Yeah but the fact that both laptops use pretty much ultrabook cpus is also a thing.. theyre designed to run at low frequencies and boost up high in short bursts and not for long heavy use. Also it was tested on the laptops screen which is what ruined the performance by quite a lot compared to plugging the gpu to another monitor.

4:19 Thunderbolt 5 will have 80 Gbps bandwidth up and down at the same time. Some cables/ports/controllers (information is limited here, but you get the point) will have a feature to sacrifice one down/upstream for the more important one have 120Gbps/40Gbps. That 40Gbps will probably be enough for sending back the video to the laptop while leaving the 120Gbps for PCIe bandwidth between the GPU and the rest of the components.
@1InLight1
@1InLight1 5 місяців тому
The 120/40 throughput distribution mode is only available for video streams e.g. external displays, for pure data going to the system it is "mere" 64gbps (equivalent to pcie4.0 x4), which is the same as in Oculink-2 available since 2017. This is because, while tb5 chipset supports interval speeds of 80 gpbs and even 120 gbps, which it utilizes to "speak" to external devices, it still only incorporates 4 lanes of pcie4 to "talk back" to the system e.g. cpu. So tb5 wouldn't bring much to the table as for performance, but rather improvements in convenience for some.

Surprising to see Thunderbolt 3 in a laptop of that age but then I guess it was also quite an expensive model back when it was new. Have you done any TB3 eGPU testing to settle some arguments? there's a lot of discussion about "the fastest GPU that is worth using over TB3" and people aren't really sure, some say anything faster than a 3060 isn't really worth it but with the prices of these GPU's falling fast in the used market the $/frame calculation isn't fixed and it might actually be worth using a 3070/3080 eGPU or even something from the 40 series in a few years.
@CHA0SBLEEDS
@CHA0SBLEEDS 6 місяців тому
My friend has a 3080ti in his eGPU set up, and a 2060 laptop. In some games his 2060 actually performs better, so it kind of burns him that he bought a 3080ti. He was trying to get max framerate in APEX Legends. We were supposed to test my 3060, but we haven't had the time to meet up in awhile. Also I bought my 3060 for about $140USD, 3080s go for about $350-$400 USD (dell variant) here in Canada.

Very interesting! Couple this with the price of an eGPU and enclosure, no wonder eGPU's don't seem to be popular with current Thunderbolt technology. While Thunderbolt 5 may provide a better expereince, I suspect it still won't be on par with a similar internal GPU. I am not so sure if future versions of Thunderbolt (beyond 5) will be an optimal solution either, as PCIe used by the dGPU may evolve faster than Thunderbolt, leading to a situation where a similar eGPU is always handicapped when used with Thunderbolt. If some new technology standard came out that let us easily tap into the full power of PCIe (or whatever eventually replaces it), perhaps that would allow an eGPU to close the gap in performance.

Great take on this, I await TB5 with hope :) I run a zenbook flip with an eGPU that does well using a RTX 3070. That's a 12500H CPU & TB4. Very portable laptop/tablet by day and some gaming when home. It's the use case that works not a desktop comparison. New things in the eGPU space are the GPD G1 and ONEXGPU, a more portable eGPU with a120w 6700M XT inside. This uses TB4 but also Oculink, that some mini laptop and gaming handhelds have (esp GPD's) There is also the fact that USB4 on amd based laptops may not have TB3 support, so eGPU access is more possible.

OEM hardware engineers could make a PCI-E/M.2 extension to the outside of the laptop like a USB port. That could solve a lot of issues. Ive always wondered why OCuLink has never been implemented for laptops. It can provide a direct PCI-E interface with more lanes.

Hey Jarrod, here’s an idea to keep in your back pocket for a future video, with PCie 5.0 nvme support coming to future laptops, slapping a Oculink port in the unused NVME slot should result in a similar PCIe bandwidth as eight lanes of gen 4. Running an Oculink cable from that port to an eGPU should eliminate bottlenecks on two fronts, raw data transfer and bypassing the thunderbolt controller. In theory, you should only be limited by raw CPU performance at that point.
@1InLight1
@1InLight1 5 місяців тому
There are already laptops with nvme pcie5.0 ports in the market, the only caveat is there are no oculink solutions with pcie 5.0 support, we'll have to wait for Oculink-3 standard if that ever is released.

Thank you for the informative video. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the Wi-Fi slot for a USB stick, which can provide Wi-Fi functionality for just $5. Some laptops have PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 lanes, and it would be interesting to see a comparison of these options. For example, if I were to purchase a $500 second-hand RTX 3090 and a $500 used laptop with a good i7 processor, could this setup outperform the best available laptops? Personally, I'd prefer to upgrade the external GPU rather than the laptop itself. My current laptops include one with an i7 12th gen and another with an i7 8th gen.

Yeah that's the issue with both low end Laptop CPU and high end desktop CPU plugged in through a eGPU thunderbolt dock. Heck even on higher end machines it will have a similar problem where it will not be as fast as it would be if the card was used in a proper desktop setup. Thunderbolt 3/4 don't have the necessary bandwidth to get even close to desktop performance. However I heard that Thunderbolt 5 will change all that since Thunderbolt 5 will offer double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt4.
@henrikg1388
@henrikg1388 6 місяців тому
I agree, but just don't understand why the talk is all about Thunderbolt, which is proprietary and USB4 is just about the same. Upcoming standards should be open and not proprietary, including AMD for one. Fuck Thunderbolt, unless they keep it as an open standard.
@Fender178
@Fender178 6 місяців тому
@@henrikg1388 Well the next closest eGPU technology is Oculink which is what the Xgmobile is based off of and which the gaming laptop handhelds the GDPWin Max2 use to hook up eGPUs to those and that tech came from the server world. If AMD could adopt oculink I think that would be huge.

Last year I bought a laptop with 12700h and 3060 instead of 6800h and 3070 hoping that in the future I'll plug in eGPU in my thunderbolt 4 port, and call it a day, this was the move I regret the most! Remember kids, there is no profit in building a PC or buying a laptop (framework laptops doesn't count) sacrificing productivity that you can get here and now for technologies that may or may not be useful to you in the future, you can be stuck with the setup you built for a long time and by the time when you earn enough money to use those technologies your whole system (or a laptop) will be too outdated for them to somehow impact the overall usability and productivity of your system

Thank you, THANK YOU for mentioning this 4:50 Jarrod. Far too many people forget this exists when thinking of EGPUs, and it's actually the OG solution for the whole concept of using an external, desktop gpu with a laptop. Also yeah, good argument (also understandably why you hardly ever mention EGPU via direct pcie in your channel), but please remember that using an EGPU is most useful to people who have an obsolete laptop with an obsolete GPU, rather than to future laptop owners thinking of this as an use-case right off the bat after purchasing the laptop: really, it's more a matter of "obsolete laptop to somewhat decent desktop makeshift solution, until i get a new machine where i could re-use this gpu", than "mobility to me is paramount, therefore i seek compromise and embrace poor value". I've honestly always looked in a confused way at the relatively new trend of EGPUs via thunderbolt, never made sense to me... aesthetic over functionality and logic, a similiar concept of electrical instruments over an acoustical (to play the traditional, conventional acoustical sound): it defeats the purpose and will never be as good, it's just an inferior imitation for the sake of who-knows-what. Though, with some small modding and depending on how easy is to remove the lower panel a small hole hidden below the laptop wouldn't be that unsightly... or could prolly buy a spare bottom panel, one when carrying the laptop around, one with the hole when keeping it on the desk, it's actually quite practical if one gets a laptop designed to be easily opened.

I wonder if you can output from the GPU to an external monitor instead of the laptop and get better performance that way. I assume that this way thunderbolt bandwidth won't need to be shared for both, input data to the GPU, and output rendered franes from the GPU, so probably less stutter since there wouldn't be as much bandwidth constraints. It would also probably make more sense, since you can't really bring this setup with you anywhere and it's always stuck at home, probably next to a monitor/TV anyway. Does this work at all? If it does, does it perform better? Would be nice if you could try it out sometime in the future. Really appreciate your videos, the quality is amazing as always.

Hi Jarrod, thanks for amazing effort. i have a question, does lower powerful graphic card for example 3060/3070 have lesser FPS drop ? does the TB3/4 bottleneck become lesser for those GPU? So the FPS drop might not as much as 4090 ?
@Just_An_Ignacio
@Just_An_Ignacio 6 місяців тому
Most of the time the CPU is the limit factor to get agressive frame drops, except when something happens unexpectedly and the GPU gets to 100% usage from a moment to another (like explosions and stuff). You can see if the CPU or GPU is overused and may be the cause of frame drops with Rivatuner and Afterburner (performance monitoring software). Thuderbolt 3 and 4 have 40Gbps unidirectional bandwidth, so normally, the weaker the GPU, the lesser the bottleneck. But the sweetspot tends to be the 60 series. Because is better to have 65% of a 3060 than the 75% of a 3050 (for example) .

@@Just_An_Ignacio thanks for explanation, seems for our current technology with TB 3/4, the sweetspot is nvidia 3060 or Amd 6600xt/6650xt for EGPU .. still worth to consider than having IGPU .. thanks a lot

E-GPU's seem cool until you factor in the cost. It's almost always cheaper to buy a desktop-replacement laptop, and always cheaper to buy a desktop. For people like me who float around a lot and can't justify having a desktop in one of my spaces that sits dormant for 8-9 months out of the year - I'm really hoping Framework can make enough waves in the industry to push everyone toward upgradability to turn laptop chassis into upgradable frames. If they offered a 7945HX (or HX3D) and 7900m (or equivalent desktop replacement setup) I would have bought that even with the waitlist instead of the heavily discounted Legion 7. Being a "digital nomad" with the current state of laptops is less painful than it was in 2020 (when I last upgraded), but it still sucks pretty hard to have to buy a whole new machine when it should be entirely possible to buy a swapable mbo and/or gpu deck for the existing chassis I actually really like, even if it was only 20% cheaper - When you're talking about a $2500-$3500 laptop, $400-500 can be the difference between someone justifying an upgrade or skipping entirely for a year. I know there are engineering challenges in designing systems like that, but if framework can do it then so can the established giants. And no, they don't need rgb to puke all over it for an extra $500 because I'm not 12.

If you have a GPU that you’re not using, eGPU enclosures go for $300 - $500 US. They usually also contain some sort of hubs. I have a model with an NVME slot as well. Plop any old 4C with this and you can game. If you are BUYING all the parts this doesn’t make sense…but for giving an old laptop new life and saving a few bucks…AND having the possibility of upgrading you GPU along the way… It also gives you portability. You can take the laptop with you for day to day activities and then plug in one cable at night for a sesh. This also means you don’t have to pay the dGPU tax and maximize the CPU in your laptop instead of settling for a lower CPU just to get a 4050 that’s arguably already obsolete (6GB). Paying $200-250 for a used desktop GPU is cheaper than buying a new $2000 laptop when you want to upgrade graphics. Yes, bandwidth is an issue, and the less said about XConnect or using an internal NVidia with an external AMD (or the other way around, but…let’s be honest, that ain’t happening all that often), the better. The connection is notoriously twitchy. All that being said, it’s not stupid, but more like a niche.

Not really, you can pick up used 3060/3070 and a Razer Core X chassis for £300-400 if you shop around easily. Used of course but something like this will breathe new life into a laptop with TB3. I have one for when I need a bit more power than the dGPU in this 10th gen laptop can provide but I can't really afford to go buy a brand new laptop with a much more powerful dGPU, it's hard to find nice ultrabook laptops with dGPU's these days as well... everything with a dGPU is either a gaming laptop made of crappy plastic or a 'workstation' with a giant price tag.
@thomashenderson3326
@thomashenderson3326 6 місяців тому
I never said it was stupid. I agree that it's niche, hence the "almost always" qualifier - because my workloads are both CPU+GPU intensive, the CPU on an older laptop is going to be a horrible bottleneck for me. I've priced out dozens of different upgrade paths and none of them make sense in the performance-per-dollar vs just waiting, saving, and upgrading a year later than I would need the eGPU anyway. I have to live pretty minimally so I'm never in a situation of having a 'spare' desktop GPU sitting around, nor would I want to be. Back when I had a desktop rig, every time I upgraded my old stock got sold to recoup some of the upgrade cost. As it sits, my last machine was about $700 annualized with up front cost + maintenance, so if I can keep it around that, it's viable. Given that an egpu would have increased my cost by more than $500 minimum for the final year of service it just doesn't make sense in my situation when I could just save that $500 for when I upgrade next - which is what I did. The biggest argument for me is the sustainability piece, anything that extends the life of a laptop is great, but for me it also has to make financial sense - hence why I'm hopeful about DIY and RTR making some small gains in the laptop space.

Lenovo are making a special thinkbook 14+ for other places around the world, it is a 14 inches laptop with intel H series CPU, it has two m.2. slots available. And one of the m2 slot is under its hidden usb2 port, there is a cover for that port. So u can buy a oculink transfer PCB, take it from pcie 4.0 to oculink port with no bandwidth lost. There were people tested the result, even u put a 4090 on it, the result are still acceptable with marginal performance lost compare to the desktop.

Before I built a PC I was intrigued by the notion of an eGPU. Then I realized that the cost of an enclosure is basically the price of a budget tower without a GPU. Ultrabook + RTX 2060 eGPU = ultrabook + RTX 2060 budget PC in price. Might as well get two whole computers with better performance for the same price…
