My fish tank exploded filled with fish almost exactly a year ago!!! This was probably the worst experience I’ve had in this hobby and something most people fear the most when you’re in this hobby. Sorry it’s not the best footage this all happened before I had a channel and before I was filming for UKposts these are just personal memories.. I hope this NEVER happens to anyone else in the hobby, and I hope my video gives you some knowledge on the subject🙏🏼 #fishtankexplosion #shatteredfishtank #fishtankexplodes

Yikes!!! This is why we don't remove the rims off these tanks. The rims are important. Rimless tanks are better off as acrylic tanks so that this doesn't happen. Thankfully you saved your fish and bounced back.
@havik3420
@havik3420 2 роки тому
I was wondering about that. I can't tell if he cut the rim off and tried to euro brace it like a rimless or if that was an actual rimless that he moved the fish to from the standard rimmed tank. I think it had to do with the pressure of the clip he was using. not 100 percent sure just guessing.
@NinjaSushi2

There's plenty of things that are designed to be rimless that aren't acrylic and can hold a hundred gallons or more. The difference is that these tanks are designed to be rimless from the start.

Rimless tanks are beautiful and the ones designed to be rimless don't bust like this because they come with much thicker glass. Those with rims use thinner glass which aren't strong enough on their own to support all that water weight and pressure. That's why they require extra support that shouldn't be removed. Best option is to buy a true rimless tank which costs more.

I’ve derimmed 3 tanks. 2 20gallons and 1 33 long. Only the 33 long has a 4” glass brace for precautionary purposes. Anything higher than 12” needs a brace. If it’s under you’re fine.

The solution is to support the tank at the top centre-middle part back to front. ( instead of the end of the tank as you can see on the video. The glass did break exactly at the middle part where there was no support. That middle section has the most amount of pressure. Lesson learnt thx for sharing ;)

the glass is too thin to be rimless, if you check out those designed to be rimless tanks, the size of glass usually go thicker when the tank goes wider, this can be a problem with acrylic too fracture then crack, but seldom it will explode, unless its an old acrylic tank that had been exposed to UV light for long term.

A while back I also bought a similar tank to your 55 gallon with the brown trim. Mine had the center brace broken. I wanted to see what would happen if I filled it with water. At first everything was looking normal, but when the tank was 3/4 of the way full I started to see the actual front and back panel starting to bow out. I quickly emptied the tank before it broke the glass. I ended up having to replace all the trim on the tank. I never realized how much pressure is placed on the glass panels of an aquarium.

I put a 75 gallon on what I thought to be a strong enough dresser. While I was filling I heard the dresser let out some crazy popping noises. I instantly realized I was moments away from a failure. So got out every syphon hose I own and was able to get the tank empty in minutes. Luckily the dresser didn’t completely fail and I was able to get my tank installed In the wall underneath my tv and it’s been there for over a year thriving. We definitely have all made some bad judgment calls it’s all about learning from them. Glad you saved your fish that’s what’s important.

I was going to start with what kind of idiot takes a rim off but I thought about it and realized how hypocritical that would be. I never took a rim off of a tank but I am sure we all (I certainly have) have made some bonehead mistakes of one kind or another. If I had a dollar for every time I was doing water changes and forgot my Python NO SPILL Clean and Fill was filling and overflowing onto the floor because I got distracted, I could probably buy another fish. The time my aquarium heater stopped working and rather than pay the high price at the local pet shop and waited for one to be shipped because it cost me half as much wasn't a genius decision either. If we learn from our mistakes they are valuable later on. I try never to be distracted when doing water changes now, and I keep a couple of extra heaters around, these are just two examples of stupid mistakes I have made in 35 years of keeping fish tanks. I think my worst mistakes have been impulse buying things I don't need or at an auction buying fish super cheap but they don't belong in any of my tanks. I am happy to see one disaster didn't take you out of the game, I have bought many used tanks from people who gave up rather than learn and enjoy the hobby.

That sucks! I bought a used 75G Oceanic tank a long time ago (like 16 years ago), moved with it from California to TX, and it's still going strong. Oceanic built some of the best fish tanks ever. Super thick glass too. Subscribed. Yeah, taking off the rim probably weakened the structure. My tank has that structure and would never remove it. I did it with my Nancube 28G, but that is a much smaller tanks, and it is curved. That was a PITA to do though

@stianandreassen3903
@stianandreassen3903 2 роки тому
It could also very well be because you took the bottom rim off, not the top. The top should be OK since you added the glass (unless the glass thickness is very thin and its a wide tank. There are calculators for this online where you enter height + length and it shows you what glass thickness you need to have). Did you have a foam pad under the tank after you took it off? Also, it looks like the tank is not centered on the stand, and the left side is hanging off the side a little bit. Actually, it looks like the tank is hanging over on the front left side, and the right back side like the stand is either not square or the tank isnt centered front to back or left to right. Did you treat the stand with waterproof paint or something similar? Just a tiny drop on untreated wood it enough to make it warp just enough to crack a tank, and not necessarily the bottom pane. Rimless tanks needs a pad, tanks with a plastic rim do not as the bottom of the tank is raised cause of the rim. So, it could still be your stand unless its super smooth and 100% level in all directions

I have a custom 48x16x16. Very thick glass at 3/8th of an inch. Pretty much the minimum thickness and safety factor for rimless. Anything taller would get into the zone where you need to brace the top.

It blew out the bottom part where the presure was. See, you didnt put a centre support, and so the middle flexed and it broke from the weakest place, you can go see where the cracks started. A centre support is the most important to keep the glass from flexing.

Good video. Cheaper tanks are manufactured with glass that is thinner than the required glass thickness. basically, the thickness requirement of the glass goes up with the height and the length of the tank sides, assuming the user will fill it almost all the way up. All the pressure of the water is directed outwards and is most likely to cause damage in the center and the continuous plastic bracing provides that support in the center. This is why it is never a good idea to remove bracing on the cheaper generic fish tanks, without a good alternate bracing in the center of the tank. In this case, an additional glass brace in the center would have mitigated the risk of damage. The money saved on a used tank is not worth the risk of flooding your home, losing precious fish, and also possibly injuring little ones and pets in the family.

Good advice. that should be 6mm you should have at least 8mm for that length. I have a 29 g 70cm wide and it is barely curved. In this case it is because of the length, the pressure of the water goes to the center of the glass and bends it. If you had a more square shaped probably that would not happen :D Nice video hope all fishes are secured. pd. edit. that is without any support at all at the top completely rimless.
