(Scoff, scoff) Truly the words of someone unacquainted with Marvelian (specifically the Asgardian branch founded by the great scholar Waititi) Philosophy! Thor Ragnarok is much more like the masterpiece that Joel has uploaded here, you can clearly see the parallels between how Joel travels in his van and Thor's journey back to Asgard reflecting the meaningless meandering that is life where purpose is often not realized until the destination, not only that but his dynamic with his friends clearly reflects the dynamic between Loki and Thor, the pretence of brotherhood masking deep-seated resentment due to perceived differences, truly a great breakdown of intrafamilial bonds through Friggian ideology. Really I'm astounded that this isn't more obvious, clearly people aren't as educated as I am, my master's in Marvelian history and philosophy with extracurricular courses in Odininian sciences are clearly the reason for this!

I wish I could explain the emotional response Im having from watching this. Im still processing. I cant tell if I feel like I havent done enough with my life, or I just dont appreciate WHAT Ive done with my life. Ive travelled all over the country, and travelled (to a lesser extent) all over the world. The military allowed me to visit different places, and I did one tour of combat in Afghanistan. 13 months from the spring of 2012 to the summer of 2013. In all of the travelling and going to war, I witnessed such a spectrum of beauty and horror. I interacted with the kindest people and, truly, some of the worst. Looking out of plane windows and seeing a community parceled out like a TV dinner. Births and deaths. Life flourishing and life withering away in front of me. Laughing until my stomach actually hurts and my face is cramping, and crying so hard that my hands and feet go numb and I collapse from exhaustion. Honestly, I dont know if my wires are crossed wrong or what, but I feel like I havent done anything with my life, even though I have a cataloge of life experiences and memories. Thanks for the video.
@michaelmoratto

You have a crushing amount of stress and trauma from being in war. Humans should know better than to do that to each other, but some are able to just break through and not feel that empathy. It can even be traumatic to have that empathy trained out of you to prepare for warfare, buch less make it to the front. You should find someone you want to talk to about it who also happens to work as a therapist. And I think at some point in time, when you feel like it's right, you should go back, as a civilian, and experience other cultures as a single human, not as a member of an occupation, which draws with it so many other stigmas and social walls.

12:45 maybe this is a bit too personal, but it makes me really glad to hear you've made these strides in your life. I remember watching Pretend That You Love me and wanting to reach through the screen and tell you you don't need this thing that you're chasing. That you should look for this completeness in yourself, and start approaching meeting new people purely to find whatever connection is there, and purely for the immense beauty of human connection, rather than seeking exclusively romance. I remember one of the people you were with, when you asked if they believed in the "perfectibility of love," and they essentially told you they thought you should reshape your definition of love, and I remember thinking that it would be good for you to take that to heart and consider it. And I think what you were saying here about not needing anybody is a huge part of that. Love is so so much more than romance, too, though I'm sure you know that. I hope it doesn't feel to much like I'm scrutinizing you and your interpersonal relationships, I'm a stranger on the internet and you've been very vulnerable sharing these parts of yourself so I don't want to come on here and tell you how to live your life. This video and Pretend That You Love Me are wonderful films that me and many others are grateful you shared. I think you are a really awesome person, I just wanted to share my perspective on that. 12:41 When you said "all time best in some categories" it was kind of eye opening for me, because I often feel overwhelmed when I think about where I am in my life as a whole. It's easy for me to get down on myself because I look at the big picture and feel like I haven't achieved my potential or haven't improved enough overall, and it feels stagnant and depressing. But I think it's probably good to break yourself down into categories and realize that even if you're struggling a lot in a few areas, there may be some areas where you're really excelling. That line was a good reminder to me to go easier on myself when it feels like I'm not doing my all time best in every single category of life.

A long time ago, before we had movies and cell phones, one of the most important professions was storytelling. I feel like we as humanity have kind of lost that appreciation for the storyteller, and these videos help me recognize how important it is. So thank you Joel, and please continue to tell stories, you're very good at it
@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius 2 роки тому
TLDR- a bit long, but a few thoughts of mine on the lack of appreciation and where it stems from, and how we can relate this to more personal history. It's a bit of ramble, but a basic summary would be technology and the size of society has caused a sort of disconnect between certain professions and the general population, despite the fact those professions have always been extremely important to our development and continued existence. I would say that storytellers do still matter, and they are still seen as important, it's just that the personal aspect has been somewhat removed. If you go see a theatre production or oration, it feels much more like that traditional storytelling practice, and the same goes for any other in-person performance. It's just easy to feel disconnected when you observe everything through a small (or large) screen. Honestly this goes for any aspect of life now performed through phones and other technology when you think about it, and it has very real roots in our own neurology because it's more difficult to recognize people as, well, people when you aren't directly looking at them, this even goes somewhat for seeing people at a distance where you can't see their face easily. I think this disconnect in turns leads to a lack of realization concerning the contribution of a person, just look at modern society, are low level labour jobs appreciated? Are farmer's? Or sanitation workers? Not really, but they are vital for our society to exist, people just no longer see them directly, they don't experience their contribution, and so they see them as inconsequential if they even acknowledge their existence at all. I would say that while I don't consider storytelling as vital as science, engineering, or essential labour (like agriculture), it has a HUGE impact on social and cultural development, and was historically how we influenced successive generations by trying to give them some context for the world around them. It still provides that function, and it's still meaningful in a cultural, political, and social context, but it's easy to see the people on screen as somehow "fake", that they don't exist outside of that, and that these stories just appear (because the effort going into making them isn't apparent). Combine that with shorter attention spans and the instant access to so much in the way of entertainment, and it's easy to see why the professional recognition of storytelling has sort of vanished in many people. If you look at the Ancient Greek τραγούδια ( or Tragedies and other types of theatrical performance like Κωμωδία, or Comedies) or Roman Spectaculum, the size of the production increased, and traditional storytelling evolved from being very personal, told around fires, dinner tables, or in front of guests, to being orated in front of a large audience in places like the Greek Θέατρον (which is where we derive the word for theatre indirectly via Latin) or the Roman Theatrum. It was more impersonal, but there was still that human element as a result of being able to see and identify with the performer's. It was the beginning of what we see now though, a larger shift away from a single storyteller or orator towards large scale productions that were increasingly distant from the individual audience member, but the society as a whole viewed these positions as very important despite that increased distance. This was due to the fact that the performer's were there, the production happened right in front of you, and there influence was far more when you were constantly distracted by other forms of entertainment. I'm not saying theatre is somehow better than cinematic media, far from it, I much prefer television and film to theatre production's, but it's necessary to sort of reinforce that realization that these are actual people performing an important role in our society. You can get this through a more abstract form, like Joel has presented here, snippets of life, but there's still that disconnect, and if you don't have good abstract empathy it's difficult to make that connection between what you see on the screen and what this person is contributing. That's my incoherent thoughts on the matter anyway.

You would be surprised by how easily some people will offer help or have a deep conversation with you if you are just nice to them and look non threatening. Then add something like living in a van and they're even more likely to at least chat with you. Other factors can affect how willing strangers are to do something as well. For example, I have a very cute service dog and she has gotten us free stuff on countless occasions. Typically it is just from a worker who wants to give her food, but it has also gotten me some very good discounts at stores when all I really did was ask the employee about one nicely or sometimes as a joke.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate a couple of things: 1) to be random clips, this is edited beautifully. The non scripted dialogue is wonderful and the gravity of a lot of the words is relatable as hell being a millennial. 2) we should all put our differences aside and realize just how beautiful this country is. The people are beautiful. The landscapes are beautiful. It's a breathtaking region. 3) how remarkable it is for Joel to be able to make this journey and share it with us. I for one am living vicariously and loving every second of it.

Joel I think I subscribed to you a bit before the ebsynth videos blew up insanely, and I started liking your work more and more, particularly because of the range it has, the awkward nonsense skits kinda grounded in reality that a lot of times have beautifully shot scenery as added bonus, the crazy fantasy shorts with the "joelhaver animation style", and these life film documentary things that I've been loving, they feel bizarrelly good to watch. your van trip hits me in such a weird way, because before the pandemic I lived in my van for around 6 months, and sometimes it didn't feel that good, my head was never in the moment, I was worried about a bunch of things I couldn't really do anything about, and wasn't able to even try almost anything I wanted to do. But when it ultimately did start feeling better, balanced some online work with the weird nomad life, I totally got that "I'm just off" head space you talked about, started paying attention to cool stuff on the side of the highway, realized I could meet a bunch of cool people, and stopped worrying so much. when the pandemic hit I parked at my mom's place and had some quiet time with my brother. In 2021 though I traveled again to do some volunteer work pretty far from "home". I thought it was even actually safer than staying still because my mom lives in a considerably populated area where covid did a lot of damage. Where I ended up staying for 3 months was a small town, most people found weird that I wore a face mask to most places. I took my small guitar ukulele thing and I recorded some songs on the road, cover songs from music people I met in real life mostly. I have a friend who has always been bugging me about documenting stuff I do because I end up in weird ass places always, and I feel like they would make for nice pieces of sound and vision. I got an iphone from my brother and I bought an used zoom field recorder. I got like 30 mins of live music filmed in all sorts of cool pretty places now that I was just editing last month, and I wanted to say your little documentary pieces definitely were a big incentive, you inspire and you entertain me a whole lot, and I can tell from very far I'm not the only one. I saw that other video about you having a big list of movies people send you, and I wanna do a movie to add to that list now, so again, alongside some friends bugging me about ideas your example of heartfelt execution is a big push towards realizing some ideas that can easily stay just that, ideas. Thanks a lot Joel I hope our vans can kiss someday lol I dunno if you'll ever read this or if you like it when people write a whole damn essay on your comments but I wanted to do it if you dont like it just tell me to fuck off I wont do it again, thanks for being a cool dude happy 202020 to you

Thanks for the beautiful comment and thanks for sticking around! There is a bit of a struggle of just letting yourself be when traveling in a van. I had days where I had to fight the urge to get a thousand little things done. Taking a nice hike was always a nice way to clear the brain. Love that you've been traveling and capturing music and I love to hear that you've been inspired to make a movie, go for it! When you do it'll be added to my list :) Wish you the best! I hope our vans can kiss someday as well

Your videos, Joel, remind me to appreciate the raw, subtle things about the human experience. You don’t try to make a video special in a way that’s flashy. You make a video special in a way that’s true. You remind me of what it’s like to soak in the silence of absent distractions. What it is to listen to my fridge hum and cars pass along the wet road. What it is to listen to the flickering of my book pages turning. You remind me to watch the water droplets roll down my glass of water. To feel my breath fill my belly full rather than my head. You tell me of the creaking, whining floor boards late at night when you go to chase room temperature water down your throat that spills over your chin. You whisper that silence can be filled with chaos AND calm, and both are extraordinary. The videos you have like this really inspire me to live whatever the fuck my life ends up being. I wrote this in my journal and I felt the need to share. Thank you for all that you do with your videos. They bring me peace.

Never stop sharing your vision with us, my friend.

This is prime Joel content for me. i just love these little "update" kinda deals you do. tho obviously this was just the left overs from those updates but still. It really captures the strange melancholy of being alone outside on the road or whatever. I usually feel it when i am out for a nice long walk in the woods or something. When i don't feel the need to rush back home to my computer or something and i just stop here and there and look at things and enjoy nature and life for what it is. I think you really captured that.
