Today we will be looking at how I built my homemade electric jet engine from scratch. I spent the last year and a half putting this project together, and am finally ready to share it with you! Thanks for tuning in!

The problem with Arduino and ignition is that, the ignition makes el.spark with chreates small, very small emp (electro magnetic pulse) and that will mess up the Arduino.

Dont stop trying.... 👍 I may be wrong. But in your case the centri compressor is compressing and you are expanding the compressed air and then mixing fuel. Then igniting. The compression is already lost. Secondly theres no loop i.e. the thrust produced is not driving the compressor.. Mix the fuel in the compressor output and ignite. With an nozzle.. That may give a better thrust

Thanks! I'll be adding a nozzle to up the chamber pressure in the future, and I'm working on a new engine that'll run off an exhaust driven turbine so it'll run on it's own (like a proper turbo jet)
@alexshi9320
@alexshi9320 2 місяці тому
I think you need to have a larger nozzle geometry so the exhaust can have the same pressure as the ambient pressure. Right now you can see it’s greater. It will make the engine more efficient
@Neally
@Neally 2 місяці тому
I made a video after this one where I compared the performance of different sized nozzles on the engine, and the nozzle that did the best was about half the size of this one.. It was kinda surprising

nice work! do you have a flame arrestor or some sort of mitigation in the off chance of a flashback?
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
Thanks! In this application I didn't include one because it's an open system, and the propane is at a way higher pressure than anything else in the system so there's no way for air and the gas to mix in the fuel line

The connection to the screen is probably really susceptible to electrical noise. Same reason I had to ground the case and shield wires in my 3d printer. It might might help in future designs if you look into creating a path for the tin can to dissipate. Something like a wire with a diode to the neutral, or literally grounded to your wall. I'm not totally sure if that makes sense in wireless electronics though. Something I've done before is 3d print a case, cover the inside in copper tape with a layer of kapton over top, and then solder a bits of the copper tape so they form a proper cage, and then connect that to the ground on the arduino.
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
Yeah I really like the shielding idea for the Arduino itself, I think I'll build a properly shielded enclosure for the next tests

I had a project where I controlled a high voltage generator, like the one you use as an ignition coil, through a relay with an Arduino. One thing I noticed was having the HV generator fire and arc would cause the Arduino to freak out, even worse with more voltage or time. My hypothesis is that it makes an EMP which destabilizes the Arduino, but not irreparably? Restarting the Arduino would make everything fine again. In your case, it would be strange for an EMP to make it all the way to the Arduino from *inside* the metal housing of the engine, though. Edit: Or approximately exactly what you said about 20 seconds later lol
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
Yeah I was totally shocked by how strong that field was, but looking back it makes sense considering how high that voltage actually is. Electromagnetism is a crazy thing!

And what electrical power does that "compressor" consume? And what cfm it produces?
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
It's a 240 watt power supply, but I doubt the motor uses the full wattage. And I've not done the math or experiments to find the cfm or volumetric flow rate
@Zortorond

@@Neally Than it is for sure it does not pump enough air for that size of combustion chamber to get even close to it's maximum potential. I would start at about 2-3 kilowatts motor, use leaf blower compressor and work the hell out of the combustion chamber design making it able to keep the flame reliably and for at least half of the rpm diapason without the spark on. Also to produce any decent thrust you need a nozzle of the proper geometry. The good news are that work is actually the most difficult in designing of a jet engine and IF you'd be successful you'd need to add just a car turbo to get a real engine.
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
Yeah I definitely agree, I figured it wasn't getting enough air when it started spitting those massive fireballs due to incomplete combustion. The compressor wasn't designed specifically for this build, it was more so a matter of convenience because I built it for a different project. I'm gonna weld up some different nozzles to put onto the engine too because I really want to see what kind of thrust its actually capable of.

it's a beautiful edf! but it's an EDF with an afterburner. don't stop trying man jet and EDF has completely different ways to achieve one goal.
@Neally
@Neally 4 місяці тому
I see what you're saying, but I don't think it applies to my design. The blower is a compressor rather than a fan, so if I had a tighter nozzle on the end it would create pressure in the combustion chamber, which and EDF doesn't have and wouldn't do. I appreciate it though, thank you!

That basically means he'll have to add a turbine which is powered by the burning of fuel, which in turn powers the compressor. Right?
@Neally

Exactly, it essentially works the same as a turbocharger in a car. That's where turbo jets get their name from✌️
@superdutyf450
@superdutyf450 4 місяці тому
@@Neally guys as an engineer (backyard and all) no not at all turbo jet nothing close other than the turbo looking thingy ran on brushless motor, I'm not knocking your project at all in fact I'm working on an axial compressor jet engine myself one to run and self sustain off kerosene, what I meant by the concept of what we watched was the compression of air is from an electric turbo and it relying on that to compress the charge, the thermal expansion just speeds up the mix thus adding a little thrust to the load sensor try it with real turbo, a combustor, diffuser, sustain flame front and idle the thing

Isn't it really just a supercharger with an afterburner?
@Neally
@Neally Місяць тому
I looked into the definitions of things again to double check before I answer.. So this engine is called a motorjet, it's a motor driven compressor that feeds a combustion chamber to produce thrust. I don't think it would count as an afterburner because an afterburner is a secondary combustion stage, where my engine one has a single stage. Think of this like a turbojet without a turbine section
@N330AA
@N330AA Місяць тому
@@Neally True, you are essentially doing the same thing as an afterburner does on a jet engine though - Increasing exhaust velocity and thus thrust. The difference is an electric motor is doing the first stage rather than a gas turbine engine. So it's probably inexplicably inefficient. Either way, i like it.

@@NeallyI don't think we can call it an engine until the turbine powers the compressor. This might be called a electric jet motor in it's current state, powered by electricity and unable to self sustain on fuel. But I'm rooting for you and can't wait until you hit that point! Keep at it! I see a 3d printed metal turbine and compressor in your near duture
@Davidfirefly

Actually we can call it a jet engine it's just the compressor is replaced by an electric one ,the system is somehow different but it's the same output which is propulsion@@gutrali
@gutrali
@gutrali Місяць тому
@@Davidfirefly well yes, you can call an apple a potato if you would like. Just because they are both round does not make it right. A jet engine is self sustaining, do you know any that are not? The engine pictured here is not self sustaining ... It will only live as long as the battery does, regardless of how much fuel you have available. You can't utilize the output to compress the input ...... Please Find and name any other jet engine where that's true? Your claim that it only needs to produce propulsion is also wrong. A rocket produces propulsion but it's not a jet engine, is it? There are also jet engine gensets that produce electricity, not propulsion. Same for jet engine powered helicopfers? They produce rotational mechanical force that is directly utilized. The motor pictured on this video doesn't even need to burn fuel in order to output MORE propulsive force! In fact it doesn't need fuel and can get by with even less electricity if just he used a modern EDF. I checked the numbers. This isn't a jet engine , it's a novice science experiment. Nothing wrong with that.
@cosmorito961

@@gutrali you're confusing jet engine with "turbo jet engine", jet engine has many different types ( RAM, SCRAM, TURBO). This one just uses an electric compressor, it can be called jet engine as the principle of working is same.
