This is what happens on an island 3 times bigger than Ireland BUT with 12 times the population. There is also a move from generic meat and plant produce to high end localised produce with specific protections of origin and names for such produce. Britain could never be self sufficient in food given its extremely dense population and economic structure and land use. What they could do is protect names of produce, cheese being a good example, where cheddar would have to be made in England to be called cheddar. The EU does this all the time with geographic naming of foodstuffs. Brexit probably ruins this though.
