Im born an raised 10 miles from The Gap, and this song is all about my home town. PERFECT song for around here!

This guy is SO much better than ANYTHING on the radio today, shame the masses don't know....
@JammanTV7 років тому
Shame yeah. Or is it ? Ive seen him play in great small venues in London, Amsterdam and Edinburgh, once solo with acoustic guitar, and even this tour after two amazing records and grammys Im seeing him at fairly small venues in London and Paris. I wish him all the success he deserves, but I also really enjoy not having to worry about fighting for tickets and being able to stand very close to the man on stage :)
@wolfzr27 років тому
Good call. Saw him from the 3rd row last night, right in front of Derry.

Hey Wolfzr...you are so right. Started listening to him at "Southeastern", Really liked "Something more than Free" too...but this harder edge is a great sound for him. Radio is a wasteland these days...

I haven't had a singer/ songwriter since Springsteen that I loved and respected so much.
@franklinbumgartener13233 роки тому
I agree Isbell is a tremendous song writer... I can't dig the Springsteen comparison though. It's kinda like comparing Count Dracula to Count Chocula. Sure, there's similarities but one is the real deal and the other one, not so much.

Brucesince I was a little girl... Jason as I'm getting up in years. I'm a Jersey Girl who got out at 18...
@sowrong68967 років тому
Having grown up in the region he is referring to, this song speaks to me! Even more so since I am a musician and have played at the Mustang Lounge a few to many times myself. I without a doubt come from the same place musically as Jason. It seems like I have known him my whole life. I dig his Southern rock/rock side just as much as his folky, country side. This is similar to Springsteen, where as his folk stuff is similar to Dylan.
@jamieoneal71205 років тому
What's better than seeing Mr. Isbell live? Seeing him live and getting paid for it 😁. BCRS thought you rocked Asheville's socks off, sir!!!

Jason is from my hometown, so I'll share a little-known trivia. The lock down psych unit in one of the local hospitals was commonly known as the "400 Unit" (located on the fourth floor of ECM Hospital). Hence, the name of his band.
@markyexley94407 років тому
That's actually quite well known...

Shout out to Lightning 100 in Nashville for blasting Jason Isbell into the mainstream. He's a master lyricist and musician. He's rocking 6 shows at the Ryman and theyll all likely be sold out!!!

There’s an answer here, if I look hard enough. There’s a reason why I always reach for the harder stuff. Wasn’t my daddy’s way, he was down in the mines all day. I know he wanted more than mouths to feed and bills to pay. Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole. I ain’t cut out for war, unless I know what I’m fighting for. And there’s nothing here but churches, bars and grocery stores. Ain’t much money in the old-time mandolin so I cash my check and I drink ’til I’m on my ass again. Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole. Remember when we could see the mountain’s peak? The sparkle off the amphibole? Like a giant golden eagle’s beak. Now they say no one wants the coal. I thought about moving away, but what would my momma say? I’m all that she has left and I’m with her every day. Soon as the sun goes down, find my way to the Mustang Lounge. If you don’t sit facing the window, you could be in any town.

Just like the 50's when a bunch of country boys showed up a Sun Records, here is an example of a guy with a hillbilly accent that can REALLY ROCK AND ROLL!!!! You have to love a song that makes you rock and THINK at the same time. Consider the lyrics; get lost in the groove!!!

There are many out there that say that Jason 9 ly points out the plight of Minorities while completely overlooking songs like this and Last of my Kind. Mind blowing. And yes, I can tell you from experience that Cumberland and Conemaugh could be interchangeable terms.

The mustang lounge? Well he must have been through these parts to mention the Mustang in Tazewell, TN
@ryanknorrlawncare6 років тому
I just looked this up to see if it was in fact a real place, and of course I'm not surprised that Jason does his research. The attention to detail in his songs is really incredible.
@dgambrel92416 років тому
The only thing is there isn’t a grocery store in Cumberland Gap, you have to go the Iga in harrogate or middlesboro for the closest one. Everything is about it is right though.

I've been a fan since the drive by truckers and I love his music. I'm not a big fan of the reverb in his voice with his newest music. He has a fantastic voice, but I feel something is taking away from that. Jmo
@fullthrottlecaudill50417 років тому
Also, he's the greatest songwriter I've ever listened too
@machorandingo1647 років тому
i've wondered that too but i "think" it's because they are recording to analog tape. maybe using the C.L.A.S.P. but i agree the reverb is a bit much until the other instruments join in.

Cool, but not digging it as much as "Hope The High Road"... Still can't friggin' wait for the new record! Jason is a genius and it's nice to hear The 400 Unit really strutting their stuff!

Huge Isbell fan here, but I am having a tough time jumping on the train for this one. I find the musical mix kind of muddled stuck in the background. The tempo and lyrics are great but the song screams seventies to me, sorry.
@sidneybarrett8941Рік тому
This is the greatest Bruce Springsteen song that wasn't actually written by Bruce Springsteen. (That's meant as a complement, BTW.)
@aswightman6 років тому
this sounds like Matt Mays. I heard this and thought it was Matt Mays
@matt40517 років тому
Seems like there is a target sound similar to Into It Over It and the like with JI's new material. I think it really doesn't work. This song and the other new one are on the never-listen-to-again list but I still support him anyway
@jeffburke40257 років тому
You can't label his music to any particular genre. It's nowhere even close to true "indie" country either. True country is Cody Jinks, Ward Davis, etc those types. Jason's music is the complete opposite and tbh.. kinda disappointing when compared to his older stuff, But to each his own. I respect his struggle to live clean and sober tho. Just wish he would stay true to his roots and where he came from.
@jordyking5972 роки тому
i hate Jason Isabell on a moral standpoint but he makes good music.
@nickrenfroe62267 років тому

IS THIS SONG A JOJO REFERENCE?!?!
@wyattisrite51537 років тому
You can tell this was a slow song that they decided to speed up. It feels super rushed. I'm not about it.
@epiphoney27 років тому
Maybe you just don't know what an uptempo rock song sounds like.
@wyattisrite51537 років тому
I know exactly what an uptempo rock song sounds like, and I know what playing a slow song fast sounds like. This is a slow song that they decided to play fast.
@chuckuni53667 років тому
Coming from someone who has played rock or punk music for 25 years or so - no. It sounds just about right. The beat and groove is right on the edge of the seat as it should be. Perhaps that's the rush you are feeling? It's not wrong, it's exactly the opposite. I am glad to hear the energy.
