When the Steam Deck came out last year, I didn't even know it came out. I'm a PC games at home guy-- at least I thought I was. However, after six months, I'm not sure I can go back.
Here's a long-term review... sort of. Think of it more as a personal reflection.

You forgot to mention you can now get a *Certified* Refurbished Steam Deck from Valve for 320$, thats for the 64gb model which is really all you need, especially if you upgrade the ssd, its 420$ for the 256gb model and 520$ for the 512gb model.

for me high settings are still needed on pc (1080p 27inch monitor), but on the deck i dont see the difference as much so i play at low to medium. Forgot to mention 40hrz/fps. On pc it doesnt feel right, but on deck it's good (maybe because of kbm on pc and sticks on deck)

Absolutely 👍 The graphics on the steam deck already look awesome, with sometimes just a few tweaks required. Getting the latest and most high performance gfx tech doesn't give as much of a visual or actual "smooth" performance boost like we'd like anyway nowadays, so it's kind of pointless, like an endless rat race.

As a father of a 2 year old... the Steam Deck saved my gaming. I am able to take care of my son while he is sleeping, sitting next to him with headphones. I can lie in bed next to him at night and play for an hour or two, while he is asleep. I can play when there is downtime and the second I am needed, because he is yelling outside he wants to show me XYZ, I can put the Steam Deck to sleep an be there for him. Now don't get me wrong I rarely do the last one, because I don't want to give him the impression he is less important than some plastic box etc. but when he was really occupied outside in the garden/playing in the sandbox, I sneaked in 15 minutes of casual Celeste gaming. The Steam Deck is not just a gaming PC. It's revolutionized gaming for me. Even more than the Switch did (and that one was a big jump up, too). Mostly because the games I like to play the most are available on the PC. If you read this, If you've listend to the charming guy in the video: Get a Steam Deck. Do it now. You won't regret it.

@brianleal87 I've actually tried Steam Link for over a couple of years on different devices. It's okay for a while, but it's a bit clunky to deal with for any long length of time. Streaming introduces occasional artifacts like pixelation, weird colour issues, and latency problems. When I upgraded my router it was better, but it's never 100% fullproof. It also feels a waste of power to boot up a big beefy pc in another room merely just to stream it to a smartphone in a different room. So the Steam Deck feels like much better solution for sofa and bedroom gaming. It's portable and takes away the hassle of pc gaming. For once, the operating system doesn't seem to get in the way.
@thisguy4505
@thisguy4505 8 місяців тому
You expressed exactly what the Steam Deck is: a solution to a problem. I was also in a gaming slump before getting the Deck, finding trouble in actually sitting down to play and also not wanting a Switch because of its numerous limitations and hand cramps. I knew that the Deck was exactly what I had always wanted as soon as they revealed it. If someone is already perfectly happy with their gaming setup and its place in their life, they may be disappointed with a Deck because they didn't have a problem to be solved.

What do you think of the rog Ally
@thisguy4505
@thisguy4505 8 місяців тому
@@coolcat9624 I have nothing against the rog ally, but it's not for most people. There are many inconvenient technical issues and the hardware is not as polished as the Steam Deck. The Ally is very much a "portable pc", for all the good and bad that comes with that. The Steam Deck is more akin to a game console with the usual artificial limitations removed. If someone is interested in pushing hardware to the max, regardless of the number off hoops you need to jump through, the Ally is a fine choice. If someone just wants to play games and doesn't want to spend a lot of time messing around with technical details, the Steam Deck is a better choice.

I can recommend playing first person games with the right trackpad being setup like a mouse. change the sensitivity settings until the edge-to-edge movement on the touchpad results in 45 degree movement, and then set trackball friction to high. This will make the trackpad incredibly precise when navigating the camera. and if you want to turn 180 degrees, you just flick from left to right. This is what I use, and I can't go back to using dual sticks in first person games anymore. This allows you to reach almost mouse level of precision with trackpad + gyro.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 8 місяців тому
Yes, a lot of Deckers are waking up to the superior precision of Trackpad + Gyro. You just have to take some time to experiment with the settings and find what works for you. I actually like to crank up sensitivity so edge-to-edge horizontal swiping almost does a 360, but lower the Vertical Scale to around 40% and also increase Smoothing. Makes it work a lot like Flick Stick, where the trackpad can do instant but accurate turns while gyro takes care of fine aim. The benefits over Flick Stick are that it's more comfortable, intuitive, and it's easier to aim vertically or do small turns. The trackpad also works great for twin-stick shooters if you set it to Mouse Region mode, which lets you map the trackpad 1-to-1 with the screen. Because of the lower position of the trackpad, you might want to switch Primary Click/Fire to the left hand and/or one of the back buttons, so you don't have to stretch your right hand as much.

@@DoubleJumpPunch I woke up to this when I got a steam controller. I really love FPS gaming with the Trackpad + Gyro combo. It feels more engaging and immersive. My default calibration for controls is setting a full swipe of the Trackpad to 180 degrees and full comfortable Gyro range to be about 90 degrees. This give me twitchy-fast response with the Trackpad and precise fine aiming with the Gyro.
@kadeestelle5268
@kadeestelle5268 6 місяців тому
That was the whole reason I sold my ROG Ally! I just can't enjoy playing FPS games on a traditional controller setup. I'm hoping I can get used to the deck's trackpad+gyro when it ships.

The separation between workspace and leisure space is quite important indeed. I also mix both spaces but try to get away from my desk when possible to play some video games or do whatever I feel like. Especially as u said with the portable aspect, I have autism and ADHD and can’t sit still to save my life and so as u said having that moving around change of scene ability helps a lot. I also really liked the little story of ur childhood with moving from house to house, stuff like that can be hard to talk about and I like the way you entwined your gaming experiences in with changing to different houses, so that I also appreciate a lot. My Deck has not only been where I do most of my gaming these days, despite having a 3080 and 5900X, but it scratches my tinkering itch. I never really thought about my desk being a "work" space or why I felt that guilt using my GAMING PC for.. gaming.. Sadly it looks like you'll have to use Desktop Mode unless you want to go through a pretty tough process, but that's not stopped me from doing some nice handheld streams to Discord or even UKposts via OBS! Good content, I immediately subbed. One thing I really appreciate is the amatuer quality of the video; not poorly done, just unconcerned with having a good backdrop full of RBG bullshit and gaming decor on unconventional shelving units.

I started playing some heavier games on the Steam Deck but I ended up really enjoying playing a few minutes of PS2 games, Tears of the kingdom, Celeste and other games like that. I bring it with me when I drive places for when I have 20-30 minute breaks and just wanna kill a little bit of time, for that kind of stuff it really hits the spot.

As a college student right now, I totally understand the separation between work/academics and gaming. I had a PC at home where I "balanced" both but ever since I moved into my dorm my laptop became my 100% academic device. No games at all not even solitaire or minesweeper and it helped me a lot to focus on my work. However, I noticed that the itch to play every end of the month kept bugging me and I was even contemplating risking my laptop's health just so I could play a 20 fps game. Luckily, I saved up a ton of money and now I was contemplating on buying a steam deck, currently watching videos to see if it is worth it.

@1:36 you just got a like and a sub just for that from me bro! I TOTALLY get it! This is why I am tasting my Steam Deck even though it is not even here yet. As someone who works, plays and records music ALL on the same desk... that is the reason I started down the Steam Deck rabbit hole and this vid just settled all my reserves. Cheers fam!

I borrowed my lil bro's deck he doesn't use much, and now I really want one. It's been alot of fun learning the ins and outs. A great benefit I noticed is being weirdly excited for OS updates. Sometimes you get like a 5% performance boost from updating, (whereas Windows updates are the total opposite haha).

Coincidentally happened to watch this on my Steam Deck, which I use as a Linux tablet more. Great device to just pick up and use, even in this way after building duel trackpad typing muscle memory and making a decent desktop layout. I still game more at my full desktop setup, where I use the SD as a controller for games that play better this way. The trackpads, capacitive stick tops and back buttons get a lot of use, with flickstick input, using it sideways as a DS and generally additional inputs. Mine's a 256GB model from Q3, so early-ish, made the waitlist deposit about a week after this went live, it's case still has the white lifting strap. It's trackpad based trackball emulation also got me to try and later fully switch to trackballs, using a drawing tablet when I need high accuracy.

just put in an order for the big storage model with anti-glare screen, I don't want to be shackled to my desk to play games or left with nothing if I go on a trip. If the thing can play FF7R at 40 fps I don't really think i'd need anything more powerful for most of my gaming needs, and the fact you can get a scuffed version of WoW Classic to work on the thing is hilarious and I can't wait to try it out.

There are 2 things I love about the Deck that aren't available elsewhere One of them is the consistency of games working under Linux, a concept that's very surprising to me, a Linux gamer! Another is the trackpads, which, as the number 1 Stream Controller fan, was an awesome addition, and it came with even more things to do. The fact that Steam input went from the only way to customize the Steam controller, to a niche controller customizer, to a very well known and appreciated way to customize the Steam Deck input, alongside all the other 1st party controllers is one of the reasons I think Valve is evolving the PC gaming scene, AGAIN!

I've owned an Ally and the Deck, and I can still safely say that the Steam Deck was the better buy for me. Other manufacturers can keep putting out more portable handhelds with better specs, but the deck just works because they really put in the time and the effort to make the software work. I had the Ally for two months and I had nothing but issues. Armoury Crate is a nightmare, and it doesn't even compare to Steam's Big Picture Mode integration on the deck, and just the QA issues that device has is crazy. The SD card is placed right next to one of the dual vents for its fans, and my SD card slot unit failed twice, and I wasn't even running heavy games that were installed on the that card. Also for the deck's price point, it really punches above its weight class for what it can do whether it's playing older games under lower wattage loads or even playing more demanding games, often times even better than the ally thanks to its OS. The customization options through Decky is really nice as well so you can really make it your own without too many compromises whatsoever. :)

Man you can tell the future! I bought my deck on Wednesday and I hope it arrives tomorrow. I randomly remembered how I played Metal Gear rising revengeance on PS3 and wondered "Can I play it on my deck?" so I looked it up and luckily it's verified. After all that I've been watching videos about the deck, videos like yours and I wanted to look for a video where I can see how Metal Gear runs on the deck. I nearly forgot about it and I just sit outside smoking a cigarette and your goofy ass just pulled out metal gear rising revengeance on your deck. I love it. Just because of this heavy rare coincidence I'll sub to your channel.

I feel you on not wanting to work and play in the same spot. The Covid lockdown turned me off PC gaming for a while because my gaming desk became my workplace... I went to Xbox then. I later dedicated a room as a work from home office (still work from home 3 days a week) and put a small desk in my livingroom for my gaming pc (I have the luck that my employer provides a dedicated work laptop so my own PC is strictly gaming), that makes PC gaming more enjoyable again. But, I also have a steam deck because there's just something cozy and enjoyable about curling up in the corner of the couch with a handheld... And no, for some reason it's not the same with a controller and looking at the TV, even though I'm in the same spot. I'm not sure why... Now it's just what I happen to be in the mood for. Sometimes I like the full fat experience of sitting at my desk with the big monitor in my face and the soundbar beneath it blasting, maybe prefer mouse and keyboard for some games... sometimes the steam deck is more what I'm enjoying.
