It's funny to think back to how much I used to *hate* Samsung software years ago, because they really do now show how important getting it right is. When you compare the Fold 4 to things that are available outside the USA, yea it's a very conservative design, you could even call it "dated" within its niche. But boy do I just not want anything else when you've got that taskbar and multitasking features that just work so well vs other competing UIs.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is by far my favorite design. The only problem is durability. Once they figure out a way to make the flexible screen with some sort of gorilla glass it will be ready for the masses.

For the simple reason that the Z fold is in its 4th iteration, and Samsung are slacking, because they feel that they can! In terms of software Samsung have got it down though. Samsung really brings the efficiency gain of the 8+G1 out really well, I'm quite surprised! Also, I really like the microphone on the Fold 4. It sounds really crisp and clear, not kinda muffled like the others.

I am glad you got a hold of a Galaxy Fold 4. I want to get that one, but am holding out for an actual leap forward in the tech, not another refresh. Great comparison video!

I ended up going with the z fold 4 as I've had a note since the note 2 and I don't think I could have a phone without a pen ever again. The only 2 downsides are the outer screen and the visible crease, but the outer screen isn't as bad as I thought it would be, I can use it easily for most quick tasks. The crease is only noticable if you are looking for it, in any normal use I haven't been able to see the crease at all. I would love to see a slightly larger outer screen on the z fold 5 when they make it and a built in pen would be an amazing touch. It really is the best of everything for my own use though and I can't be upset with any aspect of it.

Great comparison, still got my fold2, nothing in the fold 3 or 4 compelled me to spend a small fortune to update. Hopefully fold5 does.

I was rolling with a fold 3 and now I picked up the flip 4. I would go back to fold 5 when it comes out. I much prefer the front screen of the fold 4 compared to others due to being able to message with 1 hand and just use everything that is out there on the phone

Having used the mix 2 fold 4 and oppo Find N the fold is still the best simply because it’s the best of all worlds cover screen is big enough but still comfortable in one hand considering the phone is thicc even the mi mix is a struggle to use one handed with just the cover screen (I live alone and in a wet rainy country so using a one phone one handed is your only option or get soaked) the flex mode is fantastic makes me feel like I’m using an old Nokia communicator when I’m typing messages and it’s just more refined I like their approach get a design that works and refine it to near perfection

Yes, I agree that the screens on the Fold could be a bit wider without any border at their left size. Aside from this Samsung is right with their hinge design.

DEX and video out is a game changer. Having the proper form factor on the outer screen, is almost enough to compensate for the gap in software. Have you tried the Honor foldable?

I tried different folding phones and finally got Mate xs2, a full body cover case is very necessary as it drops easily when unfold. However, the overall experience is good, very fast charging and good screen and camera. No Google and 5G don't cause much problem indeed.

From a reviewers perspective i can understand you could overlook the lack of ip rating and warantee for western buyers on such expensive phone's, i was tempted by the mix fold 2 but the mentioned issues and no wireless charging the fact that as a first time fold owner, i could get samsung care plus included in the pre purchase and a big discount that definately beat any other foldables price point with doubled up storage bump. When looking at it like that if i wreck this 2k plus phone i can get a brand new one by shipped the same day for 299$ aud, on the negative side the lack of fast charging is a missing flagship feature, it could be thinner but i came from a mi 11 ultra and i was frustrated by the size and weight and difficulty to use one handed the z fold 4 is confortable one hand "with a phone grip*" hope this helps the undecided

Would have been cool to have the Oppo Find N in there as well, as it stands nothing can really beat the Fold 4, they have so much more of an advantage compared to other companies in the game, Huawei could have put up a decent fight had they not been hamstrung by the whole US/China trade war

I pick the Zfold4 and not even a percent of regret. For the looks, huawei and xiomi owns as these two are so dmn beautiful device. If you just want to showoff, then pick either the huawei or xiaomi. But, the zfold4 wins this. Hardware, software. Pen, flexmode, and my favorite, the Dexmode. As an IT guy, zfold4 is much better choice.

Software is literally the only thing keeping me on the Fold 4. Really hoping they go all out with the hardware next year for the Fold 5. Maybe even a Fold 5 Ultra?

The hinge flexing is subjective for sure because I prefer Samsung's non spring loaded approach.

I haved also used and tested some foldable phone including Z Fold 1, Z Fold 3, Z Fold 4, Mix Fold 2, Vivo X Fold and Mate Xs2. In my opinion, despite the fragile look, outer foldable is very durable and has the best design. This design is smart that it takes advantage of every space it can. I feel that it is no need to have 2 seperate screens, 2 seperate front camaras. Therefore, outer foldable phone is the best design, making the phone lighter, thinner and more comfortable to use. The most surprising part of the Mate Xs2 is its durability. I dropped this phone many times, on hard surface, with no protection, but the screen still works normally without any scratch. Well done Huawei! In the other hand, my Z Fold 1 and Z Fold 3 got broken screen (or cable problem) after several normal drops. What a shame, Samsung! The problem of the Mate Xs2 is the low battery life and no GMS

Guys , if you disable the Miui optimizations in developer settings , you can view UKposts in split screen (landscape) but the orientation is reversed. If you open the phone in portrait mode , the split screen is in landscape but if you rotate the phone on landscape the split screen is in portrait. Also, I noticed all my notifications are coming through without delay and the side bar is disabled

Nice summary. All of them have flaws. Would have been nice to have a discussion about the lack of Google Services on the Xiaomi and Huawei phones which is a deal breaker for some of us. Even without that though, software is paramount. Anyone that got tricked into buying a Microsoft Surface Duo knows that so I would wait for years of proof from Xiaomi and Huawei before ever diving into their phones even though I like their form factor better. Too bad but it's the way it is. Fold 4 for me.

Why did you run the temp tests a) folded 2) w/o a case ? I'm asusming both have a impact on heat dissipation, and IRL phones will be unfolded, for gaming, and with a case.

How much to buy

Question regarding the Mate Xs 2 - How much stronger is the screen on it compared to the fold 4? Because on the fold 4 when you close it it's durable. So you only need to be careful when you open it, but are worry free when it's closed. whereas in the xs 2 it's a constant durability concern (how do you put it in your pocket? Will your keys scratch it?). I have the fold 3, and when closed I accidentally made it fly in the air and hit the ground a few times, and it's completely fine.

Well yes the others outside the US are awsome and have bold designs but when you have to worry about pouring something you should not they fall way short the fold 4 is IPX8 and as far as UI's the fold 4 has it all multi tasking the task bar and samsung also works with some apps to be fold friendly me personally don't want to worry about splashes or pouring if my folding phone ain't IPX8

I prefer the Oppo Find N design. You don’t have one for the channel? Compact when folded (which should be the main point of foldables), big and landscape when opened.

Im using iphone14 pro max as primary and samsung z fold4 as secondary phone but i really love this phone.... Im also. Thinking to buy mi mix fold2 but i already have 3 phones now.. Iphone 14 pro max, samsung fold4 and lg velvet. Fold 4 i got for 3000 with rogers 1tb version, iphone 256gb and lg velevt 128 gb.... I can replace lgvelevt but i love that phn too using from a year and half now never gave me any problem and cant replace samsung with mi too... I live in canada and i think they dont have any service centre here thats why

In reality fold 4 is more practical than the other. You must operate folded phone by one hand only! This is the idea of folding phones. Mostly fold users before have compact smartphones. And yes samsung is smart than the other's : ) ...

I really do wonder why Samsung didn't go for a design like Huawei, I feel confident they could pull it off but there has to be a reason they haven't done it yet. I'm assuming something with reliability. I don't mind the increase in thickness tbh but I feel they could do better with the crease and the gap when it's closed. So how do you pocket the Huawei?

I am an OPPO Find N fan. These three are too big and bulky for me. The OPPO is a much better design, IMHO. I am glad that Google has now moved to this design for their foldable and ditched the Fold lookalike. Out of the three, I would choose the Huawei XS2 as the design is clever and contemporary, rather than the Fold, a bit Nokia last century, although the Mix2 is interesting.

I love how symmetrical the front screen on the xaiomi looks, too bad it suffers from overheat. I was gonna buy it until i saw this video. Youre a great reviewer. I dont think Ive seen any reviewer expose the xiaomi overheating

Such large phones and yet only one USB-C port, Xiaomi still rocking USB 2.0 while Huawei and Samsung does 3.1 so it has DisplayPort out (video out) but neither of these have headphone jacks, for such large devices you would at least expect a headphone jack and two USB-C ports, but no, you have to get Asus phones for those features, or Sony with a splitter cable.

Thanks for the review. For westerners I think the fold 4 is the best. There are no perfect foldable, there are compromise with every one of them. Nice to see though how the folding phones developed in just a few years. I hope in the coming years we will get some nicer desings and more polished tech. I have the fold 4, its the first foldable I ever had. Antutu is over a million for me though, so I think you just done the test after the other test? Good review as always.

In my opinion, talking about keyboard sizes and the size of items visible on the screen is totally banal, since the operating system allows you to change the keyboard applications and change the size of the fonts to be displayed.

The other screens are a lot bigger than the fold 4, but the fold 4 software is way better for foldables.
