As humans, we need interconnection: We rely on others to survive, especially as children. Yet, we also strive for authenticity. This creates an inherent tension.
In this lesson, Dr. Maté discusses what is true human nature - and how the modern world has warped our understanding of our needs.

@Ariel Goldfarb I have tried that, to a certain degree, for years, and it does help, but like you said, it feels like "killing yourself to live", which happens to be the title of a Black Sabbath tune. Now, I'm doubling down on it with increased intensity. For me, personally, it seems the correct route because I've been overly open and vulnerable for many years. Good luck !!!!

Yup, it was never "normal." many societies were built on blood and then rewrote history to make themselves seem like the "good" guys. there may have been a select few societies that were spiritually elevated, but most others were (and are) fundamentally flawed, and people just forced themselves to deal with it.

@@rachelsimbhu3965 Many of the issues of modern culture are dependent on the internet, social media, etc. If you spent a day disconnected, you'd find that life is pretty lowkey compared to what's happening online. People don't bicker in person like they do online. People don't proclaim their political beliefs from their rooftops with a megaphone, but that's what Twitter is essentially. With a few Karen exceptions, we're pretty civil in a cashier's line or a movie theater or a restaurant. @Donovan I came back for my family. My time there was priceless, but staying would have come at a cost. However, my well being is always compromised here. I believe it is for us all, though few are willing to do anything about it. I plan to make my own permanent escape in time. It comes with careful planning. I am not a consumer here. I live on little, and at times have saved 50% of my income through careful money management. The pandemic as well as a natural disaster validated that what we possess is finite. It has little value in our lives. We are surviving on steroids. Taking more than we need is also taking our souls.

It is normal now for people to be cruel and dismissive of one another. It breaks my heart each and everyday. I make it my goal everyday to be authentic, to be kind and understanding of others even when they behave like morons. It’s sad to see how unhappy people are, that they think it’s ok to treat others harshly and without respect. I can only try and live by example and continue to treat others the way I would like to be treated. Unfortunately those who have been hurt become bitter and what follows is anger towards others, it’s a vicious circle unfortunately ❤

Kim that's NZ. It's not the world. NZ is super brutal and I am a Kiwi. Have you lived in other countries? I live in Ecuador atm abd being kind and loving is the rule, not the exception here. NZ is so bad because they got rid of christian values Kiwi's allow bullies and tyrants to hurt others. This is weak and part of the problem. Part of authenticity is fighting back and retaliation for unprovoked attacks. Most Kiwis would rather suppress their negative emotions and take the abuse and "not make a fuss" even if children are being bullied by mum and dad to the point they want to self delete... whuch is happening in my NZ family. I am kind and respectful to everyone. If you insult or mock me I will hit back and teach you a lesson. Your society is a catastrophe: brutal psychopaths on the one hand and kind nice people but with no balls or courage who think being peaceful to not oppose bullying and violence is the right thing to do.

But your comment and this video gave me a realization: bullies and tyrants TRAIN and encourage a culture of pacifism to enable and sustain their violence and abuse. Be kind but take no s%$t. NAP 1st (non aggression principle)... first do no harm... Then, if you are attacked, you are cleared to use the SDP (self defence principle). "We lived as hunter/gatherer clans" is exactly the key. Back almost 60 years ago, I worked for almost 3 years straight in remote areas in Tanzania that still more or less lived like that. There would be small village groups, maybe 50-100 people. Their day to day lives were further divided into 3 sub groups. The women all worked together and socialized as they worked, the men the same hunting parties etc and the children hung around/played together in a big group which includes barely walking toddlers to teenagers. Despite abject poverty, they were all always happy and smiling. No wonder they had the group support all day long. Also no mental health issues. Modern society has drifted a long, long way from that.

They will march and shout the dumbest slogans as if they are the words of gods and throw out their brains in the interests of a kinder, gentler, cleaner, smarter, wiser world because some charismatic loud mouthed dickhead has told them this is as it is. It makes progress difficult when you give ammunition to your enemies for free. Yes, I agree with you. I think trauma and disconnection are at the root of that too though. Narcissism isn't actually self-love / self-respect. Because if we want to truly flourish, we also need a healthy environment and the people around us to be flourishing too. It's circular. Healthy communities are comprised of healthy individuals and healthy individuals come from healthy communities. The woundedness and sense of separation are what allow people to believe their actions don't actually harm them too. I don't have the answers, except to work on my own healing, which I believe has a ripple effect, model integrity, support others in wellbeing, and to not support organizations that promote unhealthy paradigms / perspectives. I'm also vocal about trauma awareness and emotional intelligence/regulation. But I believe we need a collective paradigm shift, for the masses to wake up. Until that happens, hurt people will hurt people, and the cycles will continue. I do believe whole people heal people. Is there enough individual healing taking place? Will it reach a tipping point? I hope so.

Had an encounter today at my grocery store and it left me shook. There was a small child standing in the Candy/chip isle....just standing there and she looked emaciated and she was holding up a plastic grocery bag up to her mouth and she was dry heaving in to the bag. She was only wearing thin pj's and I was alarmed to see her in such a state and no adult around to comfort her. I immediately went to her and knelt down and put my hand on her hot, feverish back. I could feel her bones..she was skeletal. I asked her if she needed help, if I could help her, and offered to get her a drink of water, to which she nodded her head. But then I looked up and a woman appeared to say she's the child's parent. All I could do was walk away in shock and anguish and everyone else who witnessed it just acted like that is normal. You also forgot to read “and offered to get her a drink of water..” she didn’t GET the water! Offering is different than getting and this person left as soon as the parent came! What happened to the water? Never gotten for the kid! Read everything in the encounter post NOT cherry pick! Offering someone help is different than GIVING IT! She left as soon as the child’s mother appeared! What was she so afraid of! Being told my kid is none of your business?? “All I could do was walk away..” she could’ve stayed and GIVEN that offered water and chastised the parent for the horrible condition her kid was in but she didn’t! I HAVE helped people! ALL the way! I wouldn’t have just offered that child water I would’ve GIVEN IT! I wouldn’t have walked away when the mother appeared! By the way I prevented a break in where a woman and her child were screaming in terror! I didn’t say oh poor them! It didn’t matter that I never saw them or knew them! He could’ve taken away the rake I held at my side but didn’t! And the lady who invited me said it was none of my business! I hear screaming from inside a house you bet it’s my business to stop a break in from whom I later learned was the woman’s boyfriend. He didn’t intimidate me one bit. A six footer of mad, with me only four foot nine didn’t stop me from preventing him from getting in! Don’t you lecture ME, azizalfa752! No approaching parent would’ve stopped me GIVING water! I would’ve slammed her verbally for the condition of her child! Wouldn’t have cared what she thought! A friend of mine years ago came to me for help being in a domestic violence situation! I didn’t just offer to talk to him, whom I knew, who knew better to put his hands against me as we dated and he knew I would’ve hit back, I DID talk to him! I didn’t care that he said it was none of my business. A friend came for help and I helped NOT OFFERED, I DID help! He never laid hands against her again and she left him because I helped! You’re right! Most wouldn’t try! But you do more than try, you DO! And I have! So spare me your self righteous phony anger at me! I have helped! Have YOU ever? Or do you change your mind like this person did once the parent shows up! You don’t offer water, you GIVE it! Points go to DOING not offering! I’d help anyone who needed it, not offer and walk away. I’d even help you! But you’d never appreciate it but it wouldn’t matter! I don’t walk away!

When I hear this man talk about it being loved for just being you and not having to work for it, it makes me sigh a sigh of validation. I can't help but reflect of how much sustained discomfort and anxiety I have had do to feeling behind and not good enough. Its really terrible what we do as a culture to ourselves by turning the workforce into this thing that we must neglect our personal well being to do in order to survive. When I was a teenager, still existing in that ethemeral chaos of mind, I was walking with my Dad one day. He was already 70. He had me late in life in his mid 50's. He knew everything, was a voice of pure reason. No personal ambitions or goals were voiced by him, he existed ONLY for others and to remind them of what was right, or wrong. That day when we were walking home from the town, we stopped - cos HE stopped - to help a group of young guys pushing a car. He was far too old to be pushing a car. So I took over. Helped these kids push the car to jump start it. It was then I realized, they were thieves, had taken off the registration plates and were boosting the car. Too late, I was in the middle of it, and I got the job done. Later I told him what had happened, he'd read the situation wrong. BUT he was always of the mentality, throughout his entire years he was here, of " If people need help, YOU HELP! You are okay! You are fine! Tall, strong, good looking, nothing wrong with you! So don't ever WORRY about yourself! HELP! If you can help! Otherwise you're a burden. ". So there are great people. And even great people make mistakes. But tomorrow, they will still be great. I've had to learn to feel better about myself even as my physical abilities decreased. I'm convinced I healed so well because my emotional state improved. Over 7 years since coming very close to dying, despite chronic pain & permanent disability, I'm more content than ever in my life. I've learned to find value in my being instead of my doing. And I can’t say I like the change. :( not a good environment for introverts. 😢 And I just had to say what I’m sure has been said: I’m in total awe of this laid-back, brilliant man.

I didn't think it likely but he was right though it took a lot longer, like decades, than he was thinking, but he would've had nicer families in mind, assumed mine were sentimental about their kids like that. I was born and raised in Italy, constantly bombarded on the media about how things in europe are always better and more advanced than other countries... but somehow i always felt there was something deeply wrong with this statement, at least for the context i grew up in many things didnt match: i was feeling stressed and anxious and, more than anything, i felt deeply abandoned and unheard, so i started keeping my emotions to myself, thinking since everything around me, family especially, said that everything was good, then i was the one in the wrong side. I blamed myself for feeling bad, belittled my feelings and a series of other things that eventually brought me to have a lot of suicidal thoughts. Finally i found some people like me, who made me understand that the problem is not us, but the society we are brought up in which has absolutely 0 understanding of nowadays problems and 0 will to even try to create a discussion for the matter. I just feel we have to destroy everything and rebuild a new society from 0.

Many People can Talk and many People can good Talk ,but that what the People makes ,that is then often not Compatible with the Words, or with the Message from the People. The People say I like That but ,many People makes more a Show or many People can we then Later see as a very Paradox Person. The People makes not all the Same good work with the good Information and that makes the Situation on many Places not better. The Human is a Learning disabled Life form and the Human has to much Problems with his Bad Cognitive Abilitis and that makes the Damage in the Nature Visible. Gabor is one of the most compassionate individuals still surviving. His comprehension of natural being and the detrimental effects of modernity and fashion is exceptional. With men like Gabor I can feel fear lift and represents the reincarnation of very ancient principles and requires only to be respected. I visited Vashem in Israel and was in tears until I came out to a vista of a wooded valley outside the mausoleum. Thank-you Sir for your contribution to mankind and my salvation from loneliness until this experience I was subject to a malignancy from others. So much in fact that I did feel traumatised and only through my faith in Christ did I achieve some respite. I live alone with a dog and don't entertain company with others. I don't write anymore other than statements on utube. I'm glad at heart to know I'm not alone and want nothing. I look forward to joining those who lost their lives during tragedy. Sure they will still lie about you if you avoid them but there is nothing you can do about people that are not even interested in the facts or truth of things. I think much of it is immaturity also if they behave like gossipy 10 th graders but they will also demand you dumb down to their level they are not willing to evolve themselves. They demand constant conflict and drama so people live in fight or flight mode and you can't really adapt to that long term it's just exhausting physically emotionally spiritually.

The division between mind and heart is our greatest source of fear and pain. All decisions and actions that are made without heart, be it personal or global, hurt us in some way and bring about deep feelings of unsafety. This pain and fear lives deep in our human experience and has its effect on our cells and energy systems. And it brings about unconcious guilt because deep in our being we also know something is terribly wrong. Jung already explained that the unconcious mind is mostly a shared mind. We influence each other from that collective mind. And that is where we have hidden our human shadows. Energy healing shows me that our energy systems are interconnected and we absorbe others energy in our systems all the time. That is how baby's take on their parents shit. Our hearts are known to be the path to our human connectivity. Hearts are the pathway to connection. Healing without heart is totally ineffective because it fails to cure the seperation. Hence the ineffectiveness of most healing systems. We need to bring our heart in our relationships because healing needs connection. Being with yourself and the other in your heart makes us authentic ❤️ Gabor is living that 🙏🏼
