For those in electrical engineering, it's a fancy name for a linear motor that lets one of its pieces escape.

That would be a coilgun, no?
@hugojmaia
@hugojmaia 2 роки тому
@@andrefilipe6757 The linear motor is literally 2 straight wires and a bar connecting them, the direction of the current determines where the bar goes, the value of the current determines how fast the bar accelerates. In a rail gun the wires are the 2 copper channels and the bar is the projectile. A coilgun is something the people in this channel also made, it is a series of coils wrapped around a tube where you have to time the activation and deactivation of the magnetic field generated by the coils in order to accelerate a ferrous projectile. Doesn't require as high a voltage, but the circuitry is more complicated with a lot of fine tuning required.

Well, for it to be considered a firearm, it has to have a "barrel." So an argument might be made that a railgun doesn't have a barrel, it has a parallel set of rails which do not meet the definition of a barrel. Assuming a "barrel" is a metallic tube typically used on firearms. And a "tube" is a cylinder used for transporting objects. And a cylinder =/= parallel rails.

@@runningchild8052 the way that the rail is a semi-circle, my intuition tells me that the path electricity will take will be "the path of least resistance." So what i imagine is that it is either going to jump across the tiny gap so you're only getting a pinch of that tang force. OR even going from that tiny gap and wrapping around the circle and back thus increasing the distance between the current direction changes. From what I can tell, the best shape would be the opposite of this. The rails being 2 parallel cyclinders and the projectile being a cut-out in between. Like a rounded I-Beam.

One correction for you, the Navy has been working on railguns since at least the 70's. I worked on the Army's version back in the 80's. And here's a couple of tips for you. 1. Purge the barrel with He just before the shot. The lighter gas offers less resistance and will increase velocity. 2. Try a lighter projectile. Al can be accelerated to a higher speed due to less mass. It's that velocity squared component that does the real damage. 3. Cut a vertical slot into the back end of the projectile. The current through the projectile will force the tabs apart and give better contact with the rails and less rail ablation. 4. Make an inductor from heavy wire to spread the pulse out. You should be able to optimize the pulse width to the time that the projectile will be in the barrel.5 5. Increase the pressure of the injector. But you already know that.

You will have to have a pretty good fast high-current switch, but you can use an SCR. What happens otherwise is that you run out of current before the projectile leaves the barrel.

Make full contact to the copper rails. The rear pusher should be a metal piece into a molded sabot holding your projectile. Ends of the U should make electrical contact; it is OK to get it moving with compressed air or a small powder charge. Non electrolytic capacitors should be used. If you are using electrolytic csps, charge in series strings to deliver a quicker high current pulse.

That wasn't really a rail gun, here you need to provide good current for a short burst as the bullet is accelerating,which is why he used a capacitor, if he needed it for a continuous time and not bursts he probably wouldve gotten a strong enough battery, but it's just not useful here and probably not safe unless you made a circuit that stopped it after a millisecond

Thank you for the video. I believe that this qualifies as a gauss gun more than a railrun. A railgun has a physical carriage that the projectile sits and slides back and forth on when it gets moved by the magnetic field. A gauss gun has no moving parts and less friction but requires more power to operate This was still a cool project no matter what you call it tho ;)

The footage you show in the beginning of the big USN railgun, THERE IS NO EXPLOSIVE THERE!!! (THE FIRE IS JUST DUST IN THE AIR CATCHING FIRE WHEN THE SLUG GOES BY), THE FLASH WHEN IT HITS THE TARGETS (THE LONGER VIEW) IS 6 1 INCH STEEL TARGETS!! The first time they fired that one they had a target (1 inch steel at 1000 yards (with a foot concrete and 15 feet of dirt)) they had to recover the round from FOUR FEET IN THE BERM!!!! The 'disposable casing' would be the SABOT (pronounce sAy-bOW) which makes it possible put and round projectile into a square barrel.

Okay. Good first effort. The projectile is launched using a "sabot" in the Navy. First, a graphite sabot round would self-lubricate the barrel of the gun and reduce friction on the way out. Wrap it in balsa wood blacked out with pencil. Second, an AC to DC motor generator would prevent the need for charging, but admittedly would make the gun tethered to a wall.

In some other rail gun build ups the most time was taken on timing the system. In this video no time use for getting timing right. Also projectile was not that powerful, because it did not penetrate most of the targets, but just bounced off. Even in over 100 degree angle... I think that the timing was wrong and therefore the railgun lost much of its power. Also ramping with random power levels means, the timing was even more likely wrong, because the time between coils varies on acceleration that magnetic fields make. Stronger current means stronger magnetic field inside the coils. You would need pretty excellent timing software and equipment to use just random power levels. And there was no hint that they used one...

So do Canadian gun laws specify firearm-status by velocity of the bullet, not by the means it shoots? Because here in Finland if I'm not mistaken a firearm is a firearm if it uses combustion as a means of accelerating the projectile, otherwise it's a "toy". And there's no limit to the size of toys >:D
@theHacksmith

@AdamCooksIt

i think that over here in canada, you don't need a firearms license for it unless it shoots a projectile at over 500 feet per second or that produce over 12 ftlbs of power.
@ollilehtonen6351
@ollilehtonen6351 6 років тому
BlakOrkk There are some minor restrictions. You cannot buy a 6.35mm air rifle without a permit of some sort. But I don't take that as a problem as the smaller calibers pack some nice punch too. On the oyher hand, unlike Germany, we have no limits to airsoft-guns' power/firing modes, which is nice.
