Inspired by films and literature during his youth, Edward C. Byers Jr. aspired to become an elite soldier in the United States military. After a deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 1999, Byers was accepted to attend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. He graduated with BUD/S Class 242 and fulfilled his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL.
On December 8, 2012, Byers was part of a hostage rescue mission involving an American Physician being held captive by the Taliban. After a difficult hike to the target, Byers' SEAL team reached the compound where they believed Dr. Dilip Joseph was being held.
Following closely behind Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque, Byers entered the compound, shooting dead an armed Taliban fighter and engaging others in fierce hand-to-hand combat. During the firefight Byers would use his body to shield the Dr. Joseph from enemy fire.
After the successful rescue of Dr. Joseph, Byers noticed Nicolas Checque had been wounded during the firefight and attempted to resuscitate him, but Checque would eventually succumb to his wounds. Nicolas Checque was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.
For his actions Edward Byers was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 29, 2016.

All articles about this say it was because of the sandstorm brought the helicopter down and everyone died from the crash. Nathan didn't die from the crash, himself and others were injured some severely but they had been found by the enemy and all the ones that were alive were shot and killed. He was killed 1 day before his 23rd birthday and we laid him to rest 1 day after he was supposed to be coming home from Iraq. The town we grew up in was small just about 5300 people and there wasn't one person less than that who wasn't outside lined up for miles including other towns around us join in with Fire and police. We had an ex Navy Seal in my hiking club that I got to know. He knew I was ex Navy too, but a radarman. One time I encountered him going up a very steep hill near Auburn CA we call training hill. I was walking and he was jogging. He invited me to jog up the hill with him and I did for about 100 yards but I couldn’t keep up with him so I told him to continue jogging and I would walk the rest of the way up and meet him at the top. I’ll never forget what he said which was no, I’ll walk up with you, we never leave a man behind. I said you were a Seal and I was a radarman, that doesn’t count, you guys did pushups and we just pushed buttons. He said yes it does, we are both ex Navy, we were on the same team and we walked the rest of the way up the hill together like brothers. This was a really tuff guy built like a bulldog but yet he had a fierce and humble sense of supporting a team member even if he was just a skinny ex navy radarman.

One of the good things about being an American, is knowing that if you ever get captured like that, whether they are able to pull it off or not, there are men like this man, who are planning and trying to figure out how to come get you, and will pull out all of the stops to do so. I think just knowing that would help me get through something like that.

What an immensely eloquent and modest warrior this interviewee is! That these highly trained and experienced men were prepared to enter the enemy camp in order to rescue an American Doctor being held captive, in the full knowledge that they may be killed, wounded or captured is utterly remarkable! Chief Byers' narrative and the way he tells this mission is riveting and awesome. The men of DEVGRU are amazing. I'm from Coronado and had the privilege of knowing and befriending a SEAL who eventually went on to be a plank owner on SEAL team 6. This was around 1980/81 time frame. I found out later that he was also a member of Gold squadron when he was there. As it turned out, I later became an AFSOC gunship pilot and actually ran into my friend on one of my first combat missions. Although he is no longer with us, he was a great guy and I really miss him. Chief Byers is exactly the type of guy you'd see in SEAL teams and even the guys at Ft. Bragg. Friendly to a fault, intelligent, well spoken, and obviously in tremendous physical shape with endurance that is hard to imagine. Respect and honor these men for keeping our country safe from a lot of evil that would take away our freedom and way of life.

He is an extraordinary man doing things maybe .0001% of the men in the world can do. You have to remember, recall, act, protect and mentally manage a million things while rounds are sometimes impacting the loose parts of your gear. And that is if you are lucky. Chief Byers is a warrior and that means not only the violence we do but switching on compassion when necessary but not letting it wreck you on the spot. Thank you sir, not only for your service to our country but for the telling of your story. Not all SEALS are as humble as you are. Some can't stop bragging about the things they claim to have done. You're the kind of man that deserves to wear the MEDAL OF HONOR. 🇺🇸

Incredible story by a true hero. You, Sir, are the greatest example of a MOH recipient because you understand and convey to the American public that you honor those who were either with you or preceded you. God bless you

There are no words that have the amount of strength or acute definition to describe the amount of envy, respect, & pride I hold for all of you as our American Warriors & modern day Gladiators. It’s beyond astronomical how much appreciation I have for you saviors, conquerors, protectors, knights, & paladins.
