I absolutely think LTT should go into consulting. "Designed in partnership with LTT" on a box would tell me there is an amazing product inside. I think LMG has set a standard in transparency for the entire UKposts platform, and would review a product that they had consulted on with little bias and probably additional scrutiny and honesty. Continue to pioneer and grow! P.S. Alex does bring production value for the more techie of us.

@LuLeBe
@LuLeBe 2 роки тому
I think they should absolutely not have such a label. Consulting doesn't mean that the product ends up being exactly as they want it, they just give some input. So that means that the result could be whatever and most certainly would still include certain issues, at least for some users. That would then mean the label just says "well LTT gave some input and we fixed, well, something, but not all" and that would not be what I want from LTT and their reputation.
@sgbench
@sgbench 2 роки тому
@@LuLeBe It wouldn't have to work that way. LMG could only give out the label if the final product lives up to their standards.
@Nate_the_Nobody
@Nate_the_Nobody 2 роки тому
That right there is the slippery slope they would be in, what if they have "Designed in partnership with LTT" and the product turns out to be some weird scam or bait & switch, LTT would receive lots of flak from the fallout, or what if the creator/owner turns out to be a real POS/creep yet they're associated with LTT now because of the branding? Nothing should be LTT branded unless it's from LTT, too much risk of their name being dragged through the mud with how blood thirsty the internet is these days. I would absolutely love to see them consult on more protypes, but keep any affiliation with the product non existant, they might offer a word of input on how to improve the prototype, but it shouldn't come with their name attached to the new and improved product

Consulting advice: if you will do it, be careful to separate it from the youtube channel. This is very critical. You cannot do consulting with all the responsibility of it and then do a sponsored video, or a video at all. We did and still do consulting and product development for years for international clients, and we saw many weird things happened with us and others. Keep all that in mind.

It's nice to see a comment thread that isn't just "I've followed this channel for a few years now so I'd trust you to stay objective". There is no way you could offer a design consultancy service and then objectively review your clients' products. Maybe, maybe, getting 'first look' access to prototypes and giving feedback as part of that process could work, but that would be limited to prototypes exciting enough to drive lots of video revenue.

Mmm... I don't know. The live video portion validates that the opinions of the reviewers are in line with the community. An entirely separate consulting team lacks that grounding. Speaking for myself (although I'm sure others will agree), I would totally welcome and trust the LTT team to consult on products. The end result would be a greater knowledge base and better product for the consumer, which is what we all want. I mean, your history speaks for itself; you rip apart the big and small names without remorse because they deserve it, and you give praise where it's deserved as well. If a company can't handle criticism, then they don't deserve to have you consult. Any company out there that doesn't think a positive experience shown on LTT is worth something, is missing out. I think the LTT team is more than capable of consulting on products while remaining objective and not becoming brand name shills. I would love to see the process of consulting with manufacturers and the process of the changes in the final build. Keeping the reviews and the consulting separated, maybe with different teams, and complete disclosure in any media or coverage of the product. I don't see enough reviewers disclosing that they got their review unit for free or even on lone. If the consulting lab did the work and the video showing the progress came out later when the product was released, it would likely be good content but, more importantly, show us that the manufacturer wanted to see how to improve the product outside of their bubble of staff.

The consultants would have to do more testing than a reviewer typically does, so that doesn't quite make sense. I think you mean the review side has to do their own testing indepent of the consultant side. That way it is ensured that a product review isn't impacted by the fact LTT consulted on it, because the people testing the device for review, writing and presenting the review wouldn't know that another team at LTT tested and consulted on it previously. To be on the safe side, Linus would need to organize that in a separate company/subsidiary, which he could call LCG (Linus Consulting Group), I guess.

The one way I could see it working to consult on products and then review them later would be to do an A:B split kind of thing. Team/Resource A does the consulting on the product, Team B has no involvement with the product during this phase and during review time B takes over. That way you'd potentially ensure that the review is more impartial because the person had no part in trying to improve the product until that point.
@LRM12o8

Linus should open up Linus Consulting Group (LCG) as a subsidiary or even separate company, where a Team of experienced former LMG employees and new hires do their own testing for consulting, separate from the testing that's done for the reviews. And the employees working on the reviews (testing, writing and presenting) can't know which products the consultants team were and are working on, because it's a different company.
@namAehT
@namAehT 2 роки тому
Not only that, but Team A would likely have very detailed benchmarks and engineering specs of the final product that Team B could use in their review/sponsorship. Linus has already stated that Labs will be doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to the backend of the review process.

Well now companies are trying to slim them down a lot and it's coming at the expense of performance from the components in the laptop. Paying for such high end components only to get 70% of their performance is trash. Enter the best of both worlds: your gaming/high performance laptop is thinish so using it away from home is reasonable. There's a good market for it. Already, you have one of my dream shops for such work. Just add a little more science (i.e. the Lab 2) and you're golden.

Thanks for the updated video. I can certainly see the appeal of a mobile platform for work and then going home, plugging in , and gaming. If you do consultations and then review the same product, you must be upfront about it to both the vendor and your audience. If if you consult, you can still give a review with pros and cons. If you consult and review the same product then your viewing audience knows that you are trying to be both fair and business minded.

Totally do the consulting. I believe that even if you give your ideas to improve a product, you will be totally honest if it sucks or is absolute sh%t. You have shown time and time again that if the product you review has flaws, you test honestly and are honorable in disclosing everything. You and the crew have proven your integrity and earned our trust. I also wish GN Steve would consult for more case manufacturers before they put out a case. There would be some kick ass cases going out in stores. Manufacturers could release products that could potentially be incredible for ease of use and best possible performance.

As much as I love it, I know that every single paper I publish with have to have an acknowledgment of possible conflict of interest. I'm not saying that there will be conflict of interest of course, but the human ability to be sceptical could always bring questions over the authenticity and reliability of your reviews. Especially considering the investment with Framework which could easily bring in financial implications rather than just damage to reputation. If you were to do a consultancy role, you would have to ensure that it is kept entirely separate from LTT with effectively no sharing of knowledge that isn't in the public domain.

Also, If I have any questions about tech or new products, I firstly look on youtube to well informed, nerdy, amazing guys like LTT. If they've reviewed it or looked at it or ANYTHING, you can bet I'll know the great, good, bad and ugly about said product. Yes you guys should do consulting when offered to do so. I feel like the LTT team has a great amount of different perspectives on the tech without being involved in the development of these products. I personally feel that having an even lighter and slimmer laptop without the 3080 ti and then being able to plug that into a watercooled egpu 3080 ti standing on the desk would be a LOT more interesting and reliable than this. @@ionstorm66 They could probably do with a better cooling solution. I'm pretty sure it's just a 140mm radiator with a 140mm fan. I'd like to see what kind of results they get after running that system hard for 4+ hours like a hard-core gamer might. I know they're mobile versions with limited TDP, but you're still cooling the CPU, GPU, and who knows what else inside that rig on a single cooling loop with a single square radiator with a single fan of unknown origin. It's probably going to heat soak eventually, and that's not something they seem to have tested here. I'd probably make this cooler a 280mm radiator with 2 fans, and maybe even have a push-pull configuration with 4 fans for redundancy. And yes, I'd also integrate some docking functions (and make the connector to the dock part of the quick-connect) for your "home base" USB peripherals, LAN connection, and whatnot. There's definitely room for improvement in the design, especially considering that this is likely going to be sold at a premium price point. This is not a low-budget setup.

I think LTT having a “conflict of interest is fine especially if it is stated clearly. I would like to think the average viewer of this channel was someone who can think about the product that you talk about and make their own decisions about whether the features or recommendations from you guys are actually going to worth the price for them. Yes conflicts of interest in business are to be worried as long as you show your cards when reviewing them “like how you have to do when you’re sponsored” it should be fine. Having faith in your viewer to think for themselves is part of the relationship companies like yours has to their audience. You were sponsored to review this product previously and you tore it to shreds for its downsides, as long as you keep your scrutinizing standards the consulting shouldn’t be a problem.
@chasm9557

I agree. State clearly if it's something you consulted on, and do your best to remain unbiased. Something to help you remain unbiased would be to have both a consulting person AND a non-consulting person work on the review. Start with the non-consulting person giving their full review, then bring in the consulting person after to cover what they suggested during the consultation and to check of any of it is better/worse/the same. It would be cool to see what results the consulting had on the product, but would also help maintain the integrity of the review by having transparency. Like, if a review of a gaming mouse had a critique like a certain button had a slightly mushy feeling and the consultant comes on afterwards and says something like, "yeah, it was waaaaay worse before, this is almost tolerable now." it would be cool to see what progress had been made on the product.
