Looks good, fitted quite a few of the BG outdoor sockets and this looks like an improvement.. I always silicone the top and sides of the socket between the socket and wall, not the bottom side as helps not allowing water to go down the back and any water that does can come out the bottom..

Steve, good tip there, if subject to running water down the wall i too do this. And yeah, this new model is a VERY DEFINITE improvement mate, the clips for the cover are better designed, more pliable, and you no longer need a rubber mallet or a superhero nearby to close the clips!

Nice touch with the brick dust 👍 , not sure about the drain off hole as we know water will always find a way in . And does it not compromise the IP rating Nes Pah . Fantastic video as always Gaz.

Doesn’t drilling the drain hole ruin the IP rating and provide a sanctuary for many many insects? An M12 or M20 breather valve allows for pressure compensation whilst maintaining the IP rating Personally I prefer the Click outdoor sockets as the mounting holes aren’t part of the main enclosure, and use stainless steel screws to mount them (selection and erection, external influences etc.)

I currently have a length of twin and earth running from a dedicated switch just inside my back door out to an external light. There is a double socket next to this switch that is connected to it by a few inches of cable inside the wall. If I wanted to use this existing length of twin and earth for an exterior socket, instead of the outside light (ie cut it just outside the wall and connect up as shown in this excellent video) would that work ok? Obviously I realise I'd lose the light but an outdoor socket would be much more useful anyway, especially as some more decorative lights can be used in this way. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I too have recently installed the BG outdoor socket as per the video, but what was disappointing with the knockouts around the sides of the back box that are ever so easily just push out rendering the IP rating "0" The fact that this is so easy reduces its robustness in service.

Click external sockets are far superior. Fixing holes are not located inside and a substantial rubber back plate seals the unit against the brick work. No need for silicone. Wouldn’t consider using any other make.

Never use silicone sealant! You are better off using a polymer based sealent/glue. That has a better grip on the wall than silicone sealant. And it is also better to use dome head screws with a flat bottom as supposed to flat headed counter sink screws that you can pull thru the plastic housing. They also don't allow you to make small adjustments when mounting that a dome head screws do.
@gadgetman36
@gadgetman36 Рік тому
I really like your videos Gary. However, I never fit outdoor sockets with screw holes in the wiring cavity. Despite all precautions they are 4 unnecessary points of water ingress which undermine the IP rating. They should be in the 4 corners to isolate them from the wiring cavity. Also, use of a proper cable entry grommet makes silicone sealant unnecessary.

If it's ip68 it should not need a drain hole.The fact that they included in design suggests it not up to standard. Also I would not install this in a front drive as could be used by an electric vehicle and could fail due to Chinese manufacture qaulity.
