Total legend. He is for sure the one “science communicator” that I distinctly remember always being exciting for me to listen to. Definitely got me hooked on these topics, as a layperson not involved in these fields. He can engage really well at a sort of “low res” level, knowing what will help get an average audience to begin thinking about these things. But, he can also get so much deeper and show off his chops without making it entirely impenetrable, which is definitely a skill outside of the science itself. Granted, I don’t claim to understand a lot of the deeper complex stuff 😂 but, at a minimum I can start imagining how he and others think about these things, hopefully over time grasping some of these things without actually practicing the math haha

Sean Carroll is definitely the best scientific communicator alive I think. Can make really complex ideas sound simple, is engaging and respectful, doesn't talk down, whilst still gently correcting misconceptions. Brilliant really. Perhaps a slight criticism is that he's just a tad *too* laid-back , could show a bit more passion, but minor nitpick really.

Several? What was so complex or difficult to grasp that you couldn't absorb it the first time? I got bored and couldn't finish the first round. Sing song speak about nothing new with an overabundance of smug is not my definition of a good time.

@@dom6512 We are in sync. Consider also the following, that I experimented with a person (though on other matters - not this scitainment, but general infotainment): "You've been watching this and think that you learned something? Then please try to write down at least some rows of what you've learned." This is the only way to recover some people from the cognitive derail where they think they learn / grasp something.
@dom6512
@dom6512 7 днів тому
@@voltydequa845 More than what people may learn from it, what did they agree with? What did they challenge, and why? I listen to podcasts as a mental exercise. Sometimes I learn new things, sometimes I challenge what I hear and sometimes, I adapt my understanding. Most don't have a clue of the content they listen to and think simply listening makes them smart somehow. They have no grasp on how these topics apply to reality.
@voltydequa845
@voltydequa845 6 днів тому
@@dom6512 Agree. As for learning vs challenging , mine "... that you learned something" applies to both. It is an euphemism out of the need to not be rude by explicitly saying that the person (dear to us) is not able to understand, that is beyond his/her possibility, be it because rhetorically decorated hot air, or be it because too complex from the cognitive and/or intellectual pov. To make it short I resort to concepts of Protagora's "Man is a measure of all things" and Plato's cave expressed indirectly - there's no whatever cognitive value if you cannot grasp it for whatever reason (from Protagoras), and it is a vaste of time trying to get in sync with foreign cognitive domains (from Plato). When it comes to relativity, the recital by carapace and their parroting public, it is beyond grotesque. I was surprised to find that I was in sync with what Tesla was saying about all this. Yes, as in Erasmus' In Praise of Folly when he speaks about the illusions.

Sean Rocks!!! Einstein & Newton were the genius I read growing up. Sean Carroll is my living philosopher I now follow and agree with almost 100%, including my atheistic outlook. He is genius beyond what our generation deserves just as Albert and Isaac. Sean is beyond. He contains so much well thought out knowledge that endlessly emitts in interviews and lectures. Gr8! Thanks professor. This motivates me to re-run (3rd round) and continue professor Carroll's "Biggest Ideas" course, and I just ordered those two of his latest books. In addition to that, these Lex Fridman physics discussions have helped me a lot on my self paced physics MOOC-studies. I really can recommend this podcast series as additional support material for the "Subatomic Stories" on-line course of Fermilab too.
