I've had this phone since Jan 2019 (this review was very convincing) and after nearly a year of ownership, I'm still hopelessly in love with it. I couldn't have been more happy with it. The only niggle I have is that, after the update to Android 9 the screen automatic lighting has been maladjusting in low to medium ambient lighting. Eventually, I had to turn off the function.

Totally agree mate. People are mad spending $1k+ on phones when ones like his are available. The flagship specs are total overkill for what most people need in a phone, they get caught up in the marketing and spec sheet and spend way more than they need to. I have a laptop and tablet to do anything more demanding than UKposts and social media anyway. I bought the 4/64 and was so impressed I got the 6/128 as well. Had issues with auto brightness as well so turned it off, no worries. With Nova Launcher it's damn near perfect.

Quite a detailed review. Watching it on my Mi Max 2. Purchased it in September 2017, so it's now about 10 months old. No issues. Love the loud sound. If anything I would complain in the Mi Max 2 is the camera. Hopefully there are now major improvements. Still I would not be removing the Mi Max 2 so soon.

Why I never moved away from my Max 2, once you experience the great battery life it's hard to move away from it, even when I was using flagship phones. The Mix 2S almost replaced it, but no preferred the max 2.

It's also about the aspect ratio, 7" usually meant 16:10 screen, it had significantly larger area than this screen and modern over 20:9 screens with notches are even smaller than that for the same diagonal size.

Plenty of reasons, a big jump from the Max 1 to Max 3 it's cameras will really wow you with the difference. Mines still running fine by the way just a little beat up

yes used the max until the max 2, and now the max 2 until the max 3. Only the honor Note 10 might sway me away to other large phone but I highly doubt it. The max 3 for my needs it looking very good.

Not really worth it unless you plan to multitask a lot or need the extra 64GB storage. I'm ordering the 128GB model in blue as I want the extra RAM to make it as smooth as possible when I run a lot of apps at once and also because I can go over 64GB easy.

A long time ago yes, trouble is my level I don't think is good enough for these videos. Also, the reason is I put [English} in the titles is because normally on a new release phone all the other videos are in other languages hard to find one in English or native English.

9:42 I see you installed the playstore in between shooting this video. Was it hard to get the playstore working or did you simply install some apk and it worked on the first try? If you did can you please share a link to the apk and if not can you make a tutorial video on how to get the playstore working? 10:48 what other important apps will not work (like whatsapp, youtube, etc) 14:44 in this section you talked about the global rom. Do you think it will be available as a update or would we need to do some workaround to get the global rom working? Another question is when do you think the global release will be because xiaomi still didn't tell a release date and my phone broke, but i want to have the luxury of having only stuff preinstalled i want and not needing to work a hour to get everything "globaly".

Great review as usual Chris. Last Spring, I bought the mi max 2 based on your reviews. I am very satisfied with the phone. It has all the qualities you have mentioned in your reviews. The camera is no very good but this not a priority for me. I would love to see a recommendation if the owners of max 2 should be considering upgrading to max 3.

At the end it was really a recommendation. I said this will be my new main phone. Replacing my Max 2. So far the step up in performance and cameras (espcially the cameras) has me keepign this for sure. So far it's really the perfect large phone for the price to me. For my own neeeds.

Considering my needs upgrading isn't much a priority Mostly am keen on the even bigger screen(although i prefer the 16:9 scale Mi Max 2 i understand the limitation they had on size when it comes to holding it and keeping such aspect ratio) and the bigger battery and SD card size(previous was supporting 128GB and the 3 is up to 256GB). I care very little about very detailed cameras and i don't need much more power than the Mi Max 2 at the moment really, even though more power is always good. I see myself keeping my Mi Max 2 a little longer and buying the Mi Max 3 some months down the line when the battery of my Mi Max 2 will start really showing it's age. Mi Max 3 is still a must buy replacement though because it really kept everything i loved from Mi Max 2 and improved. The IR blaster(very nice useful thing that i can't for the life of me get why it went out of fashion with many and why it isn't talked about more in phone reviews) is still there the big battery and screen are even bigger and the Sd card still there bigger and better and the double speaker stereo sound also there, so is the headphone jack. It lost nothing from the Mi Max 2, is not like it stop having a headphone jack(coughApplecough) or an SD card or IR blaster etc. everything loved about Mi Max 2 is there which is just awesome.

Haha... feel you with the derision you got while having a phone call with huge phone. When i got my samsung note 2, people around still stuck with blackberry and nokia, so they mocked me with wash board of a phone in my ear. Now since most already embraced big screen phone, guess i'll step up the game and start calling people with my 10 inch galaxy tab a6.

I've been rocking the same gold Mi Max 2 and I love it aside from the huge chin and bezel, bad camera and the mediocre screen, this new version seems to improve on that but I'm sure it'll be hella difficult to get in English yet again. Thanks to your review though I realise maybe I'm better off remaining with the Mi Max 2. What do you think?

It's easy search google in the Mi store, that is the google installer run it and it will install Play for you. Not hard at all. I cut it from the edit as it was too long. That and the fingerprint reader test.

KCZ7 you do know if you have seen the note series that is what the MI max series would be in terms of processor? Sd660 is much more expensive than sd636 and hey you can't have it all in a phone for this price range.

Tuntun AyaTosin its maybe a few dollars more expensive. Phone SOC's arent that expensive. The phone manufacturers just try to charge hundreds of dollars for a better chip. While they only pay a few dollars for such a chip.

I know it will be more expensive but after seeing this review I'm going to wait and see what the Huawei Honor Note 10 is like. It's the same size, similar battery but has Amoled panel and a few other higher specs...... It will be announced on 31st July so excellent timing for us big phablet lovers.

Yes lucky well these screens all vary from unit to unit every so slightly.

or maybe because you have a black one, the shadows on the edge of the screen merge with the body color of the smartphone, so it looks as if there is no shadow 😁

Guacamole Work that's certainly plausible, but I just tested the idea by putting white paper on the top and bottom and I still don't see anything. I do however have one dead pixel right at the top of the screen so I guess I'm not that lucky 😅.

Well I'm the other lucky one I guess. No issue at all with my Mi max 2 screen. Although I did dipped the phone to oil based mixture (salsa verde) when I was cooking 😅. Tried to open it with suction cup (after released 2 T4 screws near charger port), and had to replace the buzzer which I ordered from eBay.

I have my MiMax 1 for sometime and still loving it thanks to your original review. The cameras are still good when complimented with good editing apps. I was hoping that 3 would be slimmer and more refined. Definitely going to check it out. Thanks.
