Retired Air Force combat controller and author Dan Schilling speaks with David Hookstead about John Chapman, SEAL Team 6 and Battle of Takur Ghar.
The book tells the true story of fellow 24th STS member and Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman. Chapman was killed during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan when he was left alone on a mountaintop against enemy fighters. John fought bravely for hours by himself, and Dan breaks it all down.

I Have followed Johns story for a while now. Read Alone at Dawn. As an Infantryman for 8 years (2001-2009) and Iraq War Veteran, the fact that Britt Sablinski got the MOH that really should have been Chapmans… and YEARS went by before this ever came to Light. Its very troubling. No I was not Spec Ops. Yes I was an Infantryman, Yes I spent 12 months in combat operations in the Baghdad AO in 2005, and as Scared as I ever was, as much as there was times I wanted to just Not suit up and go out, I did it every time. I can sit here and say you NEVER leave a fallen Comrade. Period. Let alone 2 of them.. (Seals had no idea if Neil Roberts was alive either). And they Left the Mountain without Either of them. Shameful. Fucking shameful.

Britt Sablinski should have not accepted that medal. Other than they get got run out of the objective by the enemy, I do not see the reason he got it. Ok, so he led his team off the "x" and away from the objective (while leaving a live teammate alone). How is that different from what many infantry combat veterans did over and over again in countless firefights in Iraq and Afghanistan? Britt got it, simply so that the SEALs did not look like cowards in contrast to what Chapman did in the face of the enemy. Downright shameful exercise in politics.

Now let me qualify this with I am former Ranger and retired US Army from SF group ( not a SF tabed but support) . My best friend I went to HS with was Navy Seal Team 2 Mills . The Navy has screwed this up to cover up one of their own . This is why the Navy needs to clean up Devgru or what ever they call it now 10:30 . In SOF community there are several Seal 6 stories that aren’t good well known. On the other hand their is No stories of Air Force SOF guys doing anything bad their all great guys . My thoughts and opinions on this story . I will listen but makes my blood boil every time I hear this story I’m glad he finally got it . 6:56

From what I have heard was that DEVGRU were like fish out of water in the beginning of the GWOT in Afghanistan. They really didn't know what they were doing out there because they weren't trained like CAG, SF, or Ranger Battalion was in advanced infantry tactics and long term land warfare in valleys and mountains. Things have changed a lot with DEVGRU now but back then it was different.

The Air Force only cares about PJ/CCT when it comes to commercials for recruiting enlisted thrill seekers. Those career fields are not what Air Force Officers give two shits about because they only are concerned with pilots, most accurately the fighter community. Additionally, they are blissfully unaware of what the high speed units out there are doing because they have no OPCON of them.

It wasn't until Secretary of the Air Force James got involved that Chappy was even considered for the Medal of Honor. The previous Air Force leadership for 10+ years after Chappy died on Roberts Ridge did absolutely nothing to advance a MOH or even investigate whether he deserved the Medal of Honor. You are dealing with an Air Force leadership that routinely denied Bronze Stars with Valor for Combat Controllers,Pararescue (PJs) and TACPs while giving Bronze Stars to officers pulling staff / desk duty in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and on FOBs/COBs in Iraq and Afghanistan who never even were involved in any kind of combat.

So to preface, I’m a prior enlisted Army Infantry Officer. Now that I have climbed the ranks and gotten to a position that I can actually see the corruption and fucking craziness that goes on in the higher echelons of the military, it’s mind boggling. Like he was saying, people trying to thwart the CCT’s MOH. I’ve seen it first hand. Not the Medal of Honor, but other awards and commendations that were truly earned on a combat deployment. I saw us internally fight a higher headquarters for our Soldiers to get the recognition they deserved. Like he was also saying, it was no secret what they had gone through. We had literal unbiased intelligence reports, sworn statements, the whole 9, just for SEVERAL high ranking officers to refute and dismiss these events. Like for no apparent reason. Everything was written correctly and actually happened. And I know of this happening all across the Army during GWOT. It is absolutely insane to me. In this instance, ITS ON VIDEO, and they still have the fucking audacity to fight it. It is what it is. What happened, happened.

Why wouldn't the USAF want to show the world the heroes of the USAF? It's for many different reasons...one of these is because most are enlisted people. Another is because the individuals in question is NOT a PILOT. The USAF has problems highlighting their enlisted people. I also know that there are some pilots who don't get very much of a highlight for great stuff they've done...I'm pretty sure that in one case it's because he's not an ACADEMY GRAD. Lot's of things add up to some really deserving people NOT getting much notoriety in the USAF (and in other services).

Great vid, ironically I ordered the book just last night before seeing this vid today. Glad the true story of Robert’s Ridge is getting out. Brent Tucker (Delta) has a lot of interesting info on this event and others relating to questionable SEAL narratives.

How are they going to make a movie based on John Chapman's actions without destroying the image of Seal team 6? They left him and one of them got the MoH for that. Yes, absolutely 'Alone At Dawn" is a story that needs to be told, but why was Chapman alone? The answer to that is why I don't see how the DOD let's this story be told.

The word "intrepidity" is one they cut and paste into award text but, boy, did Chapman personify that description. He was an amazing fighting man when the situation required it!! Nothing but awe and respect on my part.
