Si & Ollie are back for another edition of retro vs modern, this time riding the Giant MCR, a road bike so forward-thinking it was banned by the UCI. With a carbon monocoque frame design, it was the original mass-produced aero road bike back in 1997. We pitted it against a modern Pinarello F to find out just how fast this retro aero machine is compared to today’s engineering!

Whichever is the more efficient! I actually support the UCI policy on accessibility of bikes, but if this particular box-frame design can be mass produced cost-effectively (as Giant seem to have demonstrated) I dont see why it should be banned. 🤔It’s still recognisably a bicycle, with two wheels, pedals, handlebar and a seat. What’s the problem? Why such loyalty to the double triangle frame shape….itself a radical innovation in its day?🤷‍♂️

For me it would be the Giant MCR. I could walk into a store one day and purchase a Pinarello F and I know I wouldn't regret it. I could ride the MCR and have a blast with it; but there's no way I could ever find one to purchase.

As for the camera work, while British GCN will occasionally zoom in during a shot for effect (in post), in GCN Español the zooming on outdoor shots is much more frequent and awkward. It seems to me like the shots are not well prepared in advance and the camera person is tweaking the composition on the go. The Giant bike looks absolutely wicked with the deep section tires. Clearly, the design needs some updating, but why not? If the bike can be made to come in sub 8 kg with significant aero benefits, it could be a winner. I would certainly consider it. "Faster than UCI legal" That's the pitch. Also, if it is cheaper to manufacture and could save, say, $500 compared to a comparable bike, that too would be a selling proposition. So, no need to be shy. Do an update and see if you can make a better bike.

I don't think parts slow down over time, unless they've not been maintained or are worn out. I have a pristine MCR 2 in original configuration in my collection with 15,000 kms on the computer. It was fast on the flat but didn't like the hills because of its weight. I had it set up for a while in a TT configuration for tri events with full aero bars and rear disc wheels and it was seriously fast. I heard that Giant were doing an FEA weight reduction program when it was banned. I sometimes take it out at Tour Down Under time, park it against a wall and watch the crowd gather around. Love it. People forget that MCR stood for Monocoque Compact Racing and when it came out and the original aluminium TCR stood for Tubular Compact Racing, and not Total Compact Racing as is now supposed.

With those "cartwheels" in there it was making my eyes bleed, but with those Visions in and maybe tone the very 90's graphics down a bit I could live with it looks wise. And I suppose unlike many of the the other bikes you guys tested that had a lot of unique geometry that required one-off unobtainable parts, quite a lot of the things Si mentioned could be easily swapped out for modern, light, stiffer, more aerodynamic components, which BTW would make a far more fun and interesting video than sticking the frame in a wind tunnel.
@StuartMossTV
@StuartMossTV Рік тому
The time difference was only 2%. I’m pretty sure if we did change the remaining components to match the Pinarello the times would be significantly different. I would also love to go in a wind tunnel with it though 😃

After I had done the structural design of the Specialized 3 spoke wheeel in 1990, working for DuPont, I was asked to work with Don Don Grishard and Professor Chester Kyles again on a similar ultra bike without a top tube, like the Giant one shown. On my FEA model, the "torque" tube was so thin, it buckeled under hard riding loads, requiring and internal light bulkhead. Don made a heavy full size version for wind tunnel teasting. The project ended when the UCI required a functional top tube, likely the same time the Giant was banned.

What happend to Ollie's pants? Did a bird shat on them or did he get a bit to exited about that Giant? A guy in my local bike club had a Giant just like this one, but there was an aerodynamic "fearing" over the seatpost/frame junction in carbon. That bike looked so cool. There was also a guy who had the Trek version. Also a late 90's bike. A lot of cool bikes came out of the nineties. Also a lot of cool mtb's, but that's a whole different story/channel :) Edit: I wrote this post before the end of the film, but the question remains, bird-shit or happy juice? I'm not buying the wax thing. :)

Excellent idea for monocoque designs, especially if built today with the internal drive train idea and maybe even an internal disc or hub brake. Practical and reliable. Could mould from reinforced pre-preg composite (carbon, for the rich) or structural mouldable composite as Stuart suggested.(for this with a real budget).

The frame design of this bikes reminds me the design of the frame of high performance motorcycles such as MotoGP: the twin spars frame. Simplifying at the maximum, the idea is that if you connect the swing arm axles and the steering with the shorter distance as possible you also minimize the bending moment on the frame so, for a given stiffness you can reduce the weight of the frame.

Oscar Egg's use of a tail fairing in 1913, and his later Velo-Velocar in the '30s was the source of the UCI's ban on any fairings or unorthodox bicycle designs. Graeme Obree's unfaired, slightly more conventional bike made from old washing machine piping was also too fast for the UCI so it had to be banned.

Watched the coasting downhill test of positions, including the belly on seat and feet straight out behind. It got me thinking while coasting. What if you could overlap your knees more when coasting with level pedals and feet in the pedals. The top tube gets in the way, can it be modified? Oh this shows it gone. Be sure and test coasting with knees overlapping more than a bike with a top tube allows. The Lotus and softride don't allow knees to overlap much.

I doubt it would be faster, but it would be interesting for you to take a look at one of the Softride Wing bikes. People who love them swear they are way more comfortable than a normal bike, and just as fast. Actually, an interesting series or maybe just a single video would be looking at designs that the UCI outlawed and/or mainstream bikes that contravene the UCI rules (like that Cadex Tri bike, but you'll have to hold your noses and get a GTN presenter to ride that one)
