I don´t know if I got them all but here´s the list: 1) Don´t eat what your grandmother wouldn´t recognize. 2) Don´t eat foods with more than five ingredients. 3) Avoid foods that never rot. 4) Eat all your meals at a table. 5) Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored. 6) Stop eating before you´re full.

Womble Robert YES!! I do any "aisle shopping" online and do skirt the outer edges of the supermarket in person - that way I protect myself against impulse purchases and marketing schemes. Another thing to do is reduce tv and other forms of exposure to advertisements- I noticed that since living tv-free for the last 2 or 3 years advertisements don't "work" on me any more...

I grew up in farm country. I know the difference between caring, conscientious small operation farmers and abusive, greedy **small and large operation** farmers and large scale industrial farmers with no conscience. I was never brainwashed by the industrial food movement, and what's called "farming" today, industrial farming, isn't - it's only existed around 100 years, and is machining, not farming. I began my "new" food regimen based on humane and conscientious farmers and farming. It's called "organic" today - but I don't just go by that word. I live in a city now, but I've reconnected with local farmers and farms (partially through farmers markets, partially through my animal rescue volunteer work). I visit the farms, I know who's growing and caring for my food. By doing this, I accidentally fell within every single high nutrition and quality food parameter. When you find farmers who are conscientious in how they care for their gardens and their animals, they will also be conscientious in caring about **what goes into your body**. It's worth the work. Those who don't care about the animals - don't give a flyin F about you either. And, because I've cut out the middle man - I actually save money. My favorite plus - I don't pay money for people to abuse and torture animals. I my money directly to people who love their animals and gardens and take beautiful care of them. I'm also continuing my research into balanced use of these foods - but my common sense from my childhood 5 decades ago proved true through all the extremes of the 80's, 90's, and 2000's. Not only for me, but for my pets as well. One of my best mantra's - "Extremes are almost never the answer". Another best mantra: Cruel treatment of animals leads to cruel treatment of humans. And yes, we can absolutely drink milk and eat eggs, butter and cheese from happy farm animals. I know - I've personally collected from and cared for the happy animals, who are literally wagging tails and feathers while I do it. I refuse to support the unhappy farms. I well know what both look like. Back to our best roots, kudos to Mr. Pollan, and marvelous ideas below as well.

@debbimorgon2988

Why should we drink cows milk? It’s meant for the baby cow. Babies get their milk from their mother. Eggs hatch baby chickens why should we eat them? Studies show you can stop and restart cancer by stopping and restarting foods from animals. But what the heck, cancer isn’t very common and you can always get chemotherapy.
@Bubbaluv8
@Bubbaluv8 2 роки тому
@@debbimorgon2988 My comment was worded intelligently, respectfully, genuinely, and factually. I have no clue why you feel the need to reply with sarcasm or rudeness. If avoiding eggs and cows milk leads to bitterness and sarcasm - I'll stick with my quiche. Milk and eggs were staples of the human diet for all of recorded human history - thousands of years before cancer became so prevalent. The hormones, chemicals, and pesticides being added to animal and other products is definitely new - and high among the factors contributing to the extreme rise in cancer. The long history of milk, eggs, cheese and butter *does not* parallel the known history of cancer. The modern history of chemicals and pesticides polluting our environment and food absolutely *does* parallel the modern rise in cancer. Is your comment out of concern for health? Then by all means avoid milk and eggs if you believe they're the problem. Do you care about animals? I've personally cared for and paid for the health and well being of hundreds of happy farm animals - who I see and know - for decades. How many farm animals are you personally keeping healthy and happy? Directly supporting good farms is supporting happy animals. Good health to you, you can state your case without rudeness, please learn to be kinder.

Make your own yoghurt! It is so cheap, easy and delicious - and healthy :-) Start with actually buying some natural yoghurt - one with no sugar and does contain lactobacillus. Heat fresh milk (not UHT stuff) to just under boiling, (180F) leave it at that temperature for 15-30 mins. Cool it to around 110F if you have a thermometer, add and stir around 3 tbsp of the yoghurt, wrap in blankets with a couple of hot water bottles, let it sit keeping warm and still for 7-8 hours. It will look solid with yellow-green fluid on top, Either spoon some of that off for the dog, who loves it, or stir, put in fridge overnight, and enjoy!! (Sarah Slade)

Cow Milk products are clearly not good for the human body, not even self-made Yoghurt though it’s much better than sugar laden fruit yoghurts. Really healthy and also pro-biotic are those made of soy milk and/or nut milks such as almond milk. If you want to make it yourself, follow same process as for self-made yoghurts, by replacing cow milk with vegan milk

Notably missing in the comparison of Western vs. traditional diets is a discussion about sedentary vs. active lifestyle. I kept waiting for this to be brought up but it never did for some reason. All those traditional hunter societies feature an incredible amount of daily physical activity while the Western daily pattern of moving between different chairs throughout the day also directly affects obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Good talk though, he's a great speaker.

“We have always assumed that our ancestors spent their days running around hunting and gathering and this constant activity kept them fit and lean. When I spent a week with the Hadza tribe in Tanzania, the last hunter-gatherers of East Africa, I was surprised. They seemed to be as lazy as us Westerners. They usually have a lie-in, and most of the day they hang around chatting with each other and only go as far as they need to get food, which, as most of the year it is plentiful, is not very far. A team of researchers put activity trackers on them for eleven days as well as measuring their metabolic rates while resting and exercising. They confirmed that they are sedentary for most of the time, walking 4-6 km a day and on average don’t expend more calories on physical activity than Westerners. Their resting metabolic rate was also similar to Westerners. The reason they are lean is thanks to their diverse high-fibre, berry and meat diet, not eating much, and avoiding snacks, rather than religiously doing 10,000 steps per day.” - Tim Spector, “Spoonfed”

I completely agree with the way you’re thinking about the juxtaposition between disparity and production. The next questions follow then, though: Do we want to condemn people to making below a living wage for backbreaking now industrialized work that exposes them to insane amounts of pesticides and other biochemicals? Wouldn’t a better solution be to incentivize a more sustainable system of food production to begin with? Surely this would attract a new generation of farmers in and of itself.

Great speech. People should also take their time eating and chew their food well. People are in a rush to eat because of their busy schedules. This also increases cortisol when contributes to weight gain. GMO corn seeds contain roundup which is proven as a carcinogen. Not to mention GMOs are illegal in a lot of countries. More people are starting to grow their own food because they don't trust commercial food products.

"It's ok to be hungry.". Hunger is normal, not an emergency . If you are every time you were hungry you'd be eating all the time. Hunger helped early humans eat as much as they could as often as they could. Today, you aren't gonna die if you wait until dinner rather than eat on the bus ride home.

I think the major take away message from this speech could be that one of the main impacts of foods is its psychological impact, which is actually the most useful and efficacious and actually one of the most profound effects of food . So inspirational! The way the system functions is failing us all, GMOs have not improved the food chain for the needs of anyone. The food regulations has failed dramatically, regulating what???? The Health system in my opinion is never addressing the root causes of diseases, nor addressing the immune system! Holistic approach is frowned upon due to the mainstream system having a monopoly on the populations staying diseased ridden! The whole system is failing the whole worlds prosperity! Namaste!

Eat a pound of vegetables a day from food that is well grown. Buy Organic or R.G.B.H. free Milk from cows that have not been shot up with growth hormones and that are grass feed. Grass feed beef and grass fed chickens. Animals eating grass in a pasture have benefits. Make a decision to be a conscious eater.

Beta carotene rich diets have been proven to reduce lung and other cancers... even to the point that high levels of beta carotene actually have lowered the risk of lung cancer in smokers to that of a non-smoker. The body needs the vital nutrients to fight the mechanics of cancer-- but it's a complex system that includes such factors as the PH of water one drinks and the relative volume of fresh fruits and vegetables. Proper PH levels can work to block and destroy cancer.

The points made are really a mixture of valid and jumbled. For one thing most people did not turn to low fat they continued to give into Ronald McDonald. Also is pure weight the test, many American males are dedicated to increasing muscle mass, which increases weight whilst increasing health, generally. Also people didn't voluntarily choose to take more sugar, those who saw the need to reduce fat, they were tricked into it by food fabricators. Low fat was on the label but high sugar not.

True. But just missed a practical conclusion! Stick to the food of a locale. Preferably the one into which you are born in. (Excluding the unfortunate ones who were born into a cosmopolitan culture!) Never mix foods from different cultures/region. Because the food also has got evolution. The local food and the humans in that enviro has developed together for thousands of years. You will find the checks and balances mostly unsaid and inherent in the regional foods taken together. When you mix all these are getting upset. The western (American for example) food is a mixture of food from different cultures and that is its defect!

Out of the ones I listened to which I found inspired and were great, this one I like the least. A little too much knocking on science here. And I know Mckenna used to do it (I don't know if Pollan heard of him, but they share some philosophical ideas) but Mckenna was more convincing about it. Nutrition isn't something that I think of as a cultural practice. Fast food is our culture, it literally is our culture, and that should not guide us. Drinking beer is part of our culture, but it's a horrible idea. Comparing nutritionists to a priesthood is a horrible analogy.

Get rid of Social Programs. Get out of wars. And help people grow their own food. End the Fed, IRS, VOTE Libertarian. I agree. Nothing will change with Romney nor Obama.....just business as usual. T

Replace food with political ideas and we're still stuck, less by our understanding of a subject and more by the shortcomings in human behavior, by this desire to create super-goods and super-bads. We need a good old fashioned species-wide brainwashing to help develop our critical thinking.

Why should we drink cows milk? It’s meant for the baby cow. Human Babies drink their mothers milk. . Eggs hatch baby chickens, why should we eat them? Studies show you can stop and start cancer by stopping and starting foods from animals. But what the heck, Cancer isn’t very common and you can always get chemotherapy!! Best Wishes!! ❤️❤️

Eggs aren't all fertilized, plus they reduce cancer risk by 30%. Animal flesh has been eaten by humans for all of time, thinking we're herbivores is dillusional and deadly

We never went low fat. We went from high fat to still high fat but a little bit less. High fat is a killer in that it interferes with oxygen transport and fuel uptake. By the way, cows milk is not a human food including yogurts. Cows milk is a product of tremendous cruelty to animals. Its main protein is is very difficult for a majority of people to digest. It’s excess mucus creating besides containing growth hormones that encourage cancer and excess weight gain. Processed/pasteurized milk would not keep a healthy calf alive because it’s dead and its nutrients are damaged or destroyed by heat Basically it’s a disease causing food for humanity. If you wish to be truly healthy, what I would call paradise health, please check out the amazing book, “the 80/10/10 diet“ by Dr. Douglas Graham.

Bull-ogna. I'm insulin resistant. I lost my muscle mass, facial symmetry, and other forms of balance from that wackiness. Run from the plant diet.
