NASA is getting ready to send astronauts to explore more of the Moon as part of the Artemis program, and the agency has selected SpaceX to continue development of the first commercial human lander that will safely carry the next two American astronauts to the lunar surface.
The agency’s powerful Space Launch System rocket will launch four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft for their multi-day journey to lunar orbit. There, two crew members will transfer to the SpaceX human landing system (HLS) for the final leg of their journey to the surface of the Moon. After approximately a week exploring the surface, they will board the lander for their short trip back to orbit where they will return to Orion and their colleagues before heading back to Earth.

This is a HUGE surprise to me. I had figured SpaceX to be the 2nd runner-up in a lander program with Starship, with Bezos' lobbying and Dynetics Lander being a close tie to get the contract. Starship as a lander was a pipe dream in my eyes. I am SO happy for SpaceX!

My initial thought is that NASA choosing SpaceX for Artemis is surprising to hear, but when I thought about it a little I realized SpaceX is one of the most vetted and trusted orbital launch company at this point. Nasa has been using them for CRS and now for crew missions and even if starship is a new rocket, by 2024 they would be tested much more than either of the other launch vehicles. What is perhaps more surprising is that they only chose SpaceX instead of 2 options, and at this point I am wondering if Elon didn't just tell NASA that if they are not the sole choice, they would be landing on landing pad with SpaceX's logo on it, next to a starship with SpaceX crew waving at them.

Though the NASA document mentioned that, they also mentioned that if they had chosen Blue Origin as the best choice for the HLS they would be able to renegotiate that bid to include NASA's requirements. I've been (frankly) a space nut. I grew up with my nose flat to the color plates of the Apollo missions in the encyclopedia. I built models, then went into 3D animation to animate the space I couldn't reach myself. I was ten when Columbia first flew, and now I finally know that we're going back to the Moon to *stay*. This isn't science fiction any more. This is now! Thank you. This is the part of America I've always been most proud of. I'll be interested to see how the SpaceX's Starship model is going to work and integrate with the Lunar Gateway, as the Gateway concept was to provide a staging point for use of a reusable lander/shuttle. It seems like the Starship model does away with the necessity for that. It's only my total amateur opinion, but it seems that it would be a mistake not to deploy the Gateway, as unless I'm mistaken, it could be positioned to more easily take advantage of Lagrange points for further exploration and perform a range of other valuable operations.

@odysseusrex5908 3 роки тому
There simply wasn't enough money to develop two landers. If Dynetics is smart though, they will keep working on ALPACA on their own dime, the way Sierra Nevada did on Dream Chaser. Eventually, a modified version of ALPACA could be used, not as a lander, but as a free flyer and rover on the surface. Imagine taking off and flying several hundred kilometers from the landing site, having the pressurized module roll off and spend some days exploring this place, then roll back on a fly back. Something like that, which ALPACA could easily be adapted to, would greatly expand our exploratory ability.

Well also, NASA has went with multiple companies before in previous contracts such as Boeing Starliner and SpaceX Crew Dragon. However, since Boeing Starliner hasn't even had a single successful launch, cost way more than competition, and been delayed years while SpaceX Crew Dragon is about to have it's third crewed launch, it's kinda obviously why NASA would be skeptical of choosing multiple companies. It's just an absurdly large amount of money for the same thing with more complexity having two companies offer two different systems.

If Dynetics were to keep working on ALPACA, it could easily be adapted into a surface exploration vehicle, capable of flying long distances away from the base camp, and using its pressurized module as a rover. NASA is going to need a rover before they are done, Dynetics should definitely try for that contract. The National Team lander, with its minimal reusability and very small payload capacity compared to Starship, would seem to have to meaningful role to play in future operations. I can't see NASA, or anybody else, paying for it. Of course, if Bezos wants to continue to spend his own money on it, I'm sure the other partners will be happy to take it from him.
