i think it might be a feature added for humour and optimisation, as when the ragdolls hit the skybox you can clearly see that they despawn, reducing the entity count which would help keep the game running a bit smoother.

An alternative, simple fix that avoids ragdoll issues would be to fade the model out if collided with skybox (but keep it before skybox in render z buffer); and if collided with the world, maybe change it to a blood decal, add a splash sound and maybe some particle effects

@@highrulerdiamond6717 just because AAA devs don’t do community stuff doesn’t mean it’s unique. Examples include (but are not limited to): DOOM 1993 (don’t know about anything more modern) has WADs, the satisfactory devs are planning on adding official modding tools and of course Minecraft.

@slamduncan6685 True - there are some things that are okay to have underdeveloped at different stages of game design. Procrastinating on certain things is a trap that is very easy to fall into, so my hope is that Garbaj selects the right aspects to postpone finishing. I got confidence in them!

For my projects, I like to have things separated in lists like this: "Now" for what needs to be done for my current goal/milestone, "Next" for what is not that important to accomplish that goal and "Backlog" for writing new ideas that I still need to validate or would be cool to implement some day. When I finish the current milestone, I move the items from "Next" to "Now" and I see what I would also like to implement from the "Backlog" or if I want to remove anything at all from the list.

The flying bodies mechanism is not only funny as hell, but also kinda ingenious! You give away your approximate position with every kill, so it's something players will need to strategize around.

You can proceduraly generate the sound based on weapon characteristics - ammo caliber, barrel length, ammo energy at barrel exit, etc. Just the first thing you need is to compare your SPLs (sound pressure level of gunshot sounds) to already known values (everywhere on the internet)

Um. About the “gun sfx.” I’m very invested in watching this game be built from the ground up (can’t wait for the demo!). I own many of guns (different types and calibers ranging from bolt actions, revolvers, lever actions, pump actions, and simi auto hand guns and rifles of different calibers) and have a good RØDE mic and a quiet place outdoors that I could catch some sound samples of whatever you need? Brass hitting the ground? Got it. Actions cycling? Mhm! Gun shots of 5.56, 9mm, 12ga, 7.62, .308 and the likes? Yup! Edit: no. I wouldn’t charge a cent. I go shooting every weekend. I’d just have to bring a laptop and a mic with me lol. Edit 2: I can get reloading sounds of all of these as well! Anything else, just ask! I’m sure I forgot some stuff here. 😅

Needing to find ammo affecting the gameplay completely depends on the type of game, for example games like Tarkov ammo is a very important resource but in games like battlefield I rarely deplete all of my ammo before either dying or just getting more ammo.

Another way you could avoid ragdoll difficulties is to just make the ragdoll have no collision with the environment - so when you kill them, you blast them in a big arc through the walls and floor! Perhaps you could even calculate where they went through and carve a Wile E Coyote style silhouette through the surface. Like superheroes punching each other through walls!

Fixing a full release later is completely different than fixing a demo later. That's the point of demos, find issues, get feedback, then go to work on what you learned

i think you should implement the limited ammo mechanic in the demo, to make it work as a minimal viable product. otherwise it wont be as interesting with unlimited ammo

But it's not meant to be a product, it's just a demo and nothing more than that. I feel like with a lot of developers releasing early access copies of their games a few weeks prior to the full release we got used to the idea that the early access or beta or whatever is basically the full game with a few bugs yet to fix, but it doesn't have to and shouldn't be that way. A demo is just a demo, to try some of the key mechanics and get a very rough idea of the game

@@ergohash2517 We don’t have godmode. It’s just unlimited ammo, not unlimited health. All the demo is supposed to do is give us a small feel of the game. As he said, the final product is going to be much more developed than this early demo.

@@ergohash2517 Giving feedback on balance isn't what a demo is meant for, that's more for betas, maybe alphas and early access builds. The tech demo shouldn't be anything more than a sneak peek at the core mechanics of what the game will be. The final product needs to be very different than the tech demo

For the gun animation I have an idea to make the sway. You can make the sway customizable by adding factors like gun weight and comfortable-ness. You can make a script and just edit the values for each gun and boom And btw That means u should use procedural animations

for ammo pick ups, you could try making a simple ammo box, maybe akin to the medium ammo box from team fortress 2, and change the decal or colour depending on the ammo type (maybe make the box more yellow for pistol and smg bullets and make it more orange or red for bigger bullets?)

Make sure to make a to-do list and then rearrange it to an order you think makes the most sense for how you develop, for me it's small goals like adding a new item or fixing something that went wrong with a few additional goals beyond them just in case I complete them before whatever my self imposed deadline is, toy around and you'll figure out the system that works for you! :) If you do ever get around to making a second demo that will focus more on the gameplay loop and stuff do make sure to make the ammo crates and stuff but don't be afraid to also have an infinite ammo version and see how that feels to play in comparison as well, could be some real interesting feedback revolving around x vs y and such.

As a game dev, my best advice is focus on getting the gameplay just right. First focus on making first and foremost a thing that's fun to play AND that provides something new, something unique to your game. A reason for people to choose your game over CoD or Rainbow Six Siege or Ready or Not or whatever. All of the minutia of sounds and animations can come AFTER you've nailed the gameplay aspects.

A quick way to vary each weapon animation is by multiplying the weight of it with a curve. Each curve can be created relatively quickly. I'm not sure if GODOT has a built in curve data type, but it could be helpful. Just a thought :)

you can get alot of mileage out of messing with the pitch, speed, and volume of a gunshot sound; generally louder/deeper makes it sound like a bigger gun, with softer/higher fits smaller guns better. the speed of the clip can make it sound more or less snappy which doesn't really correspond in as tangible of a way, but playing with it by ear can give you a little extra variety out of the same sound files. these values can be adjusted using code, at least in unity 3d so presumably godot has a similar feature.

for a reload anim, you could make a mag go up and give it physics (with the gun down and out of view) so you know thats the reload button

as long as you pick the right things and set a specific time (like after releasing the demo) to be "later" and sstop doing it after that point it sounds good to me! its easy to fall into the trap of "later" never happening though, so be careful

I am using this "I'll fix it later" feature quite a lot in my prototype. In fact, I am taking it one step further and doing a feature called "I'll add it later". In my feature, I do not add any extra minor or major feature unless and until either it's needed or base functionality is working.

I honestly agree with everything but at 1:10 ... That mechanic seems like something you'd want to test because it'd be integral to the core gameplay loop, making sure it still feels fine and flows well when you have to find ammo in the world. Other than that though I love this philosophy lol. The game looks great!
