The birdshot was surprisingly effective. Not even close to what I had expected to be honest. Even at the longer range you first shot at, they might not be dead - but they would be in a _world_ of pain and more than likely blind too. So still taken out of the fight. Not to mention considering how much any head wound bleeds - even relatively small ones - they'd be bleeding pretty badly from all those holes. That was really eye-opening.

Im a crime scene cleaner and over the years I’ve cleaned up countless shotgun suicides. The most gruesome one, the guy used 12g 3 1/2 #3 steel Goose shot and put it under his chin. The splatter in that room was truly insane. Anything home defense related it doesn’t really matter what round you use, the bad guy will be very dead or about dead regardless.

The birdshot round probably caused all that damage because of the wadding. The prefrontal cortex, and pituitary gland and thalamus and hypothalamus are all located superior to the eye orbit so even with birdshot penetrating the eye, the brain won't necessarily be hit. Penetrating the anterior brain with birdshot does not necessarily equal a kill anyway. Your victim may wind up with deficits in executive function, or metabolic issues if the pituitary or hypothalamus is damaged.

Thanks for the birdshot testing. I am a firm believer in #2 or #4 birdshot in a modified choke 12 gauge for home defense. Granted its no more than 5 to 7 yards. That's a very controlled penitration with little or no over penitration. I don't want a slug or buckshot going through and tearing up my home and possibly going next door and injuring my neighbors.

Good to remember that there are a lot shot sizes between 7.5 birshot and 00 Buckshot. #4 bucksot or maybe BB would probably give the best of both worlds for home defense. Lots of pellets, good penetration, dead bad guy.

At normal home room distance most any load of bird shot if aimed well at the face/head will poke out the eyeballs, put several holes in the trachea(wind pipe) and sever the Carotid Arteries on the sides of the neck causing immediate and profound blood loss to the head resulting in the loss of consciousness in under 10-12 seconds. Therefore, Bird shot can be used to effect the stopping of home invaders when aimed at the face/head area. Good demo.

I know this is an older video but I’ve been looking into the best way to set up the benelli m4 for home defense and actually ran across a lot of interesting things along the way, things that would actually increase the effectiveness of it and reduce the gap between it and something like a AR and that would be to keep a rifled choke tube in it, when shooting buckshot you’d think the spin induced from the rifled choke tube would make the spread hellacious but in all honesty it was only slightly larger than a standard cyl choke, roughly 3” larger overall at 50yds. Now slugs on the other hand from a cylinder bore are about 3” in group size at 50yds on average but with the rifled choke tube it shrunk down the group size to 3/4 of an inch at 50yds and would definitely increase the accuracy of them to even greater distances thus improving its range. Test it for yourself and see!
