Is history repeating itself, with America reliving the political rancor and upheaval of the late 19th-century Gilded Age? Karl Rove, political strategist and the “architect” of George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson, H. R. McMaster, and John Cochrane to discuss the impact of economics, world events, and cultural concerns on this year’s midterm vote.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

Except that in the Gilded Age America was growing rapidly, whereas now we're collapsing, possibly rapidly.

Neil is right about the DC elite bubble. They are missing a major market segment among the electorate. And would agree we should hope DeSantis picks up the torch, and Trump gets his jollies with a 3-hour radio show.

The recollection of American political history was inspired. It should serve to reassure the public that this country is indeed still functional in historic ways that can continue with success.

One must commend Niall Ferguson's awareness on the elitist underestimation of Trump (which is realistically more of an underestimation of the 'deplorables' that vote for him). For a more accurate representation of Trump's popularity and influence, I look at the success of his endorsements, of which he continues enjoys absolute domination; to my knowledge, it is a far greater record than any politically relevant individual ever. Considering I've heard Niall bring up "DeSantis is higher than Trump on the polls" multiple times, I'd like to submit the following rhetorical questions: How accurate are the polls in that claim 99% support for their "leader"? How many of these people ACTUALLY support their own oppression, when asked in private, when they won't fear retribution? Whether you like it or not, the 'Woke Brigade', despite being a numerically very small vocal minority, wields incredible influence over the culture in America today. Good people are getting guilted or emotionally manipulated in some other way into going along with things that any sane person could clearly see is wrong. Normal people just want to live their lives, free from judgment, harassment, cancellation, whatever. Convinced that they'll be socially ostracized or lose their livelihoods, regular people are just going to say "yes I support the current thing" to get belligerents off their backs. No Trump supporter honestly discusses their support for Trump or answers any poll honestly. The United States is not as free as it once was, and ideas, speech, and reasonable conversation are not as open as they once were. We might not live in such a backwards and oppressive country where 99% of us 'support' the current leader (or suffer the consequences), but we are FAR from the 100%-free mark where we can have honest and civil discussions about many of these topics. Polls tell you exactly what polls tell you. That X% of people will tell the pollster that they support Trump and Y% of people will tell the pollster that they don't support Trump. But "what you tell the pollster you vote for" is not the same as "what you vote for". There is an interesting way to circumvent this misrepresentation in polls, I saw a group do this by asking "who would your closest friends vote for", and due to their understanding of the cultural climate, they earned much more accurate results, including being one of the only groups to correctly predict the 2016 election.

Excellent. Karl Rove knowledge of congressional history is amazing. I had to rewind a couple times as I couldn't believe my ears. Imagine a Congress member sharpening their Bowie Knife on their boot heel all day in session.

53.33 I get Karl Rove's point - but JFK was hardly a 'Grunt' he commanded a series of PT boats in the Pacific theatre. He also survived the sinking of PT-109 and reduced a lot of his crew which earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Medal

I have never read a WSJ column written by Rove because I just thought he was a just a political hack. After today’s appearance, I see that I should take him seriously and read his column’s. His comments contained a historical perspective that our current dysfunctional politics have many precedents, which we have overcome and will continue to do. As to his limited use of Latin (sui generis), not so good.

I think of the two party system as a pendulum swinging left & right with the help of gravity/voters. If cheating is rampant it gets nasty. On a side note, why are the military troops being told to apply for food stamps.Big government isn't capable of running everything well. The private sector is key to American Relevance.

Retired USN veteran and a construction, as a civilian , I understood former President Trump's demeanor and combative tendencies. It is part of the working man's ethos . He is too thin skinned. It was his policies that I supported not his childish antics on Twitter. I am a Florida voter and supported Governor DeSantis. If Trump is the candidate and not DeSantis, I will hold my nose and vote for him because the alternative is to support policies that I find abhorrent.
