It feels strange to analyze something of Joel's heavyhandedly, but when Joel taps into subversive meta funnymode, he goes hard, and this song might be his _most devious lick yet._ From the very first to last line, it's thematically cohesive to the topic of familiarity. In all forms. Joel sings about the comfort of it. The pain. The hopes and expectations it brings. The trust it creates, both intentionally and inadvertently. And dashes. Overall, the song reflects on our absolute reliance on familiarity. Even the seemingly nonsequitor lines, in all their silliness, are evidence of familiarity's omnipotence. You can take any ol' thing in your life and apply it. Because familiar things are the only things we associate with. Consider the opening about Paul, which seems like a lolrandom line. It isn't. Joel doesn't care about the movie--he can't even remember what it was about!--but it's a movie he saw before, and he saw it with his mom; likely the most familiar person in his life. He not only wants to relive a fond memory with a deeply familiar person, but wants to experience it simply as familiar experience. This introduces the recursive oroboros qualities of familiarity, which Joel calls attention to _in the next line_ with the cyclical nature of roundabouts (or rotaries or roundables or rotaries). He then proceeds to ask if *you* want to become familiar with him, continuing the causal loop as both a snowball effect and an example of the extrinsic, inevitable web of familiarity. This whole opening verse is a *familiarity fractal.* The Ann Frank joke is an example of cross familiarity. Bieber is familiar with Anne Frank, and Bieber wishes she could be familiar with him. And Joel, who is familiar with both, wishes them to be familiar with eachother. And if you'll excuse me while I place the analogy under this atomic force microscope, I will also point out the fact that Joel is referencing a meme. "Meme" being synonymous with mass familiarity. This would seem more concidental if Joel just litered the song with viral memes, but he doesn't. He memes once. It's an example. Another line that threw me was the Jared "joke." It's an example of remote familiarity, and the inanity of it. The fact you were familiar with someone (influencer) or something (a corporation) you've never even personally interracted with, and how meaningless it is, but always in retrospect. The green suited entity represents familiarness. He/She enters inoccuous yet noticed, becomes recognizable and expected in every shot, and then he/she becomes acquainted to Joel, who becomes so familiar with this individual that he associates with them. And then identifies with them. And then he identifies *as* them; a counterpart to them... I personify the greensuit with pronouns cuz it's easier to explain that way, but greensuit represents any thing that applies. It's just a visual story about becoming extremely familiar with a person, place, object, event, or ideal, and how these are our self-identities. You could argue that it represent the danger of being obsessive? Or vulnerable? That the greensuit corrupts Joel at the end like a mental symbiote. But I think it's just conveying the same broad human condition as the song itself rather than an attempt to preach precautions. Familiar things imprint on us. It's not avoidable. Nor is it bad. But it doesn't convey a comforting self reflection. It isn't cheerful. Neither is the song. The video and song also share a parrallel in how they encourage a relationship with us. It seems funny (innocuous). Then confusing (interesting). Then meloncholic (familiar). And for one more hazzah, Joel subverts your expectations with a final word. Walk. You expected it to be "jog." The entire song had a very consistant ABCB rhyme scheme. You became familiar with it. And it changed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say this is like the best song ever written. The composition is super simple and the subject can be worked into virtually any line. But that's also a part it's beauty. What I am trying to say is that this is _objectively_ the best song ever written.

I started off thinking this song was a little too strange and disjointed and it just wasn't for me. But I kept watching and at some point, the purpose and message of this video finally clicked and by the end I was shedding tears. This is an amazingly beautiful song. One made by someone who doesn't care about looking perfect. A real human on the internet. No over-the-top jokes, no need for pace-breaking bits, and no exaggerated online persona. The sincerity in this piece is palpable. We've all been here at one point or another and this is a beautiful artistic depiction of what it feels like. There's always hope and there's always good in the world. Find what drives you and never let it go. You are loved and it's never too late to make a change for the better.

Familiarity is rarely described this way and this in-depth, yet it's something all of us experience. The fact that some memories create longing for simpler times, remind us of pain from the past, or just give us a nostalgic rush, lends themselves to more introspection than I think most people give them. I never saw Paul, and now I feel it's a bit too late, as I was too young when it came out but now I'm a bit too cynical, and my humor has changed from what I feel that movie was going for. I could be wrong, but I also feel like all these thoughts came crashing down like being buried alive by memories overflowing from a closet

Usually all of Joel's videos go insaneo style, this song was so emotional and deep that all I felt was Bunko Town. The way Joel puts on the green suit reminds me of his untimely demise when he was blown up by a mine. The green suit getting put back on him reminds me of the inevitability of death, even after Joel was revived. When I heard him say the line about Shrek a single tear rolled down the side of my face. Keep going Insaneo Style my friend, even through the Bunko Town times.
