Max's undercut on Hamilton reminds me of Vettel's undercut on Leclerc at Singapore 2019, Ferrari themselves like Mercedes didn't expect the undercut to be so powerful!

Hello! I'm new to F1 and my English is a bit poor, can you tell me what an undercut is? And I heard another term, is it overcut? Or something similar. I wanna learn if anyone's willing to explain, thanks in advance!
@Prithvidiamond
@Prithvidiamond 2 роки тому
@@techpassion4126 I am going to explain it in the context of the French GP, because it is likely you saw what happened in that race, making it easier for you to understand. So if you remember, Bottas was the first of the front runners (and by that I mean the top 3 drivers) to make a pitstop. The very next lap, Max followed suit and came into the pits. This is the first attempt for an undercut. Bottas tried to undercut Verstappen and by that I mean, he wanted to make use of his newer tires he obtained after pitting to make up the gap between him and Verstappen to get ahead of him. The only way to cover this is either go long and try and overcut or to pit immediately to mitigate the time lost to Bottas as now Max will also have a new set of tires to match Bottas' faster pace. Now I will get back to what an overcut is later but there is another undercut attempt that occurred and that was the one that worked. It was the undercut of Max on Lewis. Lewis stayed out a lap or two longer on his older tires and so he didn't have the same pace as Max and so Max was able to make up the 3-second gap between him and Lewis using his newer tires and so when Lewis came out of the pits, max was ahead of him. Now I did mention I would explain an overcut. The overcut is where you preserve the performance of your tires for the end of your stint so that you can set very fast laps before you throw those used tires away in the pits and get a new set to continue the race, hoping that you jumped whoever pit before you. A great example was the one of Vettel in Monaco, he was managing his tires such that he was able to set some really quick laps before he pit. Meanwhile, Lewis tried the undercut and that failed and to cover off that undercut, Gasly pit around the same time and so when Vettel came out of the pits he was ahead of both of them (technically he was also assisted by Gasly holding Lewis behind because you can't overtake in Monaco and the fact that Gasly had a terribly slow out lap after pitting to a fresh set of hard tires because they take time to heat up).
@micahkiyimba8641
@micahkiyimba8641 2 роки тому
@@techpassion4126 F1 tyres lose performance the longer they are used. It mans drivers have to stop somewhere in the race to change to new tyres...sometimes more than once. If you are close behind someone...you can jump into the pits..change to new tyres.....then drive the next lap on new tyres while he is on old tyres during the same lap but far ahead...he pits after you to change as well,,but you will have passed him by then.That is UNDERCUT,,because you do all that while UNDER the driver ahead(behind him on track) but when he changes tyres like you,,,you jump him. OVERCUT is the opposite,,you wait for your rival ahead to pit for newer tyres he is now behind...but he fails to warm them up in time to go faster than you are going now..so you drive so fast that when you pit....you stay head of him.

For Lewis it wasn't just the In/Out Lap. In Fastest Lap listings Lewis was actually the 5th fastest driver on the day. The order on Fastest Lap/Personal Bests was VER, PER (on Lap 53!), BOT, VET, then HAM.... HAM's best lap off by some 1.006 seconds. So it wasn't just those laps. Lewis had basically lost pace throughout the duration of the race. It's possible the first stint wasn't so bad, but switching to defence from very early in the race for the one stop probably meant his pace got capped. Perez also on a one stopper, but he had speed in hand in the end.

I did the math on Google earth: The difference between (pitting in) the first and the last box is about 6 (!) meters. The pit lane is not parallel to the long straight. The first box is 20m further from the track compared to the last.

Biggest question is why Mercedes didn't pit Hamilton on lap 18 right after Bottas on lap 17, when they could see Bottas setting quick sector times on his outlap? Surely knowing the tire wear, they should've been like, "right we're probably giving the lead away but he's gonna be crawling on old tires, box this lap".

I usually like Jolyon analysis, didn't like it much. The pit part very insignificant to make it one of the reasons for the undercut. Also, asking Hamilton to be aggressive when verstappen was going to pass him, knowing that Hamilton's tires were completely done and if he would have tried something crazy he was going to risk the 2nd place with checo. I think verstappen did a great race, but Hamilton made the right decision to keep the 2nd place instead to make a nonsense risky move.

Robert Doornbos (Dutch former F1 driver, currently Ziggo Sport F1 co-host) thought a bit of the difference between the stops from HAM and VER could be due to the fact that the Mercedes pit is placed a bit different, so Lewis had a slightly longer distance to cover before he was in place for the pit stop.

Max's time in the pit lane was 29.8 seconds whilst lewis's was 30.3 seconds and max had nearly 2 seconds faster out lap than lewis's in lap and the rest of the time was for when lewis was exiting the pit lane but max was going flat out down the straight so he gained alot of time with that and all of them combined made that 3 second undercut. ( F1 please sign me i'm a genius )

I just read a comment of Mercedes on how they were surprised by the undercut and it show perfectly where they do it wrong: "But there is something we need to calculate, because we don't understand fully why we lost the position. In our simulations we get to 2,5 of the 3 seconds. It is something we need to investigate to work out the details to understand how the undercut came from so far." They just rely on simulations and calculations and not on thinking. The calculations are correct, but they don't understand them. Lewis was ahead by roughly 0.5 of a second or maybe even more when he came out of the pits. What the calculations of Verstappens in and outlap and Lewis' inlap don't show, is the overspeed Verstappen had at the start of his second lap when Lewis came out of the pits. That's where that 0.5 seconds went. Just plain thinking and not relying on simulations would have prevented the whole situation. By pitting Bottas, they forced Verstappen to pit the next lap. They knew he was going to. If they would have simply pitted Lewis in the same lap, there was no way for Verstappen to make that undercut. But they didn't because their calculations didn't count for the human element, the driver who can do an exceptional outlap.

@@chiefdenis Yeah but it doesn't make sense to use hards for 13 laps while running yellows for 20+ . I imagine degradation for yellow tires should be worse
@chiefdenis

@@opti-mus because when they put the hards on, degradation was very bad and the car was heavier due to more fuel load, the mediums could do the remaining 21 laps with a progressively lighter car due to less fuel and a more rubbered in track surface (the first set of mediums did 18 laps with a heavier car and poor track surface, so the second set was definately going to do more with improved conditions)

Running faster on fresher tyres, that's how you make up the lost time in the pits, if you do an extra stop. It's a matter of calculation. By the way, that's the difference between US ans F1. The fastest wins, not the one with most driven laps.
@theglitch312
@theglitch312 2 роки тому
No since the laptime is about 1:40s here, and a pitstop is 30s total. You'll only be 1/3rd of a lap down by the time you leave the pits. Both Max and Lewis completed the same number of laps. Max just had to make up the time of the extra stop. Which is possible since he has fresher tires worth about 1 seconds a lap on average for 30 laps. Hence why it was so close at the end. The strategy barely worked.
