game for a little while quickly get back up to speed, with comparisons between key CPUs like the AM5 Ryzen 7000 & Intel 14th "Gen" parts. Some of the top CPUs for the year include the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD R7 5800X3D, Intel i3-12100F, Threadripper 7980X, and more that we'll talk about.

@@heyolorenns Checkout pcpartpicker or pcbuilder, but the TL;DR is if you want a decent gaming setup, go for an "AM5 motherboard" and then get AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D if you have the budget, and maybe either a used NVIDIA 3080, or 3070 Ti, or AMD's 6900 XT, or 6800, or if you have the budget and want a very power-efficient card but for an RTX 3080 performance, go for NVIDIA's 4070 or even better, 4070 Ti.

It's pretty cool how you include when you performed the benchmarks in the graphs. I appreciate that level of disclosure. We don't quite get that in all places, and we're often left guessing if, for example, an 13900k benchmark result was from a year ago when being compared to, say, a 14900k result, which obviously was tested more recently. We know driver optimizations, particularly in the case of AMD, have led to performance improvements over time.

this! running my 7950X in 105W Eco mode. Reaching around 35k to 37k points on Cinebench R23. hwinfo tells me 130W.. so 10% less points but less than half the electrical power than the 13/14900k. Sure, I could go to maybe 200W and beat the 40k points a 13/14900k has, but I find the lower temps perfect. Might get a higher lifetime aswell with that... the reason they didn't do that by default is, because for customers only the raw power matters, so they needed to get ahead of the 13900k, cranking up the power

AM5 is only scheduled to last until 2026, so you won't have the same longevity in socket as AM4 had. Honestly, I'm not disappointed with this, as AM5 was too premature needing lowly RAM speed, and over delivering in PCIe gen 5, with storage unreliable due to overheating failure. Also the Z height IHS is an abomination of design. I would have preferred to buy a new cooler adapter or cooler entirely than have a 95 degree boosting chip, using 20w of extra power.
@radar4104
@radar4104 5 місяців тому
@@DeadSpy2 That'd be nice, though I doubt AM5 will have the same longevity, think AM4 was a one off thing now that they've got quite a bit of market share back lol, I believe we've only got Zen 5 confirmed for it, which makes sense with the expectation of support through 2025. But yea, as long as it's stable and well performing, I'm happy. It's served me quite well in the short 3 days I've been running it, and I haven't experienced issues like long boot times that early AM5 adopters reported. Lisa Su: Yo Intel? Our boy Microcenter wants to try kicking you in the gonads too! Intel: ....yes Mistress Su.... I'll be right there... AMD's strategy of making desktop chips out of "rejected" CCDs that aren't good enough for Epyc and Threadripper means AMD can't just stop making desktop chips. They will always be a side product of Epyc production. Which means AMD will simply flush the price out the toilet if they have to, as they're making severely big bucks in the datacenter, and have no desire to just throw the "rejects" away. So they will be sold at whatever price they can get for them. Intel can stop production of desktop chips if the market is saturated. AMD can't.

The 9900k was Intel's last truly amazing CPU. For me it was up between that and the Ryzen 2700X, but between being "a habitual AMD customer" and needing strong software compilation performance (my Phenom II X6 1100T was a work horse for that!) I went with the 2700X which was a godsend choice as I ended upgrading to the 5950X.... But then the aunty looking little brainiac known as Dr Su rocked the world with the 5800X3D and my jaw dropped along with everyone else's. I've become accustomed to just sacrificing a bit of gaming performance for getting the best work-horse performance I can, but the 5950X was already king of the hill, so I hoped desperately for a 5950X3D.... And that's how AMD "hooked me" into upgrading a lot sooner than I normally would. The 7950X3D was just too bloody tempting and I caved :P

*Can this PLEASE be the last video this year talking about CPUs?* I want to see more case reviews--A LOT of new & interesting ones have come out this year, and even some ones from last year haven't been reviewed yet! The same can also be said about PSUs and CPU coolers. I'm particularly interested in reviews of the Fractal Focus 2, Fractal Torrent Nano, Fractal Ridge, Phanteks P200A, Phanteks G300A, Phanteks NV5, Phanteks NV7, be quiet! Shadow Base 800DX, be quiet! Dark Base 701, be quiet! Dark Base Pro 901, Thermaltake Ceres 300, Thermaltake Ceres 500, Thermaltake CTE T500, Thermaltake CTE C700, Thermaltake CTE C750, and Thermaltake The Tower 200.

I went from a 9600k to R7 7800x3d and it as been a very worthwhile upgrade. Not a fanboy of either. I like both intel & amd but the price to performance I got for the 7800x3d was too good to pass on (used for gaming only).

Loving keeping the Upgrade category, I'd be cool with even more niche categories! Maybe best APU with best performance and graphics efficiency? And like you guys, I'm happy they might be foraying into keeping and stretching out the capacity of older architectures. The truth is, a lot of us just can't afford to keep up the rat race and totally do a new machine every two years. Its a whole different mindset when you're looking at keeping a PC for 5 years. Before I got this "new" one in 2020s, my last one ended up being my machine for about a decade.

AMD is really killing it in the CPU game. It has been great seeing the increased arms race for CPUs and it was a really hard choice when I did my upgrade earlier this year. Went 13700k personally as Autodesk Revit seem to favor Intel right now. If my job wasn't Revit based however I imagine I would be sitting here with a 7900x.

if your buying a new system it is, RAM price can only go up, in fact i seen better deals on DDR5, yes i agree the AM4 platform had better board options for all people where AM5 is copy and paste no matter who you go to, but that been said i am very happy on AM5.

@@blackIce504 Absolutely not. For people who buy a complete machine every 5-6 years and don't upgrade anything in the interim, AM4 is still a strong contender in the value segment. People who just want "good enough" CPU performance, while transferring as much budget as possible towards the GPU, AM4 is a solid option. You can get a decent board, 32GB of RAM, a 5800X3D, 2TB storage, PSU and a 7800XT for $1200. Do the same on AM5 and you'll have to step that GPU down a tier or cough up another $100-ish.
@blackIce504

with ram prices going up, storage prices going up for SATA, as NVME gets cheaper yeah I went with AM5 for those reasons and i upgrade on similar cycles. Thus if your doing a full system its better to go to a platform that's going to be around and have upgrade paths open and that has cheap parts. Ram requirements change fast it was only a few years ago people could get away with 16gb now its very hard to manage. "i normally use 32 to 64gb on my workstations" but yeah when i first jumped on the AM5 platform a cost saving was just getting a basic sticks of ram to get me through and it was hell going back to 16gb its tough to manage on 32gb. Also have you factored in the power requirements of newer platform as well? Productivity / power efficiency..... Allot of people are guilty of not taking this into account. But if ignored that when i was buying 3 screens and went with a cheaper monitor that used more power the savings i got by going a more expensive monitor paid for it self in less than a year, it all adds up. I use the same strategy deploying servers as well. @@andersjjensen

I'm curious if you are going to pair that office TR 7970X for the office with an Intel ARC card for its codec acceleration. It'd be a bit of a Frankenstein monster splitting up the component vendors like that but stepping back you'd have excellent CPU performance for that side of the job and AV1 acceleration for quick high quality rendering. There is enough IO there that adding a second GPU (or even a third) is an option if things like CUDA acceleration for something is needed.

It's funny watching all this. I have always bought AMD for decades because of it's bang for the buck CPUs, but AMD has always been the underdog, and seeing them top performing in pretty much all specs and Intel has the mid preforming CPUs is very surreal and heartwarming at the same time.

AM5 Non-X should be in your charts if not winning a couple awards. For efficiency, the 7900 does more than a 5950X, the former king, but it uses 25% less power. For budget, you can use the included wraith prism instead of spending another $30-100. Surprised to not see it mentioned or at least present in the charts for comparison. Not as much of a "gaming" cpu as the x3d chips, but much better value if you plan on doing any actual work. Plan on doing the drop-in upgrade in a few years to whatever Ryzen 8k or 9k has to offer. No-brainer CPU of the year in my opinion, all the benefit of AM5 without the ridiculous TDP / heat.

I think his reviews usually rock but I never hear this pro AMD guy talk about idle power consumption while there's a huge difference between AMD and Intel cpu's when you look at year numbers. The idle state is where your pc is in most of the time. You don't buy a 40 halogen watt lamp while you could buy a 4 watt led that does the same. It's one of the reasons (next to faster render times) why i've bought a 14700k that i undervolt while still rendering a lot faster compared to the AMD's. Power consumption is a very important and growing topic because energy pricing in Europe is a growing problem. I don't know if he only wants to do reviews for Americans ofc, in that case, forget everything I've said. I just think AMD does not like him mentioning this topic so he won't. I could be wrong, just my wild guess.
