i studied parts of our Bible, indian upanishads sociology, anthropogy... i got luckier and luckier... simultaneously almost got deep into The bhagavad gīta As It Is - bhaktivedānta... and at least one of j campbell's oversize books. the professor has a mystical ability to find images of the essential ineffable. i would not conceive as "possible" the images from around our planet that he could find And Place Properly in the puzzle of human "upanishad": our moving firmly UP to God - and to The Personal God. he Accurately identifies God as a person ! with a personality. i am a catholic christian harekrishna - and it All Fits. lucky was i also with my harekrishna teacher: father Siddha Vidya, a student of ac bhaktivedānta prbhpd. a tremendous lineage esp in our days of Lies and Deceit. maybe prof cambell had the chance to read Valmiki's Rāmāyana, or the mahabhaharata - sacredtexts.com - maybe the cream of vedānta the Sr.mād Bhagavatam - vedabase.com. very compelling

synchronicity runs the universe. the trillions of chemical reactions each second going on in your body right now that are keeping you alive are run by the synchronicity of this universe. when you realize this, you will no longer fear death because you can never die. your body stops, but you, never. the universe is a wonderful place.

@louiscolborn6715 i once thought as you did - sarcastically. There's a reason even for that. Even if there isnt a literal "soul collector" even if there's no such thing as a soul. There is energy. Or at least that's our label for it. And its manifested in all sorts of ways and in varying degrees of abundance. We have scientific understandings and we have philosophical understandings and spiritual understandings. Not all of these things are in alignment but perhaps one day. Or perhaps not.

To all those who are causing suffering in this world, directly or indirectly: Heed your dreams at night, those nightmares that you most assuredly are having are imploring you to change -before it’s too late… The quality of our dreams is both a reflection of our thoughts and actions as well as a general foreshadowing of the fate of our souls in the next life...A nightly, temporary karma that beckons us to change - for the good - so as to avoid a more permanent karma❤️‍🔥 Beauty(🌷)+Complexity(🌎) =Intent(❤️) The Figure 8 Analogy: An analogy on life, death, the dream-state and the symbolism intertwined within the human experience. We human beings are not traveling in the abstract motion of a straight line towards death (for instance, the numerical straight line of say 1-89). Instead, we are moving in the motion of a figure 8. The Figure 8 is a natural repeating pattern that is divided into two halves and is thus the perfect symbol to represent the human life cycle and our two primary states of existence that we are continuously moving in and out of -the Awake state and the Dream state. When we awake from sleep we come full circle to when we fall back asleep (represented by the bottom half of the figure 8 )and when we go into the dream state we come full circle to when we awake from the dream state (represented by the top half of the figure 8 ). Upon death; the figure 8 of life untwines, but it’s not the body untwining from the mind that this analogy represents. It's two states of mind untwining to form a larger state of mind (8-0)… Because the awake state is really a state -of mind with our body's physical reality "consciously" intertwined, and the dream-state is also a state of mind with our body's physical reality "subconsciously" intertwined. Therefore; upon death, these two states of mind untwine to form a “larger” state of mind. A state that has all the potentialities of the dream-world (flying, telepathy, psychokinesis, etc) combined with all the actualities of the awake world(nature, form, bonds, etc). This I refer to as the transitional analogy. While conceiving The Figure 8 Analogy, I realized life and death must be perceived -from one point of view- as seperate entities(the transitional analogy(8-0), but must also be perceived -from another point of view- as inseparable entities(the symbolic analogy👇), both of which are ultimately linked by the dream-state. The “Symbolic Analogy” consists of the untwined figure 8 of life/the “circle of death” ( O ) abstractly overlapping the ‘circle of life’ (Earth(🌎)with the overlapping area representing the dreamstate-like the common area in a Venn Diagram-and implies that the dream state is just as much a part of life as is of death (by which explains precognitive dreams, prodromal dreams, "visitations" by deceased relatives, etc) for the dream-state has a foothold in the afterlife; and is based on the premise that “while our body sleeps our dream state symbolically represents the state that awaits upon our body's ultimate rest.” In other words, while we are lying down and sleeping/dreaming, this natural process symbolizes where we go when we're ultimately lying down/dead -to a place like our dream-state...A state "of mind” with our body's physical form+Earthly bonds eternally engrained and intertwined. ~8~

Personally I have always been horrified by the story of Jephthah's daughter in Judges 11:30 - 40 and saw the tale as a horrible victim story. Since reflecting on this talk I can now read this again and instead of feeling disgust, I now actually see this story as a teaching fable in which Jephthah's daughter is undertaking her hero's journey.

This is very cool. Way back when this first premiered on PBS, my dad and I watched this together. For the next few years, whenever public television would do a marathon, there we were! My dad on the coach, me on the love seat, riveted to the screen. This, David Macaulay's "Castle" and Carl Sagan's "Cosmos", were among our favorite series. We'd actually discuss all the ideas, reflections and mythos. My dad was born in 1927 and grew up in the depression and had an adequate education, for that era, but he loved learning beyond his grade 8 education. He's still alive and he'd love to see this again! I'd also add, that after I saw this series, I bought the "Power of Myth" book and then several books by or on Joseph Campbell. The biography, "A Fire in the Mind" is very excellent and highly recommended. Once you read or listen to this man, your life is forever changed....and if you dig even deeper, you're revealed to an even more interesting story....great stuff!

&&&&& Really? He’s on my short list of “People I’d most like to meet” What a gift to mankind!&&&& Joseph Campbell was a right-wing racist and anti-Semite And you think he defines a “hero”? And did all that ‘hero’ talk seem a bit…white? Not unexpected from a man who was a notorious racist. In an infamous 1989 article at the New York Review of Books, the media fixture Brendan Gill recalled knowing Campbell through their membership at the Century Club in New York City. As he reported: “The bigotry that Campbell displayed toward blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities was so irrational that one hesitated to believe he was in dead earnest.” For decades, Campbell had been a literature professor at Sarah Lawrence College. By several reports, he’d protested the admission of Black students, saying they were “unable to retain information.” A woman who worked at his publisher recalled: “It was amazing to me that this man of cosmic vision could harbor such meanspirited and seemingly unexamined biases against much of humankind.” His anti-Semitism was particularly startling. Campbell was given to spouting off about Jews, saying things like “I can always spot a Jew” or “not all of the Nazis’ ideas had been so bad.” After Brendan Gill’s report, a Jewish student of Campbell’s recalled him saying “Jews had ruined 20th century culture” and that he’d spent his life trying to avoid Jewish company. Campbell was recalled giving a lecture once and speaking of humans as predators who ought to behave like it. A woman in the audience asked: “What about the six million who were gassed during World War II?” Campbell, she said, shrugged and replied: “That’s your problem.” In 1992, Robert A. Segal published a paper, “Joseph Campbell on Jews and Judaism,” that quoted these moments, and he finds Campbell “never says anything positive about Judaism…” And what about the Nazi links?

Schindler's List: A story of Schindler, someone who was motivated by greed and operating within the Nazi's SS, but also had an altruistic streak that helps him to transcend this, and emerged as a true hero who took great risks and by so doing, saved the life of many. This is true history, and listening to this talk has given me a deeper insight into the hero of the story. The myths bring out a complexity of human character, which lines up with history, because people are not all black or white.

"The only myth worth thinking about in the immediate future is one that talks about the planet. Until that you don't have anything! " Spoken in the 80's by Joseph Campbell. His understandings and shared wisdom was then and is now, STILL a gift to us all. Our current difficult world situation seems preordained to failure, because we continue to be sold the idea that it's not about the $$, it's ALL about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Sadly our man made economic system must fail and then something else will arise from the ashes.

Jung's "Psychological Types" offers a clue as to the phenomenal success of this series. Both Campbell and Moyers are "ENFP" types - "idealists" seeking (and creating!) "wisdom". The series, like myths themselves, speaks powerfully to people with a gift for abstract language (iNtuition) paired with a sensitive nature (Feeling). These are the most misunderstood of all the types, and they heard in Campbell's message a "Clarion Call". These interviews (especially the 1st 2) are FILLED with sage "snippets" for the ages. 25 years ago, one rang true for me. I'll go find the time marker and edit it in here ( ), Campbell tells a story of a farmer plowing a field, and his plow gets caught on something. The farmer reaches down and finds a ring. He pulls on the ring and a door opens into an underground cave filled with gold and jewels. Moyers asks, "what does that say to you?". Campbell replies, "where you stumble in life, THAT'S where your treasure lies!" I borrowed this idea in a song lyric about my mid-life crisis where the "muse" (named Keri in the song) "helps me see all the jewels that are the reasons" (the inspiration for the song, and the quest for my True Life Purpose). I don't know if I'm allowed to do this (probably not), but interested Campbell fans can hear the song here, inspired largely by this series ---> ukposts.info/have/v-deo/ZYNejpqYrJxk0qc.html I recommend all spiritual seekers watch this series with an open heart. This series liberated me from the fundamental Christianity that had me chained to a dogma that made no logical sense. Campbell gave me the language to understand what is God? Where do Gods come from and how do I make sense out of the world in respect to this spiritual mystery. This series is every bit a gospel into the true transcendent nature of humanity done with logic and wisdom. I would play 15 seconds of it then ponder - rewind and play the same 15 seconds again and ponder - over and over throughout all 6 hours. I originally paid $250 for the 6 VHS video tapes in 1990 and if I could find another 6 videos that would change my life in such a postitve way, I would gladly pay $10,000 - Campbell is a hero to many of us.

To give your own life to something higher. To deliver what you love from chaos, dissolution, and death. This is the river of life-wider than an ocean, and as never-ending as a river. To understand with utter clarity, the invisible center behind all beings, behind all things, behind all words as we turn the pages of life. That Angel hovering over the flowers. Over the Earth, over the planets and the universe. To read with comprehension the deepest hearts of life. This is the hero. The one who is my heart, who wields my sword in darkness. Who weaves my body in the dark before I came into being. The hero honors this in the story of their life. These stories are life, cut on the lathe of the spinning of the Earth in the heavens. My paternal grandpa's - maternal grandmother' maiden name was Campbell. This man looks exactly like he could be my Grandpa's brother. 😳 I can barely watch the screen. I swear to God I'm seeing and hearing my grandpa. Or a freakishly close doppelganger. His ears, the shape of his eyes. His hair color and style. His tone of voice. His accent. His intonation. My grandpa had a crippling stroke when he was in his 40s. He could never exactly talk after that. I could understand him. This Joseph's "lisp" even makes his diction sound like my grandpa. And barely minutes in, this man seems to speak on EVERYTHING I stand for.. Aliso, I've spent the last 30 years obsessively studying mythologies and legends.

@@larasikora5534 I've never heard that before. Very interesting. I've never seen anyone before who looks like anyone i know. But I swear if you saw my grandpa, he looks JUST LIKE Joseph Campbell. Its not just the physical appearance tho. There is something extremely acute in their mannerisms that is identical. When Joseph gets really passionate about what he's talking about, a smile lights up on his face, but you can really see it in his eyes. Its a very personal splendor. My grandpa used to tell stories with the same fascination.

I fondly recall my books by Campbell, marked up and highlighted. I discovered him on PBS in University and was hooked. I bpught every book he wrote and devoured them. Young people need Campbell more than ever. They have been stripped of who they are, and Campbell can lead them back home to themselves.

His words are gold. He has been to the promised land, and brought back treasures. Myths have given Joseph glimpses behind the veil. When describing how myths enrich our lives, he could be talking about psychedelics. We are fragments of infinite consciousness, our lives are reflections. We don’t realize that we are the infinite consciousness.
