Cause marked prices vary from region to region, person to person etc. And not what the focus is. I see US marked have shortage of something, while i can easy find it here in Norway etc. Same when none in US could get GPUs back in the crypto boom, i found alot of GPUs in Europe to build my miners. Sure markeds in Europe was effected aswell, but they were not as crazy as the US/North American marked.

Currently have a Ryzen 2600 in my build and chose to upgrade to a 5800x3D rather than build a DDR5 rig. All of my work and general use is done on my iMac, so the 5800x3D has been an amazing performance boost for gaming. Especially for unoptimized games like Escape from Tarkov where my FPS jumped almost 50% to 120FPS on a 3060 before I even upgraded to a RX 6800. I think I can easily squeeze another 4 years out of this rig.

Being able to buy a Socket AM5 board in 2025 is a big selling point for me. I usually don't upgrade the CPU, but I have had motherboards partially fail on me (eg audio or USB stops working). Happened on my last I7 system and I had to get a second hand refurbished motherboard. I prefer buying new. Or maybe I need PCI-E 5 slots for GPU in a couple years. I couldn't afford the motherboard with that right now, and there's no GPU's on the horizon that will need PCI-E 5. But being able to replace the MB later IF I need to is super handy, and will save having to also replace a CPU just to support a new GPU.

For me, the decision making is simple. Given my modest needs, I buy the superior product positioned in the mid-range which usually always means going with the under-dog. Sure, lots of people make fun and scoff at products they view as "budget" or for "poor people" but I personally love the feeling of owning a PC (or anything else) that performs the same as one with equivalent parts from competing brands all while costing 50%+ less. I take pride in that; I paid way less for the same result.

Basically this. You really only need what fulfills your need even if its something you can get for cheaper but performs more or less the same for your needs. For instance, I see a lot of unnecessary recommendations by people in general especially on the GPU end. Unless you're playing all the AAA games above 1080p & 60 frames, a very modest GPU can get you very far. Could say the same for CPUs as well.

well, I bought a b660 and a 12400 not terribly long ago, thinking I might buy a 13600k when they came out, which I then did do just recently. I did notice an impact while recording my video game on OBS, where with the 12400 I would experience some frame drops, but with the 13600k they are much more rare, instead of frequent it is once ever in a session. (low resolution, definitely not a graphics card issue). However, that is the only time I've so far noticed any difference, and were I not trying to record my videogame, it would have been a total waste, as otherwise things like chrome, any games I play, etc. already reached 88mph at maximum survive-able g's on the 12400. I've had 5 amd computers... 4.AM4 and 1 AM5. I've enjoyed being able to easily upgrade all of them... 1 x370, 1 x470, 1 x570 1 B550 and 1 x670e. It allows me to easily pass on my old stuff to family. My daughter has two 12 core systems. She does 3d animation. My wife has an 8 core. I have the 7950x which with the right tuning it's memory is at 59 ns latency and 93 mb/sec at 6400mhz. It boosts to 5800 mhz and consumes 200 watts max. I bought it for 635 euros (including the 19% tax). I paid that for the 5900x in 2020. I live in Europe and electricity is expensive. It's just nice to know that I can drop a new or used 5th gen into the AM4 systems when ever I need to. I may even go to the 3d cache version of the 7950x if the price is right. If I was looking for a mid-range processor I'd probably look at Intel, but at the high end the 13th generation does not interest me or even the low end. You can find a relatively cheap AM5 board now. You can can find cheaper ddr5 6000 memory. I found a x670e motherboard, 32 gigs of 6000mhz ddr5 and a 7950x for 1100 euros. I could have knocked of an extra 100 if I'd gone for a b650 motherboard.
@earthtaurus5515
@earthtaurus5515 Рік тому
That is some mighty fine tuning on the 7950X 👍🏽👍🏽. The longevity of AM4 and AM5 is why I went AMD as well for every PC I've built from last year. The in socket upgrade is amazing especially when all you need to is just update the bios on a motherboard and then hand it down. Still tuning my 7950X and i think I've got it to the perfect sweet spot (Max CPU package consumption is 160 watts with CCD 1 never exceeding 87 degrees c and CCD2 at 82 degrees c - CPU thermal limited to 80 degrees and boost limited to 5500 all core) for my use case. Considering I'm having to forgo some cooling performance of the Arctic 360 Liquid Freezer 2 due top mounting the fan due to clearance issues with the VRM heatsink over the rear I/O on the X670E crosshair (therefore pulling air through the radiator, with the other 2 fans pushing air through). If it wasn't for that little snag I could push the CPU a little higher in terms of boost. Handed down my AM4 rig (32gig b-die) to my sibling and upgraded the CPU from a 2700X to 5600X as a starter CPU. Later I'll upgrade it to a 5950X as the PC is going to be used for animation and illustration as well. The 2700X and 5600X will later be put into lower end motherboards with cheap, low end ram and handed to other family members with the CPUs voltage locked at 1.3 volts as both have been undervolted and will continue to be run undervolted for the whisper quiet performance whilst doing the basics and light gaming as my RX590 and RX480 will be handed down as well. The beauty of AM4 allows people to build high performance PC at relatively little cost if using X370. The only relative downside is that since most people ran their CPUs stock without undervolting - second hand CPUs off ebay will have stability issues if people try to undervolt them. Edit: i have to say though, for anyone using a motherboard with more the 2 m.2 sockets populated and using motherboard m.2 nvme heatsinks. There is heatsoak issues under all core work loads -especially around the CPU area on the rear of the motherboard - as that area heats up. SInce most cases have ssd mounts below this area and this is also around the area where m.2 nvmes are placed on motherboards. You will have instability issues with ssds as that area gets ridiculously warm. I have a H500m with 200mm fans as intake and I've had this issue when running VMs and gaming (this will be a non-existent issue with lower / mid range CPUs but for people who actually have workloads that hammer the cores constantly at 100% or so it will be issue). It got so bad that I had to change the placement of the ssds away from that area.

After the new year, I'll be building an editing rig for our videographer at the office. He's using the Adobe suite and a couple other applications that he is familiar with, and I find myself struggling whether or not I'm going to go intel or AMD for the CPU and whether or not I should give AMDs GPU a shot if I go AMD for the CPU. That's assuming that I don't get a Nvidia quadro GPU. The budget should be ~$3,000. The user is insisting that he has 64GB of RAM minimum. While I find myself wanting to give AMD a shot for this rig, I'm not sure if I would trust a stability of an all AMD rig using the Adobe suite.

Another advantage for AMD on AM5 is the gaming performance on the Ryzen 5 and 7 being very similar to that of the flagship Ryzen 9, meaning you don't have to go for the top of the product stack if all you are interested in is the best gaming performance. Whereas Intel typically segments their stack with noticeable deltas in single core / lightly-threaded workload performance. It seems wasteful to me, gaming on a productivity monster, when all I really need is 6 or 8 cores... but I also want the best possible gaming experience. In the past that meant buying an i9, but now I can have that on an 7600X or 7700X.

Yeah... especially if you're looking for a AM5 board that doesn't use GPU lanes for M.2 sockets... 🤬. I had to go for a X670E Crosshair as the M.2 lanes were not being taken from the GPU. My major gripe I have with this board is there is no rear heatsink on the third m.2 socket. I have three m.2s installed and the third m.2 increases the overal temps on the other m.2s with the rear heatsink. These two are PCI-E 4.0 drives and the third is PCI-E 3.0. Also if anyone runs 3 or more M.2s be prepared to move rear mounted ssds as there is massive heatsoak issues at 95 degrees / constant all core loads. This will apply to Intel too on constant all core loads. I have had to move ssds from the rear of the motherboard to the front of the case as the heatsoak was causing system instability even if the 7950X was thermal limited to 80 degrees.

I maybe wrong but I've heard if you use older gen nvme storage you can't mix and match them. So of you are running gen 4 or gen 5 (when they're available) the motherboard defaults to gen 4 speeds.

"it's still fine, if it breaks down I'll see". My I7-6700 was/is still going strong for gaming, development and anything I have thrown at it. Even VR with a 1070 gtx was quite decent. BUt it was a quite sightly box that is an eyesore. And, in comparison now, was pretty loud. I'd say if you're on a strict budget, the Ryzen 5000 series (specifically the 5600 series) is still perhaps the best bang for your buck. It's still a 6 core hyperthreaded (12 threads) processor running in a socket AM4 configuration so still very much an option, and you can find them for under $200 and lowest I've seen is $150 for a bare CPU. Pair that with a nice AMD or Nvidai graphics card and 16+GB of RAM and you have a decent mid-range gaming system, despite the CPU being now about 3-4 years old. Still a very capable, budget, CPU that you could probably install in most computers (including some OEM pre-builds) because it's only a 65W processor. That being said though, since I do graphics work (photo editing of large files) my next build I will go back to an Intel system. I build a Ryzen 5600 system because I didn't want to spend a ton of money and didn't want to invest in an expensive video card (as this was during the pandemic, so I see where AMD does fall short with the Vega 8 graphics versus the equivalent Intel Iris graphics --I believe the equivalent is the Iris Plus or Iris Xe) which seems to have a better performance overall; the photo editors I'm using BTW are more CPU based so video cards are not of that much importance to me using Photoshop, and even Adobe states that high-end graphics cards do not necessarily mean proportionally faster performance in PS and Lightroom. It will just be better than an iGpU in most cases. One thing to note about multi-core performance is that most OSes do support a large number of cores, but the software (applications/games) need to also support multiple cores (most do at least up to 4 cores these days and some can utilitize 16 or more, particularly graphics-oriented programs like CAD or Photo editing software and even some modern games) to gain any benefit when you start getting into the 12+ core counts. If an application is not coded to utilize more than say 4 cores, then that application will not run any faster on a 16 core than it would on a 4 core. Now the fact the OS can run on probably more than 4 cores may help with multi-tasking and may give the appearance of better app performance, but if you look just at the app itself, it may not be any faster. And this is something people don't realize unless they know a bit about programming. Now with some of the modern OSes it is possible to help out apps that are not fully compatible with large numbers of cores through some software and hardware technology that will let the system allocate say 4 cores but make it appear as 1 or 2 cores to an app, so thus improving performance as well (this is sort of what virtualization can do when you have a multi-core system... the hypervisor in a virtual machine / server can give the appearance of one core, or many, to the program, and acts as a barrier between software and hardware.

Right now the best low budget value builds are built with either the AMD 5600 or the Intel i3-1200f (both are amazing builds low budget builds). I've been an AMD fan boy going back to 2000, but I have to tip my cap to intels i3-1200f, which pretty much competes with the 5600 straight up for $50 less (AMD 5500, there's never a reason to use that over the i3-12100f). Right now AMD's 5600 hangs around $140 whereas intels i3-1200f has been retailing for $92 (which is literally the best value processor in the history of processors). When I've recently been building computers for friends and to sell, I've been trying to find any excuse I can to build with the 5600 and I can't find a reason to go with the 5600 over the i3-1200f. Combined with intel motherboards are giving much more value for what they offer on the lower end. Intels i3-12100f beats out the 5600 on single to 4 core performance by around 5-10% whereas AMD 5600 beats out intel on extra core performance by around 20-25%. For what most people are going to be using a computer for and even throwing gaming into the mix the i3-1200f is going to be slightly better, but significantly better when taking the price including motherboard pairing into account. Both builds are great, but AMD needs to lower it's cost if it's going to compete with the i3-1200f. I have a hatred for intel going back to their shady business practices in the early 2000's with a far inferior processor, so any bias I can reasonably come up with I'll find a way to be an amd fanboy, but not with this. Intel dropped the price of their i3-12100f to throw a major wrench in AMD's lower end processors and it kind of throws everything off. AMD's not going to play their game and is keeping their 5600 at $140, while pretending that the 5500 competes with the i3 and making that $85.

AMDs A4 socket has been around for a long time because AMD ensures their CPUs are backwards compatible for as long as they can. But not every upgrade goes smoothly. My previous gaming PC was on a Asrock B450 chip set. At the time the Ryzen 3000 series just came out and were beating Intel processors of the time like a drum. I got the Ryzen i5 3600 cpu plus a cheap AthlonGE just to flash the motherboard. The flashing completed with no issues. I popped in the 3600 and the board doesn’t post. All hardware is fine as putting back the Athon worked perfectly. I had to return the 3600 and get a 2600 which wasn’t what I wanted but it worked with no issues. It was not until 2 years later after a later bios update did I try upgrading to a R7 3700x (5000 series were still too expensive at the time). It works though it takes about 30 seconds to post (every time it starts). The faster cpu vastly improved my gaming experience over the 2500, however there were still some studdering. I recent upgraded my GPU from a Radeon 5700 XT to Radeon 6800 XT. The performance increase was vast but still some of that studdering issues here and there. I figured it could be a cpu limitation again but with my wonky Asrock B450 board who can say it would have issues with a 5900x or 5950x CPU. I was going to change my motherboard anyways so if that is the case why not give Intel a chance. DDR 5 motherboards are still expensive and so are the memory. Really High speed memory really don’t make much of a difference for gaming right now, unless using an IGPU like on AMDs 6900HX systems. I went Intel as i bought an Asrock z790 board with DDR 4 memory support. The CPU I chose was an Intel I7 13700K as I wanted 12900K performance at mid range prices. The 13600K wouldn’t have been that much of an Improvement over the 3700x previously had. The new intel system just makes games so silky smooth. I got 8000 point increase on fire strike benchmark (demo version of 3D mark) vs old system. The only thing is Intel cpu can be a power hog. It can go as high as 253 watts by default and much higher by those who OC. Combine that with a 300 watt GPU. That’s 600 watts. I have measured a max of 611 watts on my new rig vs 450 on my old rig. The Intel processors will also need a 240MM AIO or better. If using air cooling only the largest heat sink and fans will work. The AMD CPUs have a lower TDP of 105 watts save the 7950x at 170 watts. But they too can go higher than that. My 3700x has TDP of 65 watts and I have seen it go as high as 85 watts in games. Still lower than the average of 157 watts the 13700k draws. Still I am happy with my intel build.

Interesting. I am on a 6700k/3070 and seeing the 5000 series price drop and low TDP, it's very tempting to upgrade to AMD. I did consider Intel again but then saw all their CPUs are very high TDP. I could still do it but would prefer Intel to be more efficient while delivering performance.

Two weeks ago bought r9 7950x for 560eur + asrock b650e pg riptide wifi for 250eur and crucial 2x16gb 4800mhz cl40 ram kit for 115eur, because couldnt find any info how ram speed effects gaming performance, found only german review who mentioned that it doesnt matter and i couldn't find reason to pay more than 3x for 6000mhz ram kit for no gain, only gain is on AIDA64, i just tuned crucial kit to 5200MHZ CL34 It handled it at same 1.1v. Main problem i ran into is that asrock board either you use cheap or expensive motherboard when you turn on xmp or expo boottimes is extremely slow, if i use default its like 5s, if i use xmp or tune it myself its like 30s+, from reddit post its known issue and yet agesa update which came week ago didnt help. My 7950x can do negative offset of -30 on all cores, tested blender, cinebench torcher test for hour and played warzone 2 using my RTX 3080 for 12h straight, no crash. Ran into issue day one because my old assassin III didnt had correct mount, they can send it but i need to wait month to arrive it, used backup deepcool beta 200 st cheap 10eur am3 cooler and i only lost 10% in sintetics, in gaming performance was the same compared to AG620 BK ARGB i bought couple days later with proper mount, KEEP IN MIND on ZEN 4 backplate doesnt come off like on previous zen cpus, if you have older cooler with own backplate it wont fit, you need to take out whole bracket which holds cpu itself. SO AM4/AM5 has a catch.

@@rickwhittaker2525 I struggle to get memory past 5800 on 7950X and it's rated 6400. Have it at 5600 now because memory tests show 0 errors with that,. Using DOCP (XMP) @6400 is a guaranteed crash or failure to boot. Might just be bad luck in the silicon lottery. As a zen 2 3600 and zen 3 5800x previous owner, i can say zen 2 loved ram most, zen 3 barely, and 5800x3D burried need for good ram, because of 3D vcache, there is no video comparing performance of zen 4 ram speed performance difference in gaming, you can only find plenty intel videos, and intel loves ram a lot, and i only found out myself from my kit, that it only made difference in score in AIDA64 and thats its. 6000mhz cl32 kit here goes for near 300eur, don't see need to pay 3x for memory to see some small difference if any at all.

Gordon, those Z790 Motherboards, beyond the intro level boards can get very pricey at the mid--range on up motherboards. Very true, but AMD AM5 boards were flagship releases first. Not that they're overly expensive, pretty comperable, just only high end. Which for me is more than fine, as I wanted/got the ASUS Prime version which ive done forever now. Not saying options arent expensive, just only high end.

New Z670 and Z790 along with X670 and X670E motherboards have left many mainsrteam users looking for new motherboards that allow useable PCIe slots to port our older and still very useful PCIe cards over to, The newest Intel Z and AMD X platforms supplying 24/28 PCIe Lanes at the same time more than half are wasted USB capabilities or Gen 5 PCIe 4X NVMe M.2. Remember there are only 24 usable lanes supplied by the latest processors, a GPU uses 16 Lanes on one PCIe X16 slot, leaves 8 Lanes for essentially 2 PCIe NVMe's and yes there is an additional 20 lanes split between 2 chipsets but those still won't account for all the options allotted on one motherboard. We can't use everything on these Motherboards without cutting the expensive GPU videocard lanes in half to 8X or worse dow to 4X. I hope as a subscriber, PCWorld would share their imput on this.
