Just getting something like this off the ground and reaching the "product in the hands of end users" phase was a pretty major feat - companies nowadays _really don't like_ "power to the people" in any form, so a fully customizable lappy with no fixed ties to any specific component mfr. means no exclusivity for partners which in turn means a much harder process to even _get_ partners. This round of new product announcements may have taken _10-20 years_ to reach. I can cut a CEO slack about having to be tight-lipped given the most likely circumstances.

I thought this was a roast and a letter to someone that cared to replace the mistake they made, from the title and thumbnail, well i was baited, but in the bad way this time, could not bring myself to watch it even if it was constantly recommended to me for about a day now, i initially said too much negativity lately, but decided to take my heart and see if the youtube knows something i don't, and it did, i am glad i watched this video, but i am still not in need of such product yet, what i want is a dual os steam deck of Android and Steam OS, so i can play mobile games and low demanding steam games, also wishing it had a strong 4G only antena that has digital and physical SIM compatibility. Looking at ebay and availability of all the parts I need to rebuild my current thinkpad, I think Lenovo is a ahead of them in this regard. :D I mean, they supply full fucking system data sheet and repair manuals with thinkpads and at least my gaming laptop which is an ideapad. The system isn't opensource, but uhm. I'm not sure what all the fuzz is about here when literally how Lenovo is doing this with ThinkPads is the most economically viable way to sell to both technologically proficient users and customers operating large fleets that have no interest in fixing the system themselves but want a new one as fast as possible and the old one going back for a refurb for a discount in the on-site delivery guarantee of the failed system... I do understand the point of open sourcing these things. But, then again you can literally flash a core boot firmware into an ever growing number of both intel an amd Lenovo ThinkPads. Lenovo supporting the open source UEFI firmware thing as well. And gives good Linux support with ThinkPads already. I think Framework maybe over engineering this and are going to sink not swim. System76 on the otherhand seems to have its shit together with not going into making everything replaceable in some fantasy world, where this is somehow desirable to anyone but a tech enthusiast infected by the "green-shift" psychosis...

I was going to make a joke about it ACTUALLY being a game changer. Playing a FPS? throw out the numpad and just use the keyboard, playing a flight sim or something similar that has a lot of controls? pop in the numpad. You might actually be changing the keyboard around when you change games. Then I wondered something. Could they make a fighting controller thing? Playing Street fighter or similar game? Take off the whole keyboard and plop on a fighting controller with the buttons and a joystick (screwable, so you could detach it, leave the rest of the module and close down the laptop and take them with you. It might be something that's too niche for Framework as a company to do, but I could easily see the community coming up with it. Hell speaking of the flight sim I mentioned before, can you imagine people making a whole cockpit module with this thing? With slides and buttons and knobs. Obviously there is not a lot of space to do these things while still being able to close the lid, but again I could see the community coming out with a special case that gives you more depth where the "keys" are. Yeah, the laptop would get bulky, but it's modular so who the hell cares, when you decide you want to chill out and no longer play flight sim every day just put it back in a normal case and use it as a regular laptop. The options for this are just crazy.

for long travel and when you can't recharge easily, a swappable battery module is awesome, cause you can have as many as you like and not run out of battery for a few days. or use one with a solar, wind or watermill charger while you use the other inside a cabin.

@@satibel yeah it is but aside from that, the fact that you can add separate battery inside your laptop and increase the duration of you laptop already its amazing enough itself. Especially when you also combine it with Linux you basically get a laptop that never ends out of charge.

If they really do make swappable batteries available (preferably at least 2, and hot-swappable), then they should follow that up with a ruggedized case. Fieldwork-friendly laptops (thinking about it, "Fieldwork" is probably the right product name for that) with customer-customizable ports would definitely sell.

I wanna say that this thing feels like catharsis for me. About 10 years ago, in a dutch magazene called "cr@sh" i believe (before disney bought them out), there as an ad for a google phone that was completely modular, using magnets to swap out pieces as needed. Needless to say: It never saw the light of day. This feels like the spiritual successor to that phone, and i ADORE it. I might wanna save up to actually get one, even though i dont use laptops at all. I really wanna see stuff like this succeed and evolve into something bigger and better. In a world where everything is so mass produced and stale, even a small bit of personalisation goes a LONG way. I even hope they go into the phone market just so 10 year old me gets the phone he always dreamed of, though that might not happen for a while. A man can dream though, a man can dream...
