I worked in our family business for 27 years, having to run it for 22 years from the age of 23, worked 7 days a week, 80 hours a week. During the time I also did maintenance on site and it seemed to be good at the electrics and fault finding. I sold the business in 2021, now an adult apprentice at 45. I now work for the firm that did the main electrical work for us. I generally go to college every second Friday for a day, 1st year completed already.

@craig adams i am in a similar position to you. I work at my families business doing everything and anything to keep the company going. I do most of the maintenance and have taken an interest in the electrical aspect. Did you get to a point of feeling burnt out and itching for something more fulfilling work wise? This is how I feel and I am 30, considering “starting over” as an apprentice in the electrical trade. Any advice?

I'm 45 and mid life crisis lead to me wanting to do something more practical and make something of myself. Have opted for one of these courses in Plumbing (was thinking electrics but changed my mind). Have lots of practical skills to learn from scratch but hope within a year I can go and help out a mate without being too much of a hindrance.. 😏

My start came from family who owned a contract in business and I was always talk to use my hands and get a career with a trade. Spent a small stint in sales love working on the tools. Great video and great context for all those young people out there looking to get in the business

I have watched your company at work and I can say that I am mightily impressed with not only the way in which you run your company but with you yourself with your knowledge and how you treat your employees but I have to tell you that in my vast experience of 50 years you are an exception to the rule,there are company owners in the electrical trade flouting every safety rule in the book and I'm glad I bowed out when I did

I really like your videos and I find them really entertaining. I was able to catch some tricks from them however our standards are differs from yours. Here is my story: Last year at the age of 33 by my own decision I decided to change my well paid sw developer job to become an electrician. I am actually doing the third way next to my actual job on a night course which takes 10 months. I am dealing with electronics for almost 20 years which I love doing. I already installed and fixed a lot of things by my own safely and by the standards. I tought that it is time to have an electrician certificate next to my engineering degrees. By the time I would like to start my own company and collect more certificates to become even better.

Did the night class for level ; 2 day release for level 3 night class again for the regs got to invest in yourself no one will come and put their arm around you and fill your pockets full of dreams. If you are lucky enough to get an apprenticeship take the oportunity and listen and learn, don't worry about the mistakes its all part of learning. And If you have not got the grades dont worry say you will do whats needed to get on the course a wlillingness speaks volumes.

I am 38 and changing my career, finishing my C&G level 3 final exam on Monday. I am lucky that I have just been employed with a company that will help me with my NVQ, I have done the exactly the same as Luke at the same training centre. It took me a lot of time to get this opportunity, there was so many bumps in the way. The level 2 and 3 are simple enough to do and get on a course, they don’t come cheap though, I will be about £9,000 into training alone not to mention tools. At times I felt like cutting my loses, due to it be so hard to get experience, even offering free labour to learn and gain experience is difficult. As I can only guess electrician in my area are to busy to show someone how to do the job, or didn’t like the sound of my voice 😂🤣😂. Before the career changers take this path expect a hard and expensive route, but even though I haven’t started my new job yet, I’m glad I have done it.

Hi Kris. I’m also 38. I’m in the army until May but intend to start my electrician training straight away. Any advice you could share would be advantageous. I have everything planned from novice upto nvq lv3. At what stage shud I look at finding work as can work self employed in a difference profession until completion? Thanks mate

@@peterfletcher2611 Hi Pete, I would say start looking for employment straight away. The only advice I can really give is don’t give up, i contacted I think 63 electrician/companies and 6 months before I got a shot, I was frustrated and felt like I wasted all that money and wanted to cut my loses. I was offering to take annual leave from my current job to work for free to gain some experience and still struggled to find someone to give me the light of day. But from being in the trade the guy that makes the decision to hire will take your call, while he is crawling around a loft, in the most awkward position they will get another 10 phone calls during that time and your forgotten, even when they say send a email you will got lost in all the enquiries they receive. So don’t take it personally. Where in the UK are you looking?

I'm coming to the end of a 20+ year career in the military, and honestly the job I do currently in the armed forces doesn't pay very well outside in the civillian world. The balance of job satisfaction and relatively low wages on the outside just means I don't want to do it anymore. However, The job I do right now has some very technical and hands on elements, which I really love. But most of what the service has done with our trade means we're expected to do more and more menial administrative tasks instead of technical ones. That's why I'm looking at retraining as an electrician, I have had to demonstrate a good understanding of electrical safety, electronics and often work at component and PCB repair levels throughout my career. I would like to think at least some of the electrical theory I've done throughout my career would count at least in part towards the experience I would need to become seen as a "proper" electrician once qualified.

Apprenticeship is depending on economical situation in your country. In countries with weak economy employers hiring only experienced specialists as they can't waste time for training new electricians because of financial possibilities lack. This one of the reason why some people became to work independently after finishing college.

Looking for some advice for transitioning from an Electrical Technician/engineer to a Domestic installer. I hold a level 3 NVQ in Electrical engineering maintenance and also C&G 18th wiring regs. What would be the right steps to take in transitioning to a domestic installer? Would I have to do another NVQ level 3, or are there other options?

Work as a labourer or mate and then do the experienced worker NVQ. I know a builder on it who just did basic domestic stuff in his business. Seemed to be enough experience to get him on the course and he’s nearly at the end.

I did around a year as an apprentice in the late 80's. Packed it in as the money was really shit. I've been working in forestry ever since. I'm 53 now but fancy taking early retirement and getting an apprenticeship as a spark. I'm in Northern Ireland and there's a lot less colleges which teach the theory but I'm going to give it a go.

I’m 30 and use to work as a sparkys mate for 3 years 2 of which were completed at college but changed careers to be a field service engineer to earn more money but now I want to get back into the trade. I'm working for an FM company (Scotland based) as a maintenance assistant, trying to get them to put me on an adult traineeship/apprenticeship but if I could afford it I would so go back to college but sadly my local college doesn't seem to do Flexi learning (nights, distance etc.) below HNC level sadly that and having a mortgage does make it all that bit harder for us older folks..hand me a time machine and I'd go back and tell myself to pursue electrical like I originally wanted haha

Many thanks for excellent videos. We are with Scottish Power. They keep sending us emails about the need to change our gas/electric meter on saying it may be unsafe and not efficient. Our house was built in 1968/we have been here since 2003. Can they force us to upgrade our meters on these grounds. Either accept a smart meter or a new a new meter..please.

Nobody should have to work without payment just to gain experience. Nobody should have to pay for their education. It is a failure of government not to properly fund and support apprenticeship training. State support of education and training is an investment in the future generations of skilled people. I was born in 1948 and benefited from state education that continued to support me through college and university. I had the option to either follow the HND route or go to university to complete my education. It was Margaret Thatcher’s policies that killed off the apprenticeship training system and pushed everyone into university. Tony Blair continued her privatisation of State functions by charging for further education. The UK has finished up in a situation where it is now very short of older skilled and experienced mentors and tutors of up and coming generations, and an institutional attitude that everything has to be paid for. This benefits the well off and disenfranchises the poor and less well off.

Beyond basic education it is only fair that students pay something towards their education. (Though I think the current fees are way too high, they should be expensive.) I can remember teaching numerous professional students in their late thirties who had never had a full time job. They just went from one free course to the next, with no intention of working. They had a belief they should only do highly paid work because they were so well qualified. They were without exception all extreme left wing, and yet saw nothing wrong in workers supporting their lifestyle. People like that made a mockery of the system. I don't see why those that do not go into further education, should both start work years earlier and pay for the education of those that do.

@@markhorton8578 the problem with the contributory system is that unless it is means tested it is very unfair on the poor, and disadvantages willing students from these backgrounds.

For most apprenticeships you have to have at least a year of electrical work, and sone licenses so it’s hard to get into

my route was very long and complicated, start at 15, weekends school holidays ect with my uncle (fully qualified and experience industrail spark, left school started as a apprentice with him, we lost him 18 months in, left the idustry for a bit, went to night school and got my full qual, work for the company I was with for another three years (non trade related work ) whilst doing my jobs at weekends/holidays (napit registired) then went to work for a company doing domestic/commercail jobs for 4 years, now im full time on my own and about to take a young lady (34) on to complete her nvq level 3, who has been full time college student (3 days a week) and working with me 2 days and holidays for about 14 months

Great Content , Just done my level 1 Electric at college , and l start back in September to do my levels 2. But if l could get a Apprenticeship I would be on level 3 , This is so hard to get round the East Yorkshire. Area , But right now I am help Dan , Electrics, I ask him if l could do work Experience , for free , really enjoy it doing full Rewire , and leaning a lots , but right Now he Can’t take me on Full time apprenticeship, so if l can lean for free it Might pay off in the long run . ⚡️👊

I started life out in the Royal Navy and decided to have a career change to become a spark. I looked at all my options and they were pretty much what Jordan stated on this video. I chose the option which was to go down the Quick Course (as Jordan calls it) which I knew wasn’t the best option and had a lot of doubt. To be honest it was actually very good, and I learnt the very basics to work safely and the basics to do the job of a spark. As you can tell the was loads of gaps in my knowledge mainly in the construction side as apposed to the electrical. Because I quickly understood where the gaps in my knowledge were and focused on theses to better me. I also worked really hard holding down 2 jobs for a long period of time Re-wiring houses with sparks that had 30 years experience and I also watched every UKposts video possible to see how other sparks did jobs and then put them into action with a qualified spark. I also went to do my 2391 testing and inspecting and any other course to learn . Yes it’s not the best option but I feel I am more than adequate in what I do. To be honest it’s all about your attitude, if your passionate about it you will do your best work every time, I think that what’s deemed a short course it’s turned out longer as I have had to fill in my gaps of knowledge myself but I couldn’t choose any other option. It’s been a hard slog and I’m still learning every day but I love it 🥰

I used a company certified by the MoD called CTP, I did the domestic installers course which was backed by NAPIT, City and Guilds. I then went back and did 2391 testing and inspecting course. I didn’t just rest on that I worked for 2 years under an electrician

Yer I work for myself now, it was 2 years before I wen to out on my own but I didn’t want to then. Didn’t really have much of a choice. Yes I’m Part P registered that becomes part of your approved contractor. But in Scotland it’s not needed. Part P doesn’t exist up hear

Great how-to video! Maybe you can also try to get into touch with schools and especially universities, since from my experience, people start to study something and realise after 1-2 semesters, that they are in the wrong place. There might be a chance, that some are interested in going into the trades, but don’t have this career path within their search scope. 🙂

Like this video Jordan, I'm 39 and have funded and completed my 2365 lv2 by doing the revision/book reading at home then going to training centre to do the practicals and exams I did this while working as a site supervisor at a primary school. Now I work as a maintenance operative at a large school academy site doing bits of electrical repairs. I'm going to be booking myself onto my lv3 soon while at the same time as working at the school.i hope to find someone local to get more experience working as a mate for free.

I did the 30 day course of the evening in a college by the end of it I came out with less confidence than when I started, they rushed everything without any real explanation as why things are done let alone how. Now 15 years later I'm going to try again but do the full course over two years

I'm not sure what this piece of paper that you can get in 30-days to become a qualified electrician is but I'd love to have one!! In reality even if you do the short courses wihich take about 3 months ypu still have to do minimum 6 to 18 months work to get the necessary proof to complete your portfolio and NVQ

I think there is a lot to be said about comparisons to apprenticeship(young adults) and those older and bolder who complete a short course. It comes down to aptitude, some of the younger lot take longer to absorb the information, especially theory, yet those(not all!) older students want to be there and in many cases have spent a lot of money on these said course. It will definitely be harder to go straight in self employment route and that's what will take the time to build your reputation and clients up, however I do agree there are too many scenarios that you will come across that haven't been touched on the courses, inc apprenticeships. I fell in the same trap becoming a plumber in my early years and now will be looking to change becoming an electrician, I know a bit have a good understanding of buildings and other trades. Just need to apply the new knowledge via a short 30 day course, 😆 Cheers for the video🎉

I wish I had heard this 10 years ago. I had experience in the periphery of electrician ( plant/power tools) and a hobbyist in electronics ect. I was sponsored by a charity to complete the Domestic Installer course and passed with 96% ect. Months after gaining 17th the 18th came out and my qualifications were old news. The point I wholeheartedly agree with is for a mature student ( as I was ) you MUST have work lined up with an employer ( in order to be work assesed and gain entry to niceic/napit/ecs ect) . An employer is NOT interested in a 40+ year old student when there is a que of cheap and trainable 18yr olds waiting . If you haven't secured a place for after the course, there is little to no point doing it. On a concluding observation, the industry is often said to be ' crying out' for workers - but those allready in it are secure in the work they have, they can pick what jobs to do and this will remain the case indefinately. The demand is met by those in the know, family members and friends. If you do not already have a foot in the door with a firm, you will not get the job.

Thank you for the insight. As you mentioned, there’s often an outcry for new blood (this extends beyond the tradies), yet the path to train in those roles is not that simple, I would say even for younger people. I’m coming into my 30s trying to find a career that will pay me a decent living. I never went to university, so it’s been a struggle to move up over the years. I’ve come close to getting some opportunities of a career change in recent years (one of them with Openreach last year), but there’s always some kind of setback.

Love the channel, I completed a city and guilds apprenticeship in 1991. Worked in the industry for a while . Done part p and 17th in 2005. Not done much since but after watching guys like you inspired me to perhaps pick up the tools again . Anyway contact niceic only to find out that it would not be possible for me to register with any governing body as my qualifications are not recognised anymore. I’m gutted . Wondered what your thoughts are, seeing the state of the industry.

You need to start again ! 1st with an employer who can employ and provide you with assesment to enter the certification boards , THEN either a upgrade/refresh course to bring you up to C&G new standard or start the qualifications anew. On your own you will be unable to get back in to the trade. I tried and failed ( not for lack of trying) as I was too old (40+) and could not convince ANY employer to get me into the trade. Unless your known and trusted by someone, you will not become certified .Best wishes and hope you get your foot in the door BEFORE requalifying

Thank you for the video!! I am an adult learner currently at college three days a week on a Lv2 foundation in Plumbing/Electrical. My aim was always to become an electrician but it would appear city and guilds have piggybacked the Plumbing with electrical..... This isnt a problem as I am hoping to find an apprenticeship in the second year, the question is, does anyone understand the career progression in this at all? I take it I will recieve the LV2 foundation in Plumbing/electrical but with the apprenticeship, is that equivalent to NVQ Lv3? And if so, what does this grant me? Is this the 18th edition wiring regulations? I get confused when I hear AM2 as well!!! Does an apprenticeship cover everything i need to become qualified? At the age of 40 i spent 3 years of evening classes, 2 evenings a week and managed to get C/G level 3 electrical installation and C/G 2391 inspection and testing. I would advise getting a job in the industry if you can while attending college because going on site for the first time as an adult can be a bit of a shock.

I learnt alot about electrics from my maintainence engineer dad. I decided to take an electro-mechanical engineering apprenticeship (which does overlap into electrics). More recently, I decided that I wanted to lean more towards the electrical trade so I underwent 2 short courses (inspection and testing and 18th edition) and this coupled with my engineering apprenticeship, and employment experiance has enabled me to join a CPS and start up my own company. I found the short courses I went on only allowed and had experianced people enrolled. They would not have passed if they were not competent (1 person failed). I think the short courses you are referring to are the ones which are all inclusive and teach you "everything" to become an electrician. These ones im sure attract the wrong kind of people 🤦‍♂️

@@dg9015in my opinion, they don't really teach you the skills you need to become a good electrician, but do give you industry recognised certification which is often needed for CPS schemes. The courses are nothing compared to experiance gained on the job.

Great video, I watched your old one from 3 years ago as a comparison. Its been absolutely brilliant watching all of your videos to learn and gain some form of knowledge and you'd be surprised how much I used when it came to my 2391 as it all helped massively so thank you to all the team very much! I'm 29 and currently in the Army, I've just completed my level 3 and 4 DAO qualification, equivalent to the C&G with some Army bits thrown in. I'm looking into when I can do my AM2, Part P, JIB Gold card and maybe something like fire alarm or CCTV courses. My main issue is where to look for a job when I leave the Army, should I aim to be an electrician's mate, go for a maintenance sparky role, or commercial. I just don't have much of a clue about where to start in the industry but I have a passion for the subject and I'm sure I'll find where to aim for the more I look.

If your getting out pal I left in 2021 with 2391, 18th and DAO level 4 like you will be, I’ve managed to get a job as a electrician doing planned works kitchen and bathroom first and second fix without AM2 and Gold card at Places for people as they don’t require it. I am going to get my AM2 done so I’ll have both hopefully this year but just thought I’d let you know there is work out there for us on Civvy street 👍 all the best

i became an apprentice electrician in 1966, i served a five year apprenticeship. completed all my city and guilds, going to college every monday. went out into the big world, tried contracting for a couple of years.ended up as a maintenance electrician from 1977, until 2015 with the same company. when i retired my salary was 33,500 a year. i was told recently that the same job now pays 50,500 a year now. being a spark was the best move i ever made.

I've surprised myself over these last few weeks within the early days of learning and how much I have taken in. My only worry is once I have my qualifications how hard will it be to obtain work in the trade?

I am thinking of starting a course with ERRltd or engineering real results limited and was wondering if anyone knows or has completed this course or could recommend a better course for the Nottinghamshire area. The course is £7800 and takes roughly 18-24 months to complete. It is a study from home course with centres that you go to for the practical experience and exams. It seems to have mostly postive results on trust pilot. You'll receive your 18th edition, AM2, Level 3 City and guilds and NVQ etc

Currently on my 23rd year in the trade, The job has got a lot harder and become hard work before you start. Become a chippy as money is far easier. to earn. Part P has created more cowboys than ever before and become a painful interrogation for a lot of people

I’m 20 and currently been doing an electrician course for the last 4 months now, to be honest I haven’t taken any information in as all of the content so far has been via textbook and it’s honestly quite frustrating as I’d much prefer to be more hands on with my learning. I have started about the same time as you when I was 20, now I’m 22 finishing my level 3 EAL in electrical installation in about a month, I don’t even know whether I can find work when finishing, but I think I will start as a normal labourer and just go from there.

Well like my parents both say don’t get a trade always try and get a state job like a police or teacher because if the economy crashes in the future all them jobs will crash so any advice on what to say back to them thanks

Rishi Sunak (the guy who will most likely become our next Prime Minister) proposed cutting 91,000 civil servant positions in his previous role as Chancellor, so don't think being employed by the state means job security. Typically, once state jobs get cut they don't get replaced anytime soon, so good luck finding work as an ex-police officer or ex-teacher with such a limited skillset. Electrical faults don't stop occurring just because a recessions on - people might not be splashing out on full rewires, but there's still work to be had. A good spark will make significantly more money in the boom times, enough to see them through the bust times. Electricians are in demand more than ever and that demand will only grow as the current batch of old guys retire (there's already a shortage of sparks) and the country moves towards a zero-carbon future. It's your life, not your parents, so do as you judge best.

University is only good if ideally Russell group or Ivy league and Stem - mathematics, engineering etc or Finance, economics, computer science, law, medicine, dentistry etc. Only problem with a trade is can be hard when you are older

In Access training you can do weekends only, first step it's online Webinars so you don't need to leave the House and then you can chose the date for your practical training with no Rush, they online portal it's very clever.
