On December 9th, 2020, SpaceX conducted a test of their Starship SN8 prototype in Boca Chica, Texas outside of Brownsville. Despite very low expectations, it successfully lifted off, completed 2 planned engine shutdowns and reached its planned apogee of 12.5km.
Then it shut down its engine and belly-flopped back to the landing pad, successfully relit 2 of its engines, and performed a bellyflop to tail-down maneuver, before losing pressure in the fuel header tank, causing it to lose its engines and crash down faster than survivable, although right on target.
This was shot from nearby South Padre Island along with Cosmic Perspective (Ryan Chylinski and Maryliz Bender), Spadre (Gene and Rachel Gore).

SN8 will never be equalled in its particular territory. I watched the 60's Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo tests with Walter Cronkite, month after month. This is the prototype of the first true interplanetary space-ship in history and I've lived to see that day, and it won't matter if the following SNx's outclass it. Even the explosion is a tribute to the spirit of Goddard: accidents are part of the fun. We know very well by now that SpaceX is good at landing on a dime.

People seem to forget that in the early days of spaceflight, the rockets didn't even get off the ground before they exploded. The fact that SN8 even got off the ground is in itself a major victory. It completing all of its flight objectives except for sticking the landing was just the cherry on top. And don't worry about your screaming in excitement. I clicked on the video specifically to see your reaction. I was excited too. ;)

Well, I FINALLY saw this flight from an “overview” perspective. It showed just HOW GREAT this flight was: the slow lift-off, the engine shut-downs, the “belly-flop” glide, and ESPECIALLY the “flip back to vertical”. Watching all the zoomed-in videos, you can’t really appreciate all that Starship accomplished. Most of the video, it’s just hanging there.
