It is surreal to watch a video from a creator I respect so much who absolutely gets what we're trying to do. Everything you said in this video is 1000% on point and is exactly what we're trying to achieve with the game. So incredible to see people really started to understand what our real mission is. To address the things you've said in the video, our plan from the very beginning is to split our development work 50/50. 50% of our development work will be on developing the mod tools and platform foundation. 50% of our development work will be on fleshing out the core vanilla game to be a stronger, more unique, and constantly improving vanilla experience. So what you've recommended here is absolutely our plan. While naturally that plan will take time and effort, I feel that both our own team (and our community) is as motivated as we've ever been to continue pushing on that plan. Thanks again for the coverage man, hope I get to see you in-game sometime. Maybe you'll even make (or play) a cool mod sometime. Cheers!

As Plato says... the only thing I know for sure, is that I know nothing. I'm actually working on a website right now for our community that allows us to ingest and sort feedback so we can more accurately prioritize and rank suggestions (through public voting) from the community. Similar to Arma's community feedback tracker. I think it is going to be an incredible tool to incorporate and rank all of the excellent feedback we've been getting. With that all said, I feel like a major trait of any good developer is the willingness to throw out what you think you know, and to use your community to help guide your thoughts. So while I do admit that I'm not as experienced as many other game designers (there is always someone better) I personally believe that the cornerstone of any good designer regardless of experience is the capability to accept and incorporate the thoughts of others. Especially when those thoughts come from your own community. So if anyone was wondering, that's probably my motivation behind putting out posts like that so often when our team is working to incorporate people's thoughts on even some of our smallest mechanics. Love all the thoughts everyone has been leaving. Really been great fun making this game so far, and since launch making the game has only been more and more fun for us.

developing the game for (yet) non existent modding community is like developing game for a non existent esports community, we have already seen on examples of AAA studios how that plan works, in order for your game to be popular amongst modders you need to have a very good/fun base game.
@mltharaka

Problem with unreal engine is they need to release a SDK in order to make mods. So devs have to put effort into making the game as well as exposing variables in SDK. @@sovietnationalism3182 no they're absolutely wrong though. Skyrim is a completely bland game in most ways, the storyline is plain by TES standards, the combat is better than it was in previous titles but that's not exactly a high bar, side quests are meh at best, etc. The replayability is the only thing it has going for it, and even that is mediocre compared to the previous titles. Yet... And even if the fact that TESV is modded into **oblivion** (hehe) could be attributed to the hype it recieved on release and good marketing by Bethesda, there are other cases of games that prove this concept wrong. Roblox doesn't have any content except for the player-created stuff AFAIK. Taking the opposite approach, there are good games with amazing communities and people who want to mod these games, but don't because modding them is too hard. STALKER is open to modding, and so is Source, and Fallout, TES, first two Doom games, etc. Then there are games that are not. Spec Ops: The Line only has config tweak mods, Borderlands series is sort of bad for mods, and don't get me started on how often I finished any of the more obscure games and went like "huh, I liked that and a lot of people liked that too, are there any mods?" just to find out that the only thing I get offered is trainers or savefiles because the game creators didn't offer any modding tools [Way of the Samurai series, agh].

Even for a simcade style game it's pretty lacking but everytime something is brought up it's basically "do it yourself", bit frustrating. Like wanting people to make own maps and modes is one thing, but the basic game should stand on it's own ad imo it doesnt do that, it plays like a proof of concept. If there is no hud you need to give people the ability to get information through other means. The game has a magazine system but I cant check my mags or repack them for example. And I get that it's free to play and all, that's cool but if you want to retain people to play your game, it needs to be more than that.
@1ing1ing

Even without huds, the game still gives players information on where their shot at by sound, bullet tracer, and when the bullet impacts. Many inexperienced players won’t notice these key details, however for more experienced or aware players should notice these and know where their getting shot at.

@OddysseyTalks
@OddysseyTalks Рік тому
I think something that could make it distinctive that would really fit Bluedrake's vision is very comprehensive AI/private match customization. A lot of large scale military shooter PvE is lacking when it comes to replicating enemy players because that much AI running in a single instance is very hard on performance, so it relies a lot on just the fantasy & atmosphere of being in a large scale conflict. If he and his team can make this well optimized and not very graphically demanding, and put a lot more into advanced tactical enemy AI that can be customized comprehensively, it would not only make it stand out but also tailor made for mods. Like the player and enemies being broken into squads with advanced communication and commands between one another and also maybe having a leader for the whole team that has unique orders they can give to all squads. And the commands could be integrated into marking points on the map as a sort of RTS light mechanic. Just some ideas
@OddysseyTalks
@OddysseyTalks Рік тому
As a sidenote: I personally have been wanting something like that for a long time. I'm very into MilSim and MilSim-light games but like you, I rarely play them. My reasons not being a lack of interest but instead that like I said offline PvE rarely captures the experience that PvP does, and also trying to play PvP is tough for me because most of the MilSim community is, to be frank.... really socially conservative and nationalist :/ So as a trans/non-binary person with a queer sexuality, I don't feel very welcome trying to engage in communities that do MilSim operations and mostly reside myself to watching streams and videos of other people playing them. And like, it makes sense why it's this way. MilSims very easily can be used to roleplay a glorification of militaries and imperialism. Which is unfortunate because I think MilSim operations have a lot of storytelling potential to explore morally grey situations that critique imperialism and push players to make really difficult ethical decisions. But instead most ppl seem to just wanna treat it like team sports. *Sigh*

I think if people can turn arma 3 into arma life and have a baller time with it than you can turn a (for now) basic FPS framework into anything else, what really should be focused on with the core of OHD should be networking, UI and ease of intergration with mods and joining servers etc
@beingsactual
@beingsactual Рік тому
ArmA III too has an identity core that draws in content creators and fans like Garbaj discussed, but in its case it is the technical basis rather than gameplay design. It's a game of tremendous scale made to simulate combined arms combat over many hundreds of square kilometers in one game session and, despite the infamy and memeage surrounding its glitches and quirks, pulls it off better than anything else. Arma Life exists because it is given the opportunity to create a massive living island on a server, not because of the tanks or ballistics. On top of that, Bohemia Interactive has been (similarly to OHD's mission statement) treating the game as a platform for content creation (even most of its DLCs are companions to feature-rich platform updates meant to give exemplars of newly implemented functionality for people to toy around with and examine to learn what makes them tick). It includes many helpful tools and a powerful scenario creator. Fairly sophisticated custom code can also be easily implemented into scenarios to pull off elaborate tricks. Lastly, ArmA's modding community is long-lived and well-evolved, far predating the third game. Much knowledge regarding the Real Virtuality engine and the games' structure and workflow has been accumulated and made available over the many years. I haven't really looked into OHD, so I don't know what's under the hood, but the technical base ArmA III provides to content creators (and draws them in with in the first place) is an unimaginably high bar to reach, especially just a week into publicity.

2:02 these sound intentional considering it's trying to go more for tactical gameplay. It's meant to be slower paced.

They're selling 3/4th of the game through DLC… it's not entirely free at this instant. However, the workshop will be interesting. (grammar edit)

The DLC is just a way to donate, nothing is locked behind it though the original wording (if they have since changed it) could be interpreted as if there was.

it has potential, i know its early in dev but the only thing that bugs me out for now is the movement, it feels stiff, its like youre a camera floating around and not floating oh and some stronger anticheats, my first game had 2 hackers that had speed hacks
@callmeliito

weird question, but is the video slowed down? my UKposts was stuck in 1.25x from the past vid i was watching, and just later realized garbaj was speaking slightly faster than i was used, yet still sounding reasonably normal.

I came to test, first match and i was in a team that was constantly getting killed on spawn. 223 points to enemy team, 0 to ours. In other words i couldnt even test the game since i was getting killed by a hacker on spawn in less than a second. Deleted right away.

I mean if people mod and put time into creating content for the game then it’s gonna be fun as hell, if not I doubt it will last long because it’s development team is split up and doesn’t have the time to do both well (I’d imagine)
@cineris2389
@cineris2389 Рік тому
Modding is really only effective when the base game is solid enough to warrant it, that means creating a world/game in which people already want to spend countless hours playing. This is key to a thriving mod community. With a fail game (I'm not saying this is one), most modders won't bother, it's not worth the time it takes to create new things or systems. Plenty of games have gone this route, few have succeeded. Because of this underlying principle. For every TES, X series, M&B, ARMA or Total war. There are a sea of games that wanted that, but didn't have a unique enough base game/system or tool set, to warrant it. Even successful games like divinity 0S 1+2 , failed to foster that. As well as big Franchises like that fail D&D title (Sword Coast legends) a few years back, it was too generic in it's tools and base gameplay to foster any kind of community. You could say it's like catching lighting in a bottle, in regard to lighting such a fire in a modding community. There are also some pretty big shoes you've got to fill in order to draw modders away from those successful franchises, in this title's case, ARMA.
