Admire of Tyson had to watch that match between Tyson and Holmes in detail through again, and understand why Holmes did not manage the last 10 seconds of the 4th round. He was surprised by an infight uppercup. But the great giants of the Ali era rise again. Holmes was cunning enough to protect himself, but when he had to hit the last crucial defensive shot with the right in the ring corner, his arm is on the wrong side of the middle ring rope and his defense is totally open and Tyson knocks him out. Also note that Holmes had not boxed at all before, had in principle put the gloves on the shelf, yet he can keep Tyson at a distance. It's not given Tyson had won that match, just look at the Buster Douglas match, Douglas as there was no resistance for Holyfield, who later beat Tyson twice.

@bubbydionysus20738 місяців тому
After Holyfield got cut by Holmes's elbow, Holmes practically stopped fighting. Strange. This reminded me of the first Holyfield - Lewis fight. When I realized that one of them was sponsored by Showtime and the other was under HBO (or something of the sort), I told my friend, who was watching the fight on TV with me, that it was going to be a draw. After the first few rounds, it was very obvious that both were pulling their punches. I was so disappointed, And true enough, it was a draw.
@peterhaye85378 місяців тому
There's no credence in what you say, the first fight between Lewis & Holyfield is widely acknowledged as one of the worst decisions in the history of the sport & most observers were of the opinion Lewis had done enough to win. Holyfield was hurt on numerous occasions but Lewis failed to press forward, as was a cautious counterpuncher & had nothing to do with either guy pulling their punches, you are obviously a conspiracy theorist.
@bubbydionysus20738 місяців тому
@@peterhaye8537 You obviously don't know anything about boxing. You must be a fan of Don King. I rely on my own observations, not on others. If it were just left to judges and observers, so many fighters would have lost by decision had they not eventually KO'd their opponents. When Ali fought Ron Lyle, the announcer kept on saying the Lyle was ahead on points. He then told Angelo Dundee that his guy seemed to be losing. Angelo said something like, "Oh yeah. Then I must be blind." Shortly thereafter, Ali KO'd Lyle. In the Ali-Foreman fight, the judges must have Foreman way ahead on points just before he was knocked out. The judges, announcers and observers were all set to give the fight to Moorer had Foreman not KO'd him. The announcers kept on repeating that Foreman's punches did not seem to carry as much power as before. In the Thrilla in Manila, if Frazier's corner did not give up and instead continued to fight, and just told Frazier to just keep away from Ali and finish the round, just as what the handlers of Holyfield told him to just keep away from Holmes in the last five or six rounds, then the judges most probably gave the fight to Frazier.

In this fight Holyfield had an opponent who gave him time and space to go ahead and use his maximum viciousness for any length of time he wanted. And when Holyfield had run and crossed that boundary again and again he found that all of that did not outclass or overturn his opponent ; on the contrary Holmes was at ease and in control and was taking right decisions with presence of mind and hitting Holyfield intentionally, and regularly and very effectively. All in all , it was a draw at the best. It could not be said that Holyfield was the better fighter than Holmes in the fight.

I am glad they included big George Foreman whether it was his younger form, or his older form, but I would love to play as Larry Holmes fighting against George Foreman. That would be a dream of mine, lol. Holmes deserves more respect. I know people do know him as one of the greatest fighters in history, but he was more than that. He was basically Ali 2.0. I would love to see something like this happen again with older fighters. I would love to see Vitali, and Wladimir Klitschko to come back and school the modern generation of heavyweights, and finally have a rematch with Tyson Fury whether they would win or lose. Wladimir had a whole different style when he fought Joshua a while back. He was dancing, and throwing more diverse combinations than he did during his reign as champion.

This fight just underscores the greatness of Larry Holmes. He scored over 50% of his punches on Holyfield and made Ray Mercer a punching bag by scoring over 70% of all his punches. Holyfield and Mercer scored less than 45% on Holmes. The only two fighters that made Holmes look bad are Mike Tyson and Michael Spinks in their 1st fight. It just shows you how great Prime Mike Tyson was.
@isabellamcloughlan6082Рік тому
Not true, Carl Williams arguably beat Holmes but didn't get the decision & Witherspoon pushed him very close as well, Spinks beat him & Tyson flattened him. Holmes was a very good fighter no doubt but did not face the calibre of opposition that Muhammad Ali faced, such as a Liston, Frazier & Foreman. All of those guys were leagues above Shavers who incidentally almost knocked Holmes out. As for Holyfield & Mercer, Holmes was soundly beaten by Holyfield & Mercer clearly underestimated Holmes, coming into the fight thinking it was an easy job.

Evander Holyfield was much more busy, no questions about that but when watching the entire fight closer, the results must be said was closer on points than the official scorecards. Larry Holmes at 42 really left an solid impression in this fight. His boxing knowledge and defensive science of the ring proved to be still at a champion level. The way Holmes was blocking the punches (especially until the middle rounds of the fight), the inner calm he showed and the comfortable working pace he could place against a warrior spirit champion 15 years his junior. But last but not least the way Holmes's own punches seemed to be a little more accurate than Holyfield at times and that his jab still provided that crisp he is legendary for still at age 42. I think it's one of the fights that Larry Holmes could be very proud of his own ring performance - even if he was on the losing end of the fight. Out of Holmes's career 6 losses, only 1 could be said was not in a very competitive and challenging performance that rivaled the out-come result. And that was his TKO 4 loss against prime Mike Tyson in 1988, a fight where Holmes had been retired for 2 years and returned ring rusty with-out any warm-up bouts before. Only loss where he was ever stopped.
