All you need to know about the preposition "σε", the most common modern Greek preposition.
It is used to express place, destination, time, manner and it is also used in many expressions. In this video we'll cover only the basics, but don't worry, we'll meet "σε" a lot in the future.

Hmm - I've been studying, speaking, reading, and writing Modern Greek for over 35 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen σε used with the Genitive in the same way that the French use "chez." I had also forgotten that σε is never used with the Accusative of months, days of the week, or years. I just learned some new things today. :)

Hi! This is a very logical question, but with a disappointing answer I'm afraid. There is no rule. Ok, to be 100% correct, there are only a few rules, mostly about endings of verbs and declinable words. I don't suggest that you sit and learn all these rules at once. For example, learn the rules of verb spelling while studying the different conjugations, etc. Everything else you'll learn by experience. :)

@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 5 років тому
Good remark and a nice opportunity for a mini Greek lesson! In Greek "apostrophe" is "απόστροφος". "Αποστροφή" (that sounds more like the correct EN "apostrophe") has a totally different meaning: "aversion" or "disgust"! This is not an excuse for my mistake by no means, I just thought it could be useful!
@funenglish248
@funenglish248 5 років тому
Hi. In the example "stis 2 apriliou", you used the genitive case for aprilios, why didn´t you used aprilio instead of apriliou ?
@aggelosn.6846
@aggelosn.6846 5 років тому
This is a bit tricky. The accusative goes to the word "2" and the following word is in genitive form as it has the meaning "of". It's like saying "Στις 2 του Απριλίου (on the 2nd OF April), but "του"/ "of" is usually omitted in this case. It is an expression. Usually whichever noun follows "of" (either explicit or implicit) is in genitive form

Επιτρέψτε μου να σας ρωτήσω κάτι. Πώς να το γράψετε σωστά? τις - στις? Παράδειγμα - Κοιμάμαι μέχρι τις - στις 9 το πρωί ?
@user-xh9rz7rf8l
@user-xh9rz7rf8l 2 роки тому
@user-vs8vf1ij9x
@user-vs8vf1ij9x Рік тому
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 11 місяців тому
Very interesting insights, but just to avoid confusion with Ancient Greek, in the official Modern Greek grammar that is taught in schools, "σε" is a preposition. "Εις" in modern Greek is only used as a prefix in compound words and in some standard expressions.
