Hello guys, Welcome to another episode of “Learn technology in 5 minutes” by Makerdemy.
In this video, you will learn about a wireless technology called Zigbee.
Before getting into the video, I am sure that you are familiar with short-range wireless networking technologies like wifi and Bluetooth which are used to connect devices. These technologies are fairly mainstream today and are used in specific use cases. For example, if you want to stream audio you are likely to use Bluetooth. Likewise, if you are streaming video or large files, you are likely to use WiFi. But, let us think of a use case where we have to connect a large number of battery-operated devices. Is it ok to operate them using Wifi or Bluetooth?
The answer is clearly NO. Wifi consumes a lot of power and is therefore not ideal for battery-operated devices. Most of the WiFi devices like your mobile phones or your laptop are usually charged on a daily basis.
Then what about Bluetooth? you may say well, Bluetooth consumes less power than wifi so would that not be ideal for our use case? But, You can connect only a limited number of devices to a Bluetooth network and therefore BlueTooth is not ideal for our use case as well.
So, what could be a better solution to connect a large number of battery-operated devices?. Enter Zigbee
But what exactly is this term Zigbee?
Zigbee, like Wifi and Bluetooth, is a short-range wireless protocol. The Zigbee is built on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 physical layer and is designed to meet the needs of low-cost battery-operated applications where Longer battery life is of the major concern.
It also operates in the 2.4 GHz band spectrum where wifi and Bluetooth operate.
Unlike the other two technologies, Zigbee operates at a very low data rate of 250kbps. And this is the tradeoff we need to live with when we are optimizing for a low power network protocol that can connect many devices.
A single Zigbee enabled device can reach up to a range of 10-20 meters (indoors) in search of another Zigbee device present in the network.
The Zigbee operates in a mesh topology, which helps the Zigbee device to transfer its message to its destination via a number of intermediate Zigbee devices connected within the network.
So what is Mesh topology? Don't wifi and Bluetooth follow this?
Well in a basic sense, topology can be termed as a way in which devices are connected to each other.
In mesh topology, there is a coordinator that sends the information, an intermediate device which carries forward this information and an end device which receives the information. All the devices in this topology expect the end devices can communicate with each other and also able to change the paths to deliver the information if any disturbance occurs in the network.
Whereas, In star topology, there are no intermediate devices and the communication is done directly between the Coordinator and the end device. This disables the chance of establishing an alternate path to transfer information at the time of failures. Wifi and Bluetooth are configured as Star networks.
There are 2 advantages to using a mesh network. First, a mesh network increases the system reliability. Second, because of the way data transmission happens in a mesh network, the short-range of individual Zigbee devices stops being a problem. We can add a large number of Zigbee devices which need to transmit data just to the neighboring node. This way, very large networks can be built based on Zigbee. In fact, the Swedish city of Gothenburg is a giant Zigbee network, where over 250,000 homes are connected together for the purpose of remote energy metering.
Coming to the security associated with Zigbee, it uses a 128bit AES algorithm to encrypt and authenticate the message signals via the links which are secured by special keys allowing the end-user to use the devices in a secure manner.
So, where do you think Zigbee is being used? It is extensively used in Smart Homes to remotely access electronics and also in Smart metering

what different with remote rf 433mhz???..this remote rf is low power consumption n price is very cheap
@MAKERDEMY
@MAKERDEMY 4 роки тому
Hi Ahmad, It depends on the Application you are trying to build. If it just a simple project, that needs to send data over the air, without the intention for scalability, security, interoperability & reliability, then you can use the RF433 Modules. On the other hand if you are trying to build a true IoT System that need to be build across a lot of nodes, ZigBee can support more than 60000 nodes in a single network, through its Mesh Topology. Also for mission critical application, where fast and reliable data transfer is a must, ZigBee provides as low as 30ms response time with proper acknowledgment messages, to ensure that the data has reached its destination, whereas the RF433 doesn't have that feature. Moreover, ZigBee supports Full Duplex Communication that too encrypted by 128 bit AES, which is lacking in the RF. Furthermore, unlike what you have said RF433 doesn't take less power than ZigBee. It all depends on the number of packets being sent, and the polling frequency. You can refer this paper to see the graphs of power consumption. www.researchgate.net/figure/Energy-Consumption-per-Week-for-RF433-ZigBee-Bluetooth-Wi-Fi-Using-Communication_fig2_311841905 .We hope this was helpful. What's the difference between RS485, Modbus, Zigbee and MQTT and how they work together in general?
@MAKERDEMY
@MAKERDEMY Рік тому
Hi Ricky. It is very difficult to explain all the protocols mentioned and give the differences between them in a response to a single query. We have tried our best to explain and differentiate between all in brief. RS-485 is responsible for point-to-point communication between the electrical devices. It can work for long distances by using long cables and it supports multiple devices on the same bus. Modbus is a serial communication used with PLCs. It is a method used to transmit information over serial lines between devices. Modbus is a protocol type whereas RS-485 defines protocol’s signal level. MQTT is a messaging protocol on top of TCP/IP used for sending messages. Zigbee carries a small amount of data over a short distance and consumes very little power. Zigbee and MQTT integrate well and Zigbee2MQTT is used in many home automation

Why not use BLE Mesh, you can operate devices from mobile also
@MAKERDEMY
@MAKERDEMY 2 роки тому
HI. Yes BLE mesh can also be used. Choosing a methodology depends on the application, needs, budgets, speed, reliability, etc. For example if your devices are battery dependent Zigbee may be considered as a better choice, on the other hand if you have a larger IoT based network for industrial applications BLE mesh may be considered as a better choice.

What about Bluetooth low energy? I see it overpowering zigbee in terms of smartphone related use cases
@MAKERDEMY
@MAKERDEMY Рік тому
Hi Smit Zaveri BLE has been around for a long time, and latest updates looks really like permission for upto 100m real life range applications. Currently as most Smartphones ship with BLE already, it has the most impact as of now. But reliability and range is far superior with ZigBee. Moreover industry giants like Amazon, Google, Samsung etc have joined hands to make ZigBee the standard for indoor IoT by forming the Matter Alliance. Most of these smart home devices come with gateway bridges that can convert BLE connections to ZigBee. We hope this was helpful. Thank You, MAKERDEMY SUPPORT TEAM
