Hello! It's been an exciting month at the Cosy Cotswolds, work has begun! We've been building some wacky things for the interior of my shepherd hut cabin and getting the Tiny House ready, for a HUGE move...
Welcome to the channel of a bumbling Englishman who is trying to learn how to build mad cabins In an attempt to start a tourism business in the Cotswolds of the UK. So, subscribe and stick around because I have absolutely no idea what I will make, or what will happen 😂

There was a company out of Sweden that had these composting toilets that were self contained (but not small) and they incorporated worms, the tank was divided into quarters, and you periodically turned the unit's guts inside and by the time a full rotation had gone around, what you were left with was earth. You took that out filtered out the worms, threw them back in to keep working. Now this type of unit was scalable, they had units for a home, units for apartments and units for businesses. That might not be that bad. AND we like weird Jacob, he's very fun to watch and to listen, it makes Sunday morning start off like Muddy getting the zoomies.

I love how scuffed the bookshelf portion was! In regards to the compost toilet, it definitely depends on the model. I'm personally uncomfortable with models that are just a seat over a tray of pellets or chips with no separation, but I know people are completely okay with those. For an in-the-woods experience in a tiny house, I wouldn't be surprised about a compost toilet so imo a "real" toilet would be a luxury item.

Thanks for the opinion! I think perhaps if I did go compost, I would get a separator and one that felt like a real toilet

Hey JH, just use the cheap method. Build a box, put a bucket in it DO NOT FORGET A SMALL TRASH BAG IN IT,, put a toilet lid on it, have a chamber with sawdust chips, can use pet cedar chips from the store if you do not have any, put a toilet paper holder on wall or put in on the little box that you made for the bucket. only cost -- wood for box, a bucket, toilet lid, trash bags, cedar chips (FREE or cost?) roll holder............... DONE!! Good luck sweetheart, Chris from Missouri

As much as I love watching your videos I feel like I'm living in a loop seeing the shelves for the 3rd time in a row. I will keep watching (whilst skipping the parts I've already seen) but it just feels like you're trying to add more time to the videos by repeating previous footage. I hate myself for posting this as I don't want to be a negative nancy, but just giving my 2 cents of feedback. You do you, ofc! I'll still be here watching the videos.

No don’t apologise this is a useful comment! I was trying to create a round up of all the work completed as not everyone had seen the individual videos. Also I thought it would be a nice repeatable video to do every month. I’m trying to post once a week but perhaps you guys would prefer less posts for better videos? I might post on the community tab and see what people think, thanks again 👍

I feel like most people would prefer flushable toilets because a vacation indicates not having to worry about restrictions, however with the environmental bent your cabins can skew towards people who are fine with compostable toilets.

ADORE your weirdness! Please keep at it. Muddy will help make sure the chaos stays real. Re the toilet sitch, coming to your place I wouldn't expect a flush toilet unless I was city-folk, and probably then I wouldn't even go out in the woods. I'd define your audience, like a writer. Who do you want using your space? (Please don't say people with lots of money, because you'll be right back on the hamster wheel you've so fortuitously and laboriously escaped!) Cater to the people you'd like to see out there, who are probably like you. Personally, if I were to visit, I'd be looking forward to an eco-friendly (and reasonably priced) compost toilet to check out how that works and how you set it up. Also, my opinion is that the Tree Shelf is a work of art that happens to hold things in vertical-ish positions. :)

BLT composting toilet looked good. Not in the position to have one at the moment, personally, but speaking as one of your future punters who is watching with great interest, being able to see a different range of solutions in use would help me (and others) make up our minds as to the solutions we’re going to use when we’re finally building our tiny homes.

I have used composting toilets while on holiday in eco friendly sites of various budget levels here in Australia. I'm not bothered as long as they're well maintained and don't smell very strongly. An example of one I've used requires some sawdust to be tossed in after your business, and gets emptied out by a company every six months or so. Running water, however, is a must for showers and cooking

I have idea regarding your toilet situation. What about making 1 structure with individual toilet and shower units? 1 unit combo for each of your tiny huts. Each unit gets a key that got to that individual tiny hut. It's only used by those people during there stay, its safe and secure to leave their bathroom items etc cause it locks. You only need to clean up after they leave, you only need 1 structure for now so you can combine waste water etc into one larger tank etc. Example if 4 tiny huts - 1 structure, with walls dividing 4 shower units, 4 toilets of some kind, 4 small sinks, 4 smaller windows for ventilation, 4 doors with locks. Visitors still have their own private restroom area. Once business grows and the cash starts flowing then you can start attaching connected one if you want to. Let me know what you think. You good at re- pursuing stuff so I'm sure another of your stuff you maybe able to get 2nd hand or something someone bought then changed there minds. Best of luck.

I'd think that as long as people are coming to what is arguably an eco-vacation in the Cotswalds and your advertising of the accomodations is very specific, people shouldn't be too upset to find a composting toilet. But ultimately, you know your budget and land restraints best...

Forget about the composting loo as I honestly don't think you will want to be the one who has to empty it, as for the people who say they don't smell. All I can say is that they must have horrible sense of smell etc if they think they don't smell plus a proper loo will be something of a luxury let alone a surprise for your guests. I can't believe that you turned the hut into a Eskimo's winter fishing hut your only missing a round hole in the floor. The one thing I feel you forgot about is the land isn't flat or even plus if you have to go through a opening between hedges or gateway your hut is way too wide to do any of that safely.

Why not start with the lesser expensive of the toilets and add a few “real” toilets as things go along?
@tomfrank9447
@tomfrank9447 Рік тому
Regarding the toilet question: Should the guests empty it themselves? If so, then I would tend towards the more expensive option, because as a guest I'm not really curious that I'm allowed to dispose of my own waste, even though I have to pay for the accommodation. The container with the urine in particular should also stink miserably when it is emptied. If you or someone else does this, you should also consider whether it is worth striving for. Well, draining cesspools costs money, but there are professionals who do it and that clearly speaks for the expensive solution. However, there is another solution and that is incineration toilets. They work with a gas connection and burn the waste, whether liquid or solid. However, the fun is not exactly cheap, because you would have to reckon with about € 4000 per toilet and about 180g of gas per burning process, which is cheaper for you. However, you do not need water, because the excrement is caught in an inserted bag and destroyed in the same way. After 70 burns you have to empty the ash pan, which is certainly more convenient than emptying a cesspool or composting toilet. I deliberately do not refer to a specific manufacturer, because there are certainly several. By the way, there are some videos on this topic here.
@JacobHarrell
@JacobHarrell Рік тому
Oh I wouldn’t expect the customers to empty it themselves no! Ah every option seems expensive, but it’s good that there are so many. Thanks for the tips mate 👍

Regarding the toilet question: I personally wouldn’t care if it doesn’t flush. However i wouldn’t be keen on smells (e.g. during a heatwave) or having to do any maintenance (emptying) myself as a guest. I also would love a good shower while there, so I think the more expensive system might be worth it. Regarding the rest of the video: I normally really enjoy your content, but I was really disappointed today. The title seems straight up click bait, we’ve already seen the only building (tree shelf) you did. You’re trying to make us watch this again as well as some of the same footage (making tea, snippets of the move) twice in this video… I skipped a lot of it and would by far prefer a shorter, more on point video next time.
