What is Mercedes DAS?
The DAS system worked by allowing the driver, in addition to the rotational movement of the steering wheel, to move the steering wheel closer to or farther from themselves. In this way, they could adjust the toe angle whenever they wanted-opening up a whole new dimension.

And was, and still is, illegal. The rules state that nothing could be altered on the set up after qualifying, unless unforseen circumstances. Being able to change toe during the race is breaking those rules. The "reason" why Mercedes was allowed to use it the whole season was because "it would cost too much time and money to alter the steering." Behind the scenes whining wolff did his usual blackmail by threatening to pull out everything Mercedes, decimating the field.

Why the f*** would you need to adjust the tow on the fly in a production car? In fact if your car has a tow-in or tow-out, your cars needs an alignment because all road-driven cars should have a neutral tow or else you will experience excessive tyre wear. Also DAS is not something game-changing, it isn't particularly hard to implement either. If it wasn't banned, every team on the grid would have it by the next year. It's just that Mercedes were the first to find a loophole in the definition of active suspension which had been banned. Hence they designed a system which can vary suspension geometry on the go without technically breaking the rules.

One day someone needs to take all of these situations, and secrets, and do a Netflix style series on them all, because I know Dale Earnhardt had a transmission modified to add a gear for a race before, clearly against the rules, but an amazing engineering feat at the time, especially to not get caught.

I wonder if the wheel actually pushed outward and was up to the driver to keep it held down to keep the toe angle where the driver wants it, because you would naturally hold it down a little more when hard turning and then when you are on a straight your arms could relax and allow the driver to adjust resistance by feel. I bet the road feedback through the wheel would be very interesting on something like that. Disclaimer I dont know anything about f1, just guessing at this stuff

The core rules DAS had to meet was that it was not powered and didn’t cause any impact to the suspension setup, as active or adjustable suspension was banned. As the system was entirely controlled through the push/pull by the driver, it was unpowered. Mercedes were also able to clearly show their slight tyre alignment changes didn’t impact the suspension as the alignment switch happened beyond the fixation points of all suspension components. Also, the main reason other teams wanted it banned was because they knew it’d take them months to design and incorporate such a system to their cars, given the full workings of DAS were unknown and it’d likely require a full redesign of their nose section of their existing cars.

Thats fucking SICK as FUCK. A live active alignment for stability and handling. It be even more cool that automatically did it with active dampening

This is a really cool concept and the fact that these guys were able to utilize it so effectively is impressive to say the least. Shoulda kept it legal bc once the other teams catch on, it would really elevate the sport even more. Too much innovation I guess

Saw a comment mention how they would love to see a race with bring what you have and your best driver. No dumb rules, just who’s better at engineering their car and driver mod. Of course the only exception I would want to see is that everyone has to have the same style/type race car if you will, but build it how you want to and modify how you want too. And go. Be really cool to see
