In the 1980s, Audi was a high-end German car brand no one seemed to want to touch. But new designs, and a focus on technology and build quality sent sales skyrocketing and turned Audi into the luxury brand of choice for a generation of buyers. Now it is trying to keep the momentum going.

I believe Audi is and has been the industry leader when it comes to interiors. Extremely high quality materials, fit and finish, and design and execution have be the hallmarks of the brand for at least 3 decades. I just think they are top of the food chain in that area. Always have been. Where they struggle is electrical engineering quality. Like almost all German brands they continue to have long term glitches and issues with their electrical componentry and their mechanical engineering as well. My 2001 vw Jetta 1.8t was an absolute blast but was PLAGUED with issues ranging from electrical engine problems to ignition coils misfiring and this was multiple times over a 7 year period. Audi makes some of the most beautiful cars on the road and are my favorite company from an aesthetics perspective. But I simply can't invest my money in the brand until they can get extremely consistent with their engineering. Hint: Consult Lexus engineers about EVERYTHING EXCEPT DESIGN AND INTERIORS. Lexus isn't bad at all but to me audi is a cut above!

Well put! I own currently 2 Audi A4s/ One 03, and the other 2016. Love them both dearly. Prior to these I owned Several Vdubs. Yes they have their issues here and there, but with all seriousness. I found when you handled the maintenance when needed, and shopped around for parts, it really isn't all that bad. And the Feel, the drive, the fit and finish and the all over experience you get when you sit in, and move in these cars, cannot be beat. Yes Lexus has Reliable Toyota chassis/Power-trains in them, but they don't remotely prevoke that finesse you get when in Audi. I also personally dont find Toyota and Lexus (and many other brands really) Attractive looking anymore. They went from boring to hard lines design....

@@Amidat you are correct about being a long time ago. My problem now with the brand is that reliability has only gone up marginally and now they have downgraded all of the interiors to suit American buyers as opposed to what they used to do which was build german quality interiors in regards to fit and finish. Just don't find that appealing even though the gti will ALWAYS remain a desirable sweetheart in the industry and the jetta gli is pretty cool. But look at the Passat now...only one engine and it's a base engine. Boring. How can they compete at all. Maybe they will invest more aesthetically and performance wise in the new one if a new one even gets built.
@Amidat

@@gabevillarreal96 oh ok.... well Passat's only share a platform now with the A3. Audi's are much more differentiated from VW's now. You can only sustain niche for so long though. Audi knows this and that’s why they’re panicking because Tesla is now the niche, young, tech brand. Me and my wife bought a used 2009 Audi Q5. Some of the features that sold us was; great crash test ratings, arguably the best AWD system in the business, 2 Ton towing capacity, decent gas mileage and serviceability by myself. The 3.2L engine has been bulletproof to us (unfortunately I can't say that about the 2.0L Turbo) They built this car with the same parts all the way to 2017, making new and used parts supply abundant, which is important considering I do all the maintenance myself. 270hp and surprisingly spunky. While it does have its unique issues, we absolutely love this car and encourage anyone in the market to consider getting one.

Yep. The issue arose because Audi moved the driver seat slightly more inboard due to stricter side impact crash test ratings. That small amount was enough to throw some people off to where they were mistakenly hitting the gas instead of the brake.

The 2.0T is widely the most commonly used engine in Audis throughout North America and that engine, through several iterations, has had some pretty major reliability problems. I personally know several people who have catastrophic failures with the 2.0T. The 3.0T (supercharged) on the other hand has been exceptional. Of course every engine has some potential issues that need to be taken care of but overall Audi has been better than the other Germans, even though often perceived the other way around.

I drove an Audi for 11 years. It was a little underpowered, but it was absolutely the most fun car to drive (outside of the 1970s Mini I once owned). It always felt stable and I drove to work after a 3ft snowstorm with no issues. The only problem was after the warranty ran out… it cost over $200 to change a headlight bulb! That needed a special tool that only their techs had. The bulb was $22; the rest was labor. Yikes! I traded it in and didn’t fix the hole in the exhaust because it would probably have cost more than the car was valued. I’d definitely buy an Audi again.

I think the big thing that gave them a leap forward recently was the introduction of the virtual cockpit. As far as I know they were the first to do a full digital dash for their entire model lineup (outside of tesla), which other manufacturers were quick to follow suit. Also the infotainment is typically easy to navigate and the styling is contemporary, yet aggressive and elegant, something rivals like Lexus (and now BMW) could take some hints from. Lastly, although the interiors are great, I'd disagree with the last guy saying it's industry leading. I love my Audi's but I'll be the first to admit that Mercedes is a cut above in that category.

I have a 2008.5 2.0T TFSI A3 with 165,000 miles and I love it! It's a very peppy/quick and fun little car. The interior in this car is timeless (IMHO), as a lot of people tend to think it's only a few years old. However, engine components do start to fail at about 130k miles due to their older age(in German car years 😆). But as long as you keep up with their maintenance you don't run them into the ground, they'll continue to serve you well. My car runs phenomenally and I have had no catastrophic engine issues. However, if I were interested in a current model--I could only justify leasing one. And that goes for all other brands in its class. These cars have become so tech/ electronic dependent in such a short time, I just don't see them holding up for the long term purchaser at this point. Moreover, they have engineered them to the point where you almost have to take them to the dealer/ specialized mechanic for simple maintenance. Just to replace the brake pads you need an advanced diagnostic tool to communicate with the brake system module to electronically release the brake/ caliper, for example.

legitPLier and that makes sense, since that’s a domestic model(s) for them in Europe. I’m not sure about people in Europe taking better care of their cars though, what kinda of evidence do you have to prove this? Plenty of people in the USA take care of their cars, especially if you don’t live up North.

The way that Audi used to become one of the giants of the car market is that Audi did not try to be like others. Audi tried to develop the areas in which two giants Mercedes and BMW lacked attention. That was the 4 wheel drive cars. The Quatro of Audi, even if not the best, is one of the best ones. For the latest models, the interior of Audi cars is noticed to have very good high-tech screens, seats. Like Audi, another car that succeded because of pointing one skill of car is Toyota. Toyota sells most cars in all over the world just because those cars are the most reliable ones.

I still miss the 1996 A4 Quattro I reluctantly retired this year due to a steadily increasing rate of electrical failures and my loss of confidence that it would not strand me or my wife. I hope Audi doesn't overdo the electronic technology, given that so many of my problems have been electrical. My elder son still has the 2002 A4 Quattro I bought him as a university graduation present. It was 5 years old at the time, and it has served him well, but now it is showing its age.

There were two massive vehicle launches in the 90s that really catapulted Audi into the premium market - the A4 that launched in 1994, and then, the A6 in 1997/98. The A4 just looked a million miles ahead of everything else Audi had ever done before - no more ungainly Germanic Volvo style design, an Audi you could actually want. It was a world away from the boring old Audi 80. The A6 was a million miles ahead of anything else that BMW or Merc had done before. It was utterly gorgeous inside and out.

I don't remember things quite this way. Mercedes was always in a class by itself as a luxury vehicle. BMWs, at least in the 60s/70s weren't considered in Mercedes class and were considered quality German cars that handled well. In the 80s/90s then BMW started to get a reputation but still Mercedes was still held as the luxury standard. I think to this day Mercedes is one of the most high-image brands that are in the industry. BMW has a high image, but it is still known as a driver's car. Audi yes, they did rise to be near BMW and Mercedes but I still find people rate them a bit lower. I like alternatives to German luxury. I actually think Genesis has a chance to be as good once people get over the "its from Korea" nonsense that some buyers have in their heads now. I like Volvo but they need to refine their suspensions more and the move to all 4-cylinder engines didn't help them either.
