Learn the Greek consonants Part 4: the consonant digraphs combined with every possible vowel in syllables: μπα, μπε, μπι, μπο, μπου etc. Pronounce the Greek consonants correctly, with many examples and plenty of time to repeat! The double consonants are a bit trickier, so pay special attention!
This is the last video of the Greek consonants series.

Very very clear explanations. Thank you. Constructive feedback: when writing and pronouncing examples of letter combinations in Greek it would have been useful to see their English translations. This way, we would not only learn how to read/pronounce tricky sounds, but would also pick up new vocabulary.

I plan to travel to Greece and I am learning the language on the internet, because even though I am fluent in English (I am actually an English teacher), I want to learn this beautiful language and communicate in it when I have my chance to go to Greece. Your videos are amazing, they are helping me a lot!

I’m loving your videos Lena so keep up the great work! Just a quick suggestion, the videos on the vowels and consonants are really good but could be even better by helping to improve my vocabulary if you added the English translations of the Greek words used to demonstrate the pronunciations, (just underneath in smaller text). I hope you find this comment useful. 😊

Γειά σου, Lina. Thanks a lot for all your very helpful language lessons on the beautiful Greek language. I've just started learning the language some days ago and I enjoy it very much already :-) Also I wish to say that I adore your accent when you speak in English. I saw that someone commented on that with a negative remark, but to me it makes your language courses more authentic, if you ask me and there's no difficulties understanding what you're saying. :-) It sounds wonderful. It's interesting to listen to the pronunciation of the consonant γ when it appears inside of words, for instant in the word άγγελος that you use as an example. Yes, just like you said the vowel is followed by an n-sound (or even an ŋ-sound?) and the g-sound. (To me it sounds like the phonemes ŋ + g). When hearing the word άγγελος pronounced one suddenly understand that it's all about angels ;-) The similar sound is to find in many other language, such as for the English pronunciation of the word "English" - 'iŋgliʃ. I'm looking very much forward to watch more of your language lessons. Thanks a lot for bothering to make these courses for us! Ευχαριστώ πολύ. Good luck!

Hi. Is 《γγ》 really ALWAYS pronounced as《ng》? I've listened to the word αγγλικά being pronounced as "agliká", with a gutural G. The same for 《Εβαννγέλιο》. Maybe it was a regional accent, or maybe they're older people, or something.

ευχαριστώ πολύ! Very good lessons. I don't know if you explain this in future lessons, but when you say μπάνιο you don't pronounce it "bánio". You pronouce the syllabe "nio" like in portuguese we pronounce "nho". And it's interesting because in portuguese μπάνιο is exactly "banho". Clearly a word with greek origin. You can listen how we say it in portuguese if you put "banho" in the google translate. Also, you don't say ήλιος like "ílios", you say it more like we would read "ílhos" in portuguese. You pronouce the syllabe "lio" (or "lios") like in portuguese we pronounce "lho". Many languages don't have the "nh" and "lh" sound and it's one of the most difficult portuguese sounds for people with english as the mother language to pronounce. Write the word "ilha" (which means island in portuguese) in the google translate to listen how we pronouce the "lh" sound. In spanish they also have those sounds and they write it with "ll" like in "pollo" and "ñ" like in "niño". I still haven't watched all your videos, so, I'm not sure if you talk about this, but if you don't, it would be a good topic for a future video.

Τhere is no lh & nh sounds. You just pronounce the two vowels in one syllable ba-nio, instead of two: ba-ni-o. In Greek this phenomenon can happened after any consonant and not just after l and n as in Portuguese.

I am so confused by the word μπράτσο, is it pronounced brato or bratso? It sounds like you say Bratso, and I believe that is correct due to my knowledge of the Romance languages, but I thought τσ together make the sound T, not TS

Can anyone help me? According to the rule, after a vowel, 'ντ' should be pronounced as 'nd'. I've heard the word 'άντρας' being pronounced as 'ádras', and not 'ándras'. Is that wrong, or in this case, are both pronunciations correct?
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 9 місяців тому
Well, this is a very good question! You are absolutely right about the rule, there are of course a few expections. And you are also right that many people pronounce ντ as d while they should pronounce it as nd. So technically it is wrong. I would say it's one of the most underrated and least taught rules. I admit that I even pronounce some words wrong sometimes, out of habit. So, if you want to pronounce it correctly, you go with "nd" in the middle of the word and you are on the safe side. I hope this helps.😊
@rodrigolima5178
@rodrigolima5178 9 місяців тому
@@linaaaap1 That was very helpful! I was in doubt because I only ever heard that word being pronounced that way (with a 'd' sound) once. Everywhere else, it is always pronounced as 'nd', and I thought it could maybe be a very specific exception to the rule. Well, maybe the person just said it wrong, or maybe it was just someone from somewhere it is really pronounced like that. After all, people from different cities/regions will have different accents/pronunciation. Ευχαριστώ!

I listened to you pronouncing all the words with "ΤΣ" and it sounds to me like exactly like "ts", not like the "ch" sound in "chair" or "tch" in "match" like you say. Also, when listening to you pronouncing the words with "ΤΖ" it sounds exactly like "dz", not like "j" like you say. This is very confusing. If the correct way to pronounce those two consonant combinations is like you are pronouncing them, then the "ΤΣ" is pronounced like the "ts" in the word "outsourcing" or "sports" and the "ΤΖ" is pronounced like the "dz" in the word "adzuki".
