Hi everyone! I think this video is pretty comprehensive on the topic of Googleyness. I know this topic is super confusing, so I hope this video helps! Please let me know in the comments if you would like me to do a videos focused on GCA, RRK, and Leadership, Google's other three focus areas. Thanks!

great interviewing for googleyness but I have a question about positivity. it seems kinda scary the way you describe it. Because it seems like that can create a culture of false positivity. It's actually detrimental to mental health when a person is stressed and troubled to not be able to express that. Also when we trade words like problems to opportunities, it is very troubling to me because now we lose what the original idea is. Indicating something is a problem indicates that it's need of focus and urgency to it. An opportunity makes it seem not urgent and something that can be ignored. And if it is recognized that people are just changing up the word problem to opportunity, then the same idea still comes across and now the changing of those words don't inspire positivity, but even more negative feelings because now this facade adds another barrier between the interpersonal interactions.

I do agree with this post to a certain extent. I don't think it's mentally healthy to promote false positivity at the workplace just to look professional and fit in. But I think the key message in this video is more about positive mindset than positive words. Having a positive mindset allows you to see that there can be a silver lining in any situation. The important thing isn't to avoid using words like "problem" or "mistake", but to not be hung up on them, accepting the negatives and thinking of ways to make the best out of the situation. When you start thinking this way about life in general, it naturally promotes a healthier mindset and gives you a more positive outlook on life. So basically it sounds like Google wants healthy minded people :)

Requiem for a Meme, so I love this way of looking at the question, sometimes our original thought is critical to showing our problem solving skills. A great question to this question is, can you tell me what year it is, is it this year, last year during COVID, or 1776? An important item for these estimation questions is edge cases and we literally lived through one last year and continue to live through one this year. We would also definitely want to clarify the country, what type of airplane, all airplanes, private jets, military planes, etc.

@@jeffhsipepi The company I'm working at is in the "next phase", consolidating legacy stacks into a marketplace-type product. And this is my first question whenever scoping something for a client, or working on an understandably tough QoS -- e.g. our talented engineers are often the ones who've been with the company(s) long enough to know old codebases, often multiple refactors ago in comparison to new hires. IMHO, allocating enough resources to confidently support legacy stacks while maintaining an aggressive roadmap is paramount -- though, I do work with binary logs and not so "sexy" products, so I try not to come across as the stody old dinosaur in the room (despite being the youngest in the room). 😅 My first answer to this question is usually... Hi Jeff, I came across your amazing and super helpful channel today. I am based in India, and interviewed for a role at Google about four months back. The recruiter informed me that the feedback has been positive and asked me about salary expectations as well. All this was 3.5 months back, and since then I haven't heard anything. The recruiter has been really kind and is responding to my queries, saying that the position is still open, but is not able to give me a time on when I can expect to hear back. How long can it take for Google to finalise the candidate? Would be really grateful to get any input on this. Thanks a lot.

Deepika, this is a really interesting scenario. I think it's time to ask for a little more clarity from your Recruiter. Am I still be considered? What is holding you/team from moving forward, is it my interview feedback? Is it common for candidates to stay in process for this amount of time without moving forward/being rejected. Simply state that since you are outside the organization, you are trying to get more clarity on your situation. And I recommend trying to get a competing offer to see if this makes them move or not.

All negative moments can be treated as opportunities if learn from them and try to improve. I hope this helps!

What I mean is, even if someone's rude, you respond but, maybe ask them or bring it up to a manager, that they could be nicer. Ignoring a problem because it was called a problem? That's really bizarre and seems cult-like, quite frankly. If someone can't handle the word "problem", I mean... that's not normal; they need to see a therapist or something. Seriously. Maybe you were just making an example and I'm taking it too literally.

@@heh2k I appreciate your comments, we want to recognize situations for what they are, as an opportunity to learn and grow. So this is more of a philosophical item than a Google item. I hope this helps.

I thought it very concerning that on one hand you let interviewers know that being political in any response could be detrimental to their chances of getting hired but then state that Google is a very liberal company. Did no one else pick up on this? So it is OK for google to express how liberal they are but the rest of us have to be quiet about it. If Google were an all inclusive company they should welcome all walks of life AND political views and commentary no matter the platform, even during the interview process.
