AK-47s are also able to fire underwater and full of sand. Some would claim that they also fire under sand and full of water, but that sounds like a western lie. Such conditions only exist while taking fire in the rain and within a foxhole/on the ground, a common thing for cowardly, NATO troops. Russians have no need of cover! The only time sand and water may approach a russian weapon is when our Babushka rises from the grave and pours vodka down our throats!

During my basic training I graduated my rifleman specialization with the AKM. What a lovely rifle! Very accurate up to 300m, but after that it becomes kinda difficult due to the recoil and slow round. However, it feels very good to shoot it, like you can tell it was made for war, not for piercing paper. After tranisition to 5,56 platform it felt like having a toy. It was much easier to handle the 5,56 when you are already good with the AKM.

@@sterlingcampbell2116 both calibres are not really good past 300 yards, this rifles are not made to fight past 200-300 yards. I can hit with 7,62 as good as with 5.56, the max range if it comes to precision is a bit higher for 5.56 but in generell that would not matter in a fight because fights with assaultrifles are normally at max. ranges of 100-200 yards, most of the time under 100 yards, so the slightly higher range of the 5.56 does not really matter, except you are on the range and want a bit more range to shoot, but if you want that you are better of with a different calibre.

@@Lowiqpeoplethinktheyresmart Tumbling and fragmenting are two different things that have very different cavities and wound channels. The 62 grain out of a 16" has on average, 300fps less velocity than it's 20" counterpart. Since energy is a factor of velocity squared, the 20" delivers more punch, capable of fraging the projectile at 300 meters whereas the 16" is at its frag limits at just over 200. @@sloppyfloppy79yeah not many people will ever have to worry about terminal ballistics at that distance. For one, not many people can make the shot, 2 if you’re sniping someone at that range with this small of a caliber.. not a smart or strategically sound move because your picking a fight with what is that moment, not a threat and that’s the only scenario you will conveniently get a torso size target to sit still outside of cover and 3 majority of gunfights over a much smaller distance than 300, getting hits is luck as targets are bobbing up and down peaking and shooting. You’re taking fire, so you’re concealed and barely popping up to take a shot and re cover yourself. Even something like the ACOG is a huge benefit to have for the average line unit. Unfortunately the AKs layout doesn't lend itself to upgrades or modular systems the same way the M4 and M16 do. Also the gas piston is going to be at a bit of a disadvantage for accuracy simply because the amount of mass moving back and forth. The Russians also never put a lot of r&d into better barrels. For better comparison value, and starting with the M4 in 5.56mm-one should use the AK74 in 5.45mm (more likely apple to apple comparison). I was fortunate enough during my service years to shoot on many occasions the AK 74 beside the HK G3 and some other. The AK 74 had a V0 of 900m/s and a 525m effective firing range, very accurate considering the iron sights we only had at that time. More precise was the HK G3, but not as durable in the field after three weeks (of learning the first name of each of the moles we encountered by digging out our "holes" for the day).

I read a book by an Army surgeon in Vietnam, talking specifically about the wounds he treated by different calibers. He pointed out the 5.56 didn't do much damage, UNLESS it hit something hard, like bone or equipment. At that point it became devastating. I attended an autopsy where a guy was shot by one of our officers (after he had murdered his girlfriend). The bullet that initially hit his arm struck bone, and it looked like someone had put a grenade in his tricep. His tricep was basically gone. That was with a standard 55 gr. fmj.

Well, I guess that has something to do with the engaging distances and the specific ammunition. Typically at high velocities, the 556 will basically explode in a pretty short distance when it impacts. The fact that the Russians very quickly made the 545 to replace 762*39 really shows how effective smaller caliber rounds can be. Besides, if my memory is correct, the Viet Cons were actually surprised by the devastating damage done by 556, the very teeny tiny round.

The Ak he took a round through the deltoid muscle, same day I took a ricochet off my NODS mount. This was in Baghdad around 2005 in SAdr City. He got a through and through with the AK and recovered in about 7 weeks. Then, in 2007 when we were back in Baghdad he was walking in a chow line and some Nasty guard POG had a live round in his supposed to be clear weapon, had a negligent discharge with his M4 and the round went right into my buddies shin. The round ripped off a chunk of his calf and snapped both his Fibia and Tibula in half. This one effectively ended his military career. So, if you ask him, he’d Say the M4. Side note: the guys around him nearly beat the NG guy to death, and he ended up in Leavenworth. The guys who savagely beat him ended up getting other than honorable discharges. Tac medic here: since you mentioned it and didn’t expand I thought I would 🤷🏻‍♂️. Tension pneumothorax, commonly known as collapsed lung is a form of obstructive shock when air gathers in the pleural cavity and builds pressure against the lung, which can prevent expansion of the lung. As the pressure builds more it will apply pressure the heart and cause a shift in the mediastinum, kinking the vena cava and dropping the preload of the heart, which will eventually prevent the next heart beat and the casualty will die if not recognized and treated rapidly. Commonly caused by penetrating or blunt force trauma to the chest cavity. Recognition: blunt force or penetrating trauma to the chest, diminished or absent lung sounds on the affected side, progressive shortness of breath, altered mental status, tracheal deviation, unequal chest rise and fall, decreased spo2. Treatment: seal penetrating trauma with chest seals (check for and seal exit wound), needle decompression at the 2nd intercostal space mid clavicular or 5th intercostal space mid axillary, finger thoracostomy, chest tube. Hope that helps someone.

I own and love both the AR and 7.62x39 AK platforms equally, and this video does a nice job of showcasing their different strengths. The 7.62 AK really continues to shine at what it was originally designed for, 2-300m engagements and under as it was originally fielded as a sub gun replacement for the soviets. It’s increased delivery of energy and barrier/brush penetration sub 300m Vs the 5.56, as well as ability to run for 10s of thousands of rounds with virtually zero maintenance or parts replacement make it an extremely effective carbine for its intended purpose 3/4 of a century later. The 5.56 AR really shines in its wide variety of rounds for different purposes and it’s ability to really outclass the 7.62 once you begin approach 300m and beyond, and of course the modern day AR is no slouch when it comes to reliability either. Both carbines remain fantastic performers for their intended roles, and it’s why I usually alternate between them each range day.

I did a contract to test some domestic pistol and shotgun rounds about a decade back and we used the same blocks. The distortions are from surface finish on the block. You can put the block on plexiglass or similar and film from below and as long as the surface is clear then the block is clear, allowing great detail. Can also put a piece of glass or clear plastic against it or even pour water on the top to inspect easily without distortions.

Would have like to see some Serbian M67 vs the 855A1 with barrier shots. Hollowpoint is great, but as a multi-tour OIF vet, my experience is people seek cover when shot at. Barrier penetration is more vital than people believe, which is where HP falls short. Destroying cover also makes your adversary displace, creating opportunities. In urban Iraq, an AK with a buttstock and properly aimed was hard to beat. We used captured ones as truck guns etc. In a world of increasing urbanization and non-stop suburban sprawl, the Kalashnikov with an intermediate cartridge has relevancy for the future. Also has an edge in chewing through body armor better than 5.56 and also better performance in freezing and hot, dusty environments. As a survival rifle, it requires a lot less cleaning supplies. Still love my AR's, but dont discount the Kalash.

Actually 5.56 is better at piercing body armour because of its speed
@chromaticabberationsgiveme9811
@chromaticabberationsgiveme9811 3 місяці тому
@@enanny0616Even though 5.56 DOES penetrate body armor much better (this is a fact and simple physics), the .30 caliber round from an AKM is much more versatile. What do I mean? I mean that the 7.62x39 round is less able to penetrate body armors but much more capable as a bullet. The upsides is that even without penetration, youre having your breath knocked out of your body or possibly even thrown back/fall backward. The impact of the bigger round with more powder means that even if it doesnt penetrate, itll probably break some ribs and possibly make you die from blunt impact either way. Another thing to note is that because of its lower velocity, it actually dumps all energy and slows down way faster which actually makes a better home defense bullet rather than 5.56 (ofc using hollow point rounds negates that advantage over 7.62 fmj and bad marksmanship will end in someone dying unintentionally regardless of caliber). The downsides are usually range-based, which Ill admit hitting anything with an ak at 700 yards or even 500m will probably not be as lethal as 5.56. Now will you ever need to rely on that range advantage as a civilian in home defense or insurgency? Probably not, but if I was aiming that far Id get a higher caliber round rather than intermediate cartridge regardless. So in the end, the AK destroys cover and can kill with blunt damage alone. However the AR15 can defeat armor with specialization and is still very much capable. Its all up to what you want to use

@Garand Thumb An interesting video you should check out is on that was done by Military Arms Channel where they utilized the various military iterations of the 5.56 cartridge in all the military issued AR variants going back to the M16A1. A quick spoiler, the M16A1 was the only AR rifle adopted to ever pair a 20in barrel with a 1:12 twist ratio and when a 55gn M193 is fired through that particular barrel, the results are devastating. I was shocked to see damage performance that appeared consistent with something like .308 or 30.06. The whole point of the video was to test what was presumed to be Fudd lore, whether or not the M16A1+M193 combo was the deadliest iteration and the results were surprising to say the least. If memory serves, MAC conducted their test on Watermelons just like Gunny Ermey would have, itd be interesting to see this particular experiment receive the Dr. Garand treatment with ballistic dummies, irreverent humor, etc.

@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- 8 місяців тому
They did do some testing with 5.45 a while back, and it's clear it has much greater wounding potential than 5.56, one constant is the 5.45 because of it's longer bullet hollow nose and steel core it yaws almost every single time, even at extended ranges. 300 BLK vs 7.62x39 would be interesting though, I imagine they would perform similarly depending on bullet type ballistically they are very similar in drop and energy. In allot of ways the 300 BLK was a attempt to make a 7.62x39 type bullet shoot out of a AR platform, a middle ground between the AR-15 and AR-10.
@jcows12
@jcows12 8 місяців тому
The blackout holds a bit less powder but shoots similar velocities, you can benefit from a 16" barrel for better performance but they also run excellent with short barrels allowing for a compact portable hammer. 300 blk with a 110 VMAX will cause a lot of damage because the projectile is quite soft and expands easily while getting a great increase in velocity over its heavier offerings.

I mean, I could get my entire hand in those wound cavities, and I wear size XL gloves. Don't get me wrong, 7.62x39 wounds were ugly too, and getting shot with either is going to fucking ruin your day, but if I was told I was absolutely going to get shot and had to choose which of those two rounds I was going to get hit with, I'd take the 7.62x39.

I'd give the nod to the 7.62x39 simply because of what you mentioned earlier in the video. Cheaper, bulk, ball ammo...is as effective as more expensive, fancier ammo from the 5.56. The 7.62x39 is also a bit less dependent on speed to do it's job, etc. Add in the better barrier penetration (again of simple cheap ball ammo), and I'll lean that way. Even a "bad" AK round is still 122 grains of screw-you. I would be curious what weird rounds Lapua has - as they produce really expensive, nice hunting rounds for the 7.62x39. Generally I don't see any "fancy" AK rounds outside of the bulk hollow-points, etc.

It’s because he needed to use true 8m3, not sure if he was using that or just normal Tula hollow point, as well as just m67 which is common mil spec ammo specifically made for more yawing when it hits targets, not sure why he didn’t use m67 as it’s milsurp when he used mil spec ammo for the 5.56

I never seen a debate regarding M4 vs AK-47, not specifically anyway. Except in 1 vid with shooting on cinderblock targets. M-16 vs AK-47, yes. M4 vs AK-74, yes. Right off the bat, the barrel length was mentioned which "may" give the M4 a disadvantage as noted in commentary.

We used to talk about lethality between the rounds. From shooting ammo boxes of water or cinderblock walls to see what our 556 would do compared with an ak variant. What we finally came out with from our tests was the accuracy over distance was significantly better for ar/m4. This was important in Afghanistan, unlike iraq. Going through dark areas we all had nvgs. 3rd gen pcs14 and pvs 7. This was when things got fun. If youve never used night vision, its unbelieveable. A whole new dimension of existence. You can see people and they have no idea your there.

Love your video guys, you are the best!!! This is the real deal!!! Just something to add... If I had to do this test, surely I would have shoot some big clay blocks from 4 and 400 yards, as well as big wet magazine blocks, 4 and 400 yards away...so the people would see how the rounds penetrate at close and far, and what the temporary cavitation looks like both from point blank and 400 yards ...High pathetical, from 400 yards think I would prefer to get hit in my arm or leg by a 5,56 round instead of a 7,62...Remember, the 7,62x39 can kill at 2000 yards!!! God bless you all!!!!

It would be interesting to see the Yugo M67 round in action. The Yugoslavs developed it in the 60's with the purpose of creating a superior wound channel than the M43 has to offer. They wanted to combine the punch delivered by the 7,62x39 with the jawing effect of the 5.45x39 (The "poisoned" bullet). If you'll ever make some more tests, I would really like to see that in action.

Incidentally, I have found a soft point round made by Barnall, available in Canada, in 7.62x39. With which, it would be legal to take down a deer. It would be interesting to see it tested, if you were able to acquire some! Cheers

Took the same shot with a 154 grain soft point in 7.62x39 the following year . I hit that shoulder bone and it was just destroyed , deer just dropped on its face and was done. At the time box of those Tula soft points was 4.99 for 20 and I have a few 40 boxes that I paid 6.99

Other questions would be: are they practical? Engagement distance with a magnifier? Would the use of those erase the need for a laser for night fighting? This will probably get buried but it’s something I along with a good amount of people are curious about

Great video but one flaw in my mind. The "specialty" rounds perform better than the 55gr did because they we designed to be shot out of a 1/7 twist barrel. The 55gr not just because of the 20"barrel was designed for a lighter twist as to encourage yawing/frag much sooner. I would put the 55gr through a 1/9 twist barrel and then redo the test against the ak. I think the results will be much more in favor of the 55gr 5.56 in that test... just my throughts of course

Are we talking a single shot in controlled circumstances? Because AK47 would win that due to the difference in caliber. If we're talking active combat situations with hundreds of other factors, I'd lean towards the M4 due to it being lighter and more controllable during sustained fire.

i think the 5.56 rounds - even the common-or-garden loadings - keep pace with the available alternatives because of how psycho they behave once they hit a fleshy target (or something with similar properties). incredible efficiency, and currently not in violation of any laws concerning design of ammunition.
