Manor Lords is currently the #1 most wish-listed game on Steam and without a doubt my most anticipated game of 2024. While the game is slated to be released into early access on April 26th, I have been given a bit of early access to the early access.
So in this video, I want to kick of a village build. I'll give you some tips and tricks that I've picked up after playing all week, as well as provide you with my first impressions and let you know if the game lives up to the hype!
A huge thank you to the developer, Slavic Magic, and publisher, Hooded Horse, for giving me early access to the game. Though I was provided a key, this is not a sponsored video.

@@Shifty51991 It's called marketing. The publisher wants to show off the game before release to generate hype. Brands do this all the time. I never normally comment, but I can't stress enough that I want you to keep playing this. I think it would be absolutely fantastic if you used your modern city planning knowledge and combined it with research on historical towns (I would suggest looking at France, England, and Germany). This game looks absolutely fantastic, and think it's perfectly suited to your concept of creating stories for your townsfolk. It's much more compact and much slower progress than Skylines, so it would allow you to much more precisely create a beautiful narrative for your town and the families that inhabit it. Please keep it up, I hope to see more

While I generally agree with your sentiment, there is an important difference here: This single dev has worked on this game for (I believe) 7 years now without getting a dime for it, and it's still only about to be early access. Very likely he had to work in a different job during that time to make a living, turning this game into a sideproject, a hobby of sorts. Which allowed him to pour his heart into it, but is also a working structure very unfit for an established game-development company (it's essentially voluntary unpaid overtime). Colossal Order likely needs to pay millions per year in wages, with little money coming in while everyone is waiting for the next release. And there is also the communication issue: In a large company there will be some "idea"-guys, some topic experts (potentially external) and then there are the actual developers, who are a heterogenous group with different understanding of the latest ideas and rules and how they need to be included in the game. If you're developing stuff on your own, you're both the idea guy and the developer, possibly even the topic expert, and no ideas can get lost or misunderstood in communication. So in many aspects, developing stuff on your own is a lot easier than in a company.

@KorKhan89
@KorKhan89 26 днів тому
I’ll let Katan elaborate, but one thing I do know is that medieval European society was surprisingly litigious. There are lots of legal records concerning disputes about who owned what piece of land, and people suing their neighbours for planting their crops and/or letting their livestock graze where they shouldn’t have.
@daniisdlx
@daniisdlx 26 днів тому
@@KorKhan89 Now I get what this means and I can say, the societal conflict is still a thing! I live in a small Village in Germany and very close to its borders about 700-900M is the next Village located, a smaller one. These Villages exists for a very long time now, back to medivel times, and back in those days, they had very bad disputes with the others, because of field an land use, sometimes even small clashes. And today, the two Villages are counted as one, so they got combined, but still like 2-4 fields between them. It is still common to mock a person from the other village. But its just for fun and joking around, both sides do it, specialy in friend groups.

@@CityPlannerPlays In many medieval contexts from north-western Europe, the primary settlement often consisted of a line of farms with associated evenly sized rectangular plots built perpendicular to a raised road or a central (often triangular) green. The laying out of evenly sized plots by way of careful measuring with rods and chains was important because the acreage determined the associated rents or feudal taxes. In most of the research cases I study, having different plot sizes in a primary settlement stage is unlikely because every colonist would have agreed to a certain amount of acreage commensurate to his part of the endeavour (like clearing trees, digging ditches and building farmhouses). I hope this answers some of your questions...

The three different scenarios right from the start I already find intriguing, as they're three very different styles of play; pure city builder, something akin to a traditional RTS, and a more defensive "base survival". I have to agree, the way the game is completely built around organic construction is really nice. I've seen the more natural. non-grid roads in Farthest Frontier, but they way that home plots are set up is pretty cool, especially with how the larger areas of irregular plots allow for outbuildings to boost the city rather than those all being individual structures you have to allocate space for.

I'm super late to the party on this, so it's probably too late to make a difference, but it's typically more efficient to break up the various fields you have into smaller field units. From what I've seen and been told, Fields operate on an "All or Nothing" logic, so even if you harvest 97% of the field, you won't actually get any food from it, which becomes a major risk if you make your fields too big. Also if you add Oxen to plow your fields, once an ox is working on a certain field, no other humans can help to plow or work that particular field until the oxen are done. Also, apparently having a Burgage extension dedicated to making bread vs using the "Communal Oven" is much more efficient at making bread for some reason.

Thanks, Phil, for demonstrating this game properly. I watch another channel, but his schtick is to goof everything up, so I wanted to watch a legitimate playthrough of this game. Please do more because this type of game is right up my alley, and I want to see if it would be something worth buying. I'll wishlist it for now, but that doesn't mean I have to get it if it turns out it's not exactly what I want.

I spend most of my free time day dreaming about how I'd make a modernize medieval towns using contemporary technology, so this is right down my alley. *The following is a rant about Medieval urban planning* Basically, the metric on how urban centers can be measured until the Industrial Revolution is how water is transported. Water can provide power for mills and machines, drinking water, baths, and sewage. In order to have any of these, you need a centralized administration with enough money and engineers to not only build houses and roads, but sewers and pipes *under* those roads. Rome's famous for its aquaducts (and for good reason, they were *very good* at aquaducts), but basically any large city had them, in some form. It's very hard to find information on this hyper-specific topic, but in Northern Italy, around the Renaissance, canals and aquaducts would flow into cities to power early pseudo-factories. In game, we see Windmills, which while very cool, wouldn't really be used by such undeveloped communities in this time period. iirc, and I probably don't, the windmill was only really used in Northeastern Europe ~1300s onwards. However, the design shown is very faithful to the designs I've seen, so I'm more than okay with their inclusion. Medieval Europe was pretty backwards in its urban planning, frankly. While the Mediterranean continued to design good cities (especially Venice), the cliche "Dark Ages" regions certainly didn't. Paris didn't have a passable sewage system until like the 1860s. Cities were very small, too. After the fall of Rome, the city's population went from 1 million, to 55 thousand. Most cities, then, were very small, and didn't have the manpower or centralization to make "good" cities. (They were mostly "above-ground," with little underground works like Baths or Sewers). Despite the lack of resources, some European cities were smart in how they were made. The Vikings, for instance, had multi-story houses and sensibly laid out cities. Cities would usually be made directly on rivers (which were used as transport/sewage/drinking water). Lords would rule tiny areas, with even smaller populations, who farmed to feed themselves, and paid tax to the Lords. Kings were basically jokes, outside of the early HRE and England/Scandinavia, and had basically 0 power. (The King of France, before the 100 years war, only owned Paris and the region surrounding it). I really hope you can reach higher tier levels of city in this game. I'd love to see canal digging or aquaducts, since we already have windmills. I've designed several mechanisms, actually, to drive machines using wind or water power (You can replicate most steam powered machines). The main thing blocking medieval cities from expanding and flourishing was centralization and planning, which you (the player) can provide. (This is an ADHD fueled Engineering hyperfixation, not autism)

@hafor2846 25 днів тому
I don't disagree too much, but there are a lot of stereotypes that really aren't true. The Late Middle Ages had a higher level of urbanization than the Romans, it was just that Rome had a few very centralized cities, whereas Medieval Europe had a whole bunch of cities, spread over the entire area. Population and population density were on the rise during the entire Middle Ages, only broken by the black plague once. And even then it was higher than Rome at its peak. They also generally didn't have a lack of planning. People didn't just live in randomly sprung up ghettos. Your Paris example falls flat precisely because it talks about the 19th century. That's 400 years after the Middle Ages. That's like saying the Romans in antiquity were bad city planners because in 900 the city of Rome wasn't a metropolis anymore. The vast majority of Medieval cities had perfectly fine sewage systems for the amount of people that lived in them. There are whole archives in e.g. Germany that still have city ordinances from that time period and we know a lot of perfectly normal communal services, from garbage disposal over canal maintenance to fines for littering. They became overwhelmed by the rapid population growth in the 18th and 19th century, but that's neither their fault nor is it Medieval. Paris didn't first get a sewage system in the 1860s, get got a newly modernized one after the previous systems got overwhelmed. The entire Paris remodelling absolutely has to be seen in the larger context of Napoleon III. and his politics by the way, but yet again, that's not even close to the Middle Ages. You would be right to point out that below ground construction was rare, that doesn't mean that those things didn't exist. Open canals were incredibly common and as I said, mabye not perfect but for the amount of people living in the cities, perfectly adequate. Bath houses meanwhile were more common than today. It's the reason for Central and North European sauna culture. Enormous running water baths were more common for the Romans of course (not entirely so, there were some famous baths all around Medieval Europe), but essentially every village had a bath house and cities had more than one. In the same vein, you would be incredibly hard pressed to find a single city in the High Middle ages that didn't have multi-story houses, that's not at all something unique. That's not something that just happened in Italy or the Mediteranean area, but everywhere. E.g. Nürnberg as a prominent, but not unqiue example. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geschichte_der_Stadt_N%C3%BCrnberg#/media/Datei:Nuremberg_chronicles_-_Nuremberga.png Finally, wind mills were all over Europe by the latter half of the 12th century. This game plays in the 13th century, by this time they were incredibly common. The only reason why a small village wouldn't have one is that most commonly wind mills were owned by the Lords and used as a sort of tax collection location. Milling grain is absolutely necessary and wind mills can't be hidden, so a fee for using a mill is an easily controlled way of raising a tax on agrarian activity. By the Late Middle Ages, people literally ran out of spots to put them. Every single suitable river was filled with water mills and most hills had mills on them. The famous Dutch wind mills where you can see rows upon rows of them next to each other weren't uncommon in Europe at all, it's just that the Netherlands were a place where they survived as landmarks. This is another metric by which the Middle Ages usually surprise people who haven't studied the topic. If we define it as a sort industrialization metric by how much power is generated for a civilization, then by the Late Middle Ages, people are squeezing every bit they can out of the land, without resorting to steam power or electricity. Same as nowadays there really isn't any capacity for Europe to expand hydro energy, by the end of the Middle Ages there literally wasn't any space to build more water mills. This far outstrips e.g. the Roman capacity for power, which relied far more on manual labour, often provided by slaves and a lot less on machinery.

@@hafor2846 You're absolutely right in everything you said. When I said "Dark Ages" I was referring to France ~900-1200 (Which is what, in my experience, most people associate with the 'dark ages') Though I will completely concede that's a generalization that I didn't explain, and could be damaging to people's understanding of the Middle Ages, which is extremely shaky already. I should have mentioned the HRE & Eastern Europe more, as they were *far* more advanced than people give them credit for, but it's also out of my area of expertise so I opted to not be wrong than be right. I did not watch the video before making this comment, so I actually didn't realize this game was (in hindsight, very obviously) set in 1200s Germany, which makes the windmills a moot point. The topic of wind and water power in the Middle Ages is something I am absolutely fascinated in (I think I mentioned that I had designed mechanisms in light of it), so I'm a little disappointed in myself for not giving more clarity on it. The engineering of Northern Europe is truly astounding for the time period, and makes the whole narrative of The Renaissance make much less sense. As for Paris, it was hyperbolic, and I should have mentioned Napoleon III, but I just wanted to share how Paris being a World Class city is pretty recent, which I didn't clarify one either. I was mainly talking about Medieval Europe in the light of the stereotypical "Dark Ages," which if used at all (which it shouldn't be, really), is for the hyper specific post-Carolingian Renaissance instability of West Frankia. I'll rewrite that comment as to not spread misinformation. Thanks a million for the clarification, I should've spent more time thinking through what I said. Also, as something of note, I'm from Boston (US), so all of this is from hobby learning/ family trips. I may have infused a little too much Roman bias into it, as I was fresh off a Carolingian Renaissance reading binge, so I'll try to reword it to give more favors to Medieval engineering and Masonry. (For instance, the narrative of the English civilizing Ireland becomes nonsensical when you learn of native Irish Romanesque churches and Brehon law. There's a lot of implicit bias and nationalism in how people interpret history)

One thing, your fields are massive, you could subdivide them and rather have more active fields but smaller fields, which you then rotate to keep fertility high enough You can also keep the militia squad active, when you disband them they go home, put their weapons at home and return to work, but then when you need them again they'll go fetch their gear when you rally them.
