TEDx Talks

With comedy, you not only laugh but you also gain understanding in a unique way. Comedy has a setup and then a punch line. The setup moves the audience in one direction-toward what is expected. The punch line occurs when you change direction and take the audience to the unexpected. This same process can be applied to life. Comedian Michael Jr. shows how to take your life's setups and then change direction in a way that brings fulfillment, revelation, and joy not only to you but also to those around you.
Once in a generation, a comedian comes along who speaks to everyone. Today, that comedian is known simply as Michael Jr.
Watch him onstage and you’ll see a man at ease…with himself, his audience, and his message. Listen to his voice and you’ll detect a comfortable, conversational style that hides a sly sense of mischief. Hear his words and you’ll laugh at the universal themes that connect us all.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

@sottygodffrey4726

Michael Jr. your message was spot on!! I opened a Clinic (2017 in a rural town in Kenya called Mbita) to practice medicine with the main aim being to earn a living and support my family. At some point, I realized some patients (mostly women) couldn't afford to pay their bills. At first it didn't bother me much,but one time a similar patient came (severely ill), I attended to her and stabilized her. After the service, she couldn't afford to pay a penny. I got a bit disturbed,but before letting her go, I asked her why she couldn't pay even some part of the fee..her answer was "my son, my kids and I haven't had food for days now because I have been sick,today I just had to come for treatment although I didn't have any money. If I don't get well, my kids won't have anyone to take care of them. So just help me and I'll come and clear the bill later". Her answer hit me hardest.. It reminded me how much my widowed mother suffered with me and my six other siblings and how we could go without food for days, affording aspirin was unimaginable. I treated the woman and let her go, my conscience couldn't let her pay. A month later, I had set up a program that provide free healthcare to vulnerable/needy widows and orphans, and it runs till today,and has over 50 women and kids. I always thought I couldn't do it,but it's almost 5 years now. Every time I go to sleep, I always pray that I finally have the Clinic grow to a bigger hospital and have most of the manual jobs and clerical works done by the widows as a way of empowering them economically. I always pray to meet like minded people who could help support this course.

Michael Jr. because of your message, I've changed the goal of my music from 'how can I get the audience to love me?' to 'how can I give people an opportunity to sing / make or bring music into their lives.' Thank you Michael Jr. for being a 'CLEAN' comedian. In my opinion, a clean comedian has to be, and is "FAR" more talented than the ones that have to rely on bad language. You are funny, thought provoking, and an out right pleasure to watch. It's been years since I've been able to laugh, because I refuse to listen to filth. I'm 55, and was sad because it seemed as though clean comedy had disappeared. Again, thank you, and to be sure, I will look for you to cheer me up. God Bless :-)

Esther Centineo Hahaha....so you think talent hangs upon the language the comedian uses and how you judge and react to that language and that’s how you interpret things? Interesting. 😂 Do you suppose the one who created language can be offended by its own creation/expression? How does “foul” language sound to you from that perspective? You are the only one who defines every word you speak and hear. You are making a choice to let words emotionally impact you. What are words? They are symbols made of letters and letters are made of lines. They are absolutely nothing and they are meaningless to YOU until decide what they mean. You may agree with defining them as others do but there are many words you use that not everyone understands them how you do. That’s because we all decide what things mean to ourselves and we define all things including defining things that we take offense to. No one iz doing anything to you but if you think they can then you will likely embody the personality and behavior you think they are and project that psychologically upon them then claim you’ve been victimized by the very one you tried to victimized which hopefully they already know better. Many don’t know it yet, and these often will teach their kids to see themselves and others as victims.

This is so amazing. I understand my punchline but now I understand what my set up was. It's so true. To be clear I do hair for a living, but that's not how I view it. I make people love themselves and feel beautiful. I think they're beautiful before I do whatever it is they want. But I just make them see them self how I do! But my set up was I couldn't do my own hair through school and used to get made fun of because of my hair texture and the way it looked... now, haha that's what I do for a living. Lol. I love making people smile and knowing that they feel good about themself.

I chose to listen to this for some laughs, but the story about Ronan really touched me and I teared up. Thank you for the message of your setup being important, but having a punchline being ever more important! I have to be honest, you put some things into perspective for me. Currently, I am 45 years old, and my setup is pretty successful. I've been married for 23 years, have two amazing children and a job that pays me well. With that being said, my other true passion in life is volunteering at the local middle school providing mentorship for young men and women from tough backgrounds, trying to provide them with a positive role model that they can reach out to for conversation or whatever it is that helps them in this journey called life. I love doing it and today I realized that is my punchline!

My name is Renato Galdino, from Brazil and I had the privilege of watching you at the Summit in Chicago I guess 3 years in a row...I sat right beside you on a Wednesday night...The pre-service... You are a terrific person and I am so proud of you...you broke the paradigm of telling jokes with dirty vocabulary...You honor the Lord Jesus! What you said is life-challenging and I will apply into my English classes in order to bring the students to the next level of their lives. God bless you brother!

Not just good job bro, but THANK YOU. Thank you so much. In a world where we ask for different forms of representation in media, your message of giving is the first I’ve been impacted by. Know that your message is playing a part in propelling me to my punchline. If we’re ever in the same green room together I’ll bring this comment to your attention 😉 Be blessed and stay blessed 🙏🏿

Several commented “How could you not like this talk ?” I think the real question is - “How could you not love this man ?” Michael is a class act and I don’t mean his show. In less than 20 minutes, this man managed to touch the lives and hearts of everyone in the theatre and then reached straight out to us. Tell me you weren’t affected. I sure was. Thanks for sharing this touching message ! 🎭

To hear an established, popular comedian be so genuinely grateful for a standing ovation makes me want to show my appreciation more often for people who put effort into doing things well, even the people who I assume are confident in their abilities. Everyone needs to hear they're doing a good job. Though clearly unplanned it was a great way to punctuate a great message.

Hello Michael Jr, I love comedy & your explanation of how it works is fantastic! Life has been uncomfortable for me for sometime now; however, your explanation about the setup & the punchline help me to see that I to have been trying to add more setup. My pray is that God removes my "when then" thinking and opens my eyes to my life's punchline so that I may deliver: joy, peace, love, laughter, hope inspiration, etc... Thanks Michael Jr. you're making a difference.
